Dr. Robert Spitzer, who was credited with removing homosexuality from the list of mental disorders, died on Friday at the age of 83.
Dr. Robert Spitzer, the psychiatrist who fought to remove homosexuality from the DSM, died last week of heart problems.
The psychiatrist worked on several editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (D.S.M.), meeting with experts in each diagnostic category to come up with definitions for each mental disorder.
Spitzer pushed to eliminate homosexuality, which was described as a “sociopathic personality disturbance”, in the D.S.M. in 1973. He met with gay activists and decided homosexuality did not classify as a disorder if gay people weren’t distressed by their sexuality.
In 2012, Spitzer gave a public apology for a 2001 study he conducted that stated gay people could be turned straight through reparative therapy if they wanted. According to the New York Times, the study did not test one particular therapy method, noting that half of the participants did not even see a therapist. The rest only engaged with pastoral counselors or did independent Bible study.
Rest peacefully and thank you for your important work, sir.
Sometimes you need to take a break from the troubles of the world and watch a 30 minute puppy massage.

A friendly reminder that whatever mental illness/trauma you are going through, remember to lean on those you trust. They’ll get you through.
You are not a burden. You are not too much to handle. You do not come with too much baggage. You are not only your 3AM mind, your pacing around your room, your doubt, your fears, or your mistakes.“
Emily Rella, “Learning to Accept Love for Yourself” (via twloha)
Nobody wants to do it - not real change, not soul change, not the painful molecular change required to truly become who you need to be. Nobody ever does real transformation for fun. Nobody ever does it on a dare. You do it only when your back is so far against the wall that you have no choice anymore.“
Elizabeth Gilbert (via twloha)
This made me do some gross sobbing.
