Some day I have to find that story again where Robert E. Howard (of Conan fame) literally did this to Lovecraft. I dunno how to find it, but here’s how I recall it going:

They were in a writer’s round table where each was supposed to add to a story. HPL started with some nonsense about how the PoV character turned into a horrible centipede alien and it was The Worst and it was just a bad, more racist version of Kafka’s Metamorphosis.

Then it’s Howard’s turn and he’s like, “and then I got over myself and was like wait fuck yeah I’m an alien centipede guy! I’m so much smarter and stronger than I was as a human! Holy shit! I’m gonna meet my centipede bros and get to know ‘em, and then we’re gonna take over the planet and it’s gonna ROCK.”

Iirc HPL rage quit, the other authors were like “why are you like this,” and Howard was super smug.

(now to be clear, Howard wrote some racist crap himself, but… /Gestures at HPL)
