Hi, this may seem like an odd question but I'm doing some research on childhood magic and I've hit a wall. When we were children we were told if you blow a dandelion it Grant's a wish and other odd magic things. Would you happen to know any other childhood magic?
What a cool question! I used to do a whole bunch of “weird” things as a kid like always collecting rocks and crystals, pressing flowers and wanting to collect different plants, always talking to animals, stuff like that. Those weren’t really kids traditions though. One other thing I can think of is wishing on stars. Just wishing on things in general like, focusing on your intent and willing it into existence.
Something else though, and I wish I knew more about it, would be how holidays today have transformed from Pagan holidays and traditions. Like where did the tooth fairy come from?? I honestly don’t know haha. I mean, that’s why Halloween feels so magical to me maybe because of how Samhain used to be celebrated and even now some of those practices still linger. Maybe someone else on here (shoutout to my amazing followers!) could expand more on this, but that would be a really interesting thing to look into. 😊
Chanting “rain, rain go away,” lol, except as I got older I started to want the rain to stay so I changed the song/chant whatever it is to fit my desires, my sister would fight me on it cause she didn’t want the rain/didn’t like that I changed the song. That’s all I know!
I think I have a few for you. Mostly old superstitions, though.
I used to put out offerings to fae folk when I lost something like jewelry (which I lost unusually often). I think it was occasionally my mom's suggestion.
On St Patrick's day I used to build 'leprechaun traps' with some coins as bait. I thought if I could catch one I could make it lead me to it's pot of gold.
Four leafed clovers were good luck charms, and five leaf clovers were especially lucky; the more leaves, the luckier. When I plays outside I often looked for them. Finding a Ladybug was good luck too.
There's the rhyme 'find a penny, pick it up, and all day long you'll have good luck. Find a penny, leave it lay, you'll have bad luck the rest of the day.' But there's also the superstition that a tails-up penny was bad luck to pick up, so I used to flip them over to heads but leave them for someone else to find.
When I spilled salt I'd throw a pinch over my shoulder to prevent bad luck.
I also used to believe I had to run up the basement stairs or something would grab me. I'll add more if I think of them!

y’know…. conversations about world war ii would be a lot more bearable and constructive if white men found that period rightly horrific rather than pornographic
We glorify war because it’s the only time we’re allowed to release the beast and not go to jail for it.
You want to see who a man truly is, put him in a battle.
Man is never more himself, than when he has nothing to lose.
you’re not fucking odysseus, go to therapy
Like, high key I DO NOT CARE if you own a little fart of land and farm shit.
There’s better options in the long run like giving it back to natives but whatever idc
But the most APPALLING THING is to watch post after post CALLING IT homesteading. A word rooted in the existence of colonialism and genocide! Really!!!!
@tainbo
Oh shit, is it really?
Well, I guess it’s kinda obvious when you stop and think about it.
What should I call it instead? I’m into solarpunk, but the closest thing I can find to it in physical books are “homesteading” books. What should I call it instead? Is there a way I can gather old resources without supporting “homesteading?”
Like, you’re gonna find your info where you find it. Hey tough I would encourage you to engage with native agricultural practices, bc western ones are really bad for the land in the overall.
But tbh?
It’s farming. Y’all farming.
@tainbo
Lol Yeah, it is farming, isn’t it.
You actually answered the second thing I was going to ask: whether it was okay to use native agricultural practices as a white person. My follow up to that is this: How can I find those resources without poking my nose where I’m not supposed to?
Ngl, beats the hell out of me. I’d google it— I’m sure there’s plenty of resources. I am just a wee urban native.
English isn't my native language and I don't know too much about the history of the Americas, so I'm going to ask a question that's probably... stupid or something. How's the word "homesteading" rooted in the existence of colonialism etc? I apologize if this question is nonsensical.
Hope that clears this all up.
I'm really glad OP brought it up; I hadn't realized the connotations.
Most of the articles act like it was some beautiful American Dream shit and don't mention Native Americans at all. But I found a few and figured I'd share.
"And ironically, in the search for freedom, homesteaders – and speculators – encroached on Native American territory, frequently in aggressive and bloody fashion. Many settlers and speculators began to agitate for expansion of homesteading into land that had been assigned to Indians under the 1851 Indian Appropriations Act. The government responded by stripping Indians of the last semblance of sovereignty they had by abolishing the reservation system as well as their honoring of tribes as separate entities from the United States."

If your cat stares at the wall
Call their name. They always know what you’re saying, trust me.
If they do not respond (i.e look at you), check for a bug. Cats can speak to bugs. They’ll try to eat the bad ones.
If there is no bug, try and remember if your house has a Thing. The knowledge will be covered, it doesn’t want you to know. It’s in your mind if you look.
Do not pet the cat. They are trying to protect you. Let them do so.
The cat will keep you safe. They love you.
If the cat turns to look at you, and does not blink, the Thing has moved. Walk calmly out of the room. Leave the cat.
Remember #5. The Thing wants you to forget.
If this behavior continues for more than two hours, leave the house.
Burn it. Start upstairs, light a curtain near an outlet.
Your cat will be waiting by the door, as always. Take them with you.
Contact HGK477. They will know what to do. The Thing will know when they are coming and flee.
If HGK477 can’t find the Thing, that’s good. It won’t bother you again.
If your cat continues to stare, always seemingly at something right behind you, leave your hometown and never look back. Keep no ties with humans or Things. Just keep your cat.
HGK477 is not liable if the fire spreads. Cast wards for your neighbors’ protection and to make it appear to be an electrical fire.

Why light a curtain near an outlet?
Personally, this sounds too risky for me to try. I also live in an apartment building, so I'd be endangering other people, not just myself.
Unless you have reason to believe something Very Powerful is after you, I would use a different method. Burning you house down is a last-resort sort of thing. On the other hand, if you're summoning demons and such you may need to be prepared for a last resort.
I'll do some research and come back with some alternative suggestions.

Witchcraft has no guarantee to work. You can cast a spell with all of the ingredients, in perfect conditions, and the spell can still fail.
That doesn’t mean that you aren’t meant to be a witch, or that you aren’t powerful enough or good enough to do it or any less of a witch. It just happens. Failure is a part of nature, it’s a part of anything, including witchcraft. The only thing that can be done is to keep trying until you succeed.
I've always believed that witchcraft is exerting your influence on the future, and the world decides if it will bend for you.
Increasing your power, trying again, these things will make your desired outcome more likely. But I don't believe an individual can control the fabric of the universe. Some things aren't meant to be.
Sometimes you need to change your focus or move on.
some time ago i read good omens and thought “great book, but what if crowley were gay, a great writer, and somewhat sexually involved with aziraphale?” and, me being me, i wrote a poem on this concept entitled “What If An Angel And A Demon Fell In Love? Wouldn’t That Be Nifty?” and today it won me a hundred fucking dollars in a poetry contest. so take that neil gaiman
Oh lover, you’re a triumph, an undone calamity As flagrantly forbidden as the fruit up Eden’s tree I’m coiled like a caliphate; your hand crawls up my thigh The only of the seven sins you never can deny
You’ll never say you love me, though; you can’t admit you care You won’t admit you love me like the drowning love the air You claim that I am nothing but the pride before the fall And maybe I have fallen, but I love you, after all
For I’m a devil; I can raise, then raze, than radiate I am a devil; I bleed black as ichor soaked in hate I am a devil; I deal in the secret side of pain Renunciation of salvation, dreamers down the drain.
And you’re an angel; you protect and guard all wondrous things You are an angel; you can rest the wide world on your wings You are an angel; you give the ineffable a voice You’re absolutes and absolution; I’m the thrill of choice.
Oh, lover, you are swords and crowns, crucifictitious tears, You’re covenants and convents and ecclesiastic years, Evangelist, avenger, Jonah in the wailing wall Pour plagues into the populace and kill the first sons, all
You want to say you love me like all demons love despair I want to say I love you like all angels love their prayer Oh lover, I’ll prostrate myself and never cut my hair, Oh lover, I have loved you since before the stars were there
You are an angel; you can lead the righteous in attack I am a devil; I can lead the wretched fighting back, I live to love you; it cleaves like a comet ’cross my soul You incarnation of creation I cannot control Though I cannot he holy, when I’m with you, I am whole.
This is one of those works that leaves you with this feeling. There's a slight rush as the feeling takes over, then an ache inside the chest that I savor. Phenomenal.

pretty shitty how baseline human activities like singing, dancing and making art got turned into skills instead of being seen as behaviors
so now it’s like ‘the point of doing them is to get good at them’ and not ‘this is a thing humans do, the way birds sing and bees make hives’.
