2) Milagro inspiration

As part of a religious ritual or an act of devotion, milagros can be offered to a symbol of a saint as a reminder of a petitioner's particular need, or in gratitude for a prayer answered. They are used to assist in focusing attention towards a specific ailment, based on the type of charm used. Milagro symbolism is not universal; a milagro of a body part, such as a leg, might be used as part of a prayer or vow for the improvement of a leg; or it might refer to a concept such as travel. Similarly, a heart might represent ideas as diverse as a heart condition, a romance, or any number of other interpretations. Milagros are also carried for protection and good luck.

June 25 Bundle Dyeing

Instructor: Sarah Westrup

In this 6 hour workshop we will explore the magic of bundle dyeing on silk and cotton with organic materials. This process imprints beautiful color on cloth by using mordants salts, pressure, and steam while using very small amounts of water and dyestuff. Participants will learn the natural dye basics such as how to extract natural color, what are mordants and tannins, and how to use them to prep silk and cotton. We will experiment bundle dyeing with historical natural dyestuff such as cochineal, marigold, and logwood as well as experiment with kitchen dyes such as onion-skins and hibiscus flowers. Students will be given1/4 yard of silk, 1 silk scarf, and a cotton scarf to dye. We will also make samples prints on paper to add to your eco color library. All participants will leave with an instructional guide to take home.

Students will complete two silk scarves and leave with an instructional guide to take home.

November 21 Painting with Natural Dyes

In this class students will learn the magic of dyeing with the most celebrated insect and flower in Mexico called, cochineal and marigold. Historically, cochineal was used to achieve the most luscious of reds, pinks, and purples on cloth and marigolds were used to receive rich warm yellows. Both dyes have a high light fastness and can achieve an array of cool and warm tones. Participants will explore the process of preparing dried cochineal bugs and marigolds for dyeing and will learn how to create painted patterns on silk and cotton using thickened mordants.  Every one will leave with a collection of swatches and three 17”x17” handkerchiefs dyed and designed by the student artist themselves! This class is geared towards beginners who are looking to dive right into the world of natural dyes.

July 19 Natural Dyes: Kitchen Dyes

In the workshop participants will be introduced to the world of natural dyes while experimenting with accessible food items such as avocado pits, hibiscus flowers, and black beans to get a range of beautiful colors. Colors vary from pink, magenta, purple, and grey. All participants will learn the basics of natural dyes, how to extract color, what are mordants, and how to use them to prep silk for the dye bath. Studentswill explore tying and dyeing techniques on three raw silk handkerchiefs and will leave with a dye notebook and swatches to take home.

During this two-day workshop we will experiment dyeing with indigo, cochineal, and marigold to receive the full spectrum of natural color on cotton. All participants will learn the basics of natural dyes, how to extract color, what are mordants and tannins, and how to use them to prep cotton for the dye bath. Every one will leave with a collection of swatches and six 17”x17” handkerchiefs dyed and designed by the student artist themselves!

* Students are welcomed to bring any addition cotton cloth to dye. Please be prepared to bring all cotton cloth on day one of the workshop.  

DAY ONE: Organic Indigo BLUE + clay RESIST Date: Saturday, June 20 Time: 12pm-4pm Participants will learn how to make an organic indigo vat from scratch using indigo, iron, and lime. Titled the mineral vat, this indigo recipe produces beautiful blues exclusively on cotton fibers. All participants will explore tying and dyeing techniques as well as how to mix a clay resist paste that can be painted on fabric to prevent indigo dye from penetrating designed areas. Students will also learn how to tannin and mordant fibers so cloth will be ready to paint and dye for day two.  Materials include: (3) 17” x 17” cotton scarves

DAY TWO: Printing on Cotton Cochineal RED + Marigold YELLOW Date: Sunday, June 21 Time: 12pm-4pm Participants will explore the process of preparing dried cochineal bugs and marigold flowers for the dye bath to receive beautiful reds, pinks, purples, yellows, and greens on cotton. Students will learn how to create painted patterns on cotton using thickened mordants and observe the varied results between tannined and un-tannined cloth. Materials include: (3) 17” x 17” cotton scarves

Hydrogen Bond

For the Hydrogen Bond installation, I constructed an eight foot tall, twenty-four foot long screen which diagonally divided the gallery space at Reed College. The unlikely construction material — thread — is composed in a hexagonal web-like pattern with paper disks entangled in it, visually representing hydrogen bonds (one of the primary mechanisms by which papermaking fibers adhere to each other in the dry state) and metaphorically symbolizing the myriad connections in our lives.
