I am experimenting with botanical dyeing this weekend, for the first time (apart from a little bit of tea dying). These are my bundles before steaming, they are all woolen fabric mordanted with alum. I used rosemary, thyme, oregano (I have read that rosemary dyes well, no idea about thyme and oregano, but the supermarket only sold fresh rosemary bundled with thyme and oregano, so why not try them at that point right?), tea and saffron. Saffron is not something I would usually use for something like this, since it is very expensive, but our little box of saffron fell on a dirty floor, so the amount that fell out of the box was not suitable for food purposes anymore anyways, this way it at least gets used. And it started giving off a beautiful yellow as soon as it touched the wet fabric as you can see. Once they have steamed for about an hour, I will let the bundles rest overnight, and open them in the morning, I am incredibly curious about the results!
