Theoden Cambell has never had a normal life growing up. His father raised him outside of Aladonia. The man had left after his husband had passed, and the place had to many memories for him. And the man had made quite a bit of money working as a mercenary of sorts. However, he wished to have more time with Theoden. But with so many enemies, he knew he’d need to go some place safe and secure. And so he went back to Aladonia. He was offered a deal that he could come back if he let Theoden participate in the Dragon Rider selection ceremony. And his father decided to let him. After all, what was the chances that a dragon would pick him worthy?

It turned out to be a foolish thought. A egg that people had worried would never bond with someone found Theoden to be the perfect fit. Due to his fathr’s profession, Theoden was already a beast in combat. His father trained him on how to fight with weapons in case any of his enemies came after his son. Theoden had a pair of bladed fans that he could wield with deadly accuracy.

But now he was bonded, and it was time for official training when the egg hatched only a week ago. It was tough, there was no denying that. And the ceremonies were even tougher. But when his dragon hatched? Was totally worth it. Theoden cooed over it and was a total mama bear. If anyone said that his dragon, which was sickly when it hatched, looked weird or weak? He’d be more tha happy to kick their ass, regardless of how much trouble he got into. Throughout the five years though, Theoden got more and more eager.

Theoden eventually made it to the final ritual, and he was so estatic and happy. The boy and his dragon were prepared to prove that they were the best of the best. Bolin grew stronger and stronger, getting over his illness naturally after a few years. Bolin was ust as brash and bullheaded as Theoden, nothing like the wise creatures that others say theirs is. Bolin was practically an overgrown puppy.

With all the training, Theoden is ready to put his skills to the test. A master archer, amazing throwing knives, and his trust bladed fans? He had everything he needed for success.

Theoden let out a chuckle before humming. “You can just say that you want to see me in my new garment, you know.” Theoden teased with a wink before nodding his head. “But that sounds good to me. Although your dragon might want to keep an eye on Bolin. Bolin can be a pesky little brat sometimes.” Theoden said with a chuckle as he tilted his head to the side for more of those kisses to his neck. “And I’ll make sure to keep you in line.” Theoden purred.

Darreth listened to the other explain as he talked about what’s been going on with himself. He pulled out a chair from the table so Theoden could sit, then he sat close by him as he took a swig from his own wine. Dragon riders were known to age much more slowly than normal people due to their power and connection with their dragons. Darreth had known Theoden for a long while and it almost seemed like he hadn’t aged that much. Darreth could be seen in perhaps a mid twenties still, even though he was nearing his thirtieth nameday. But from the time he had known Theoden, he hadn’t shown any sign of aging. He could still pass for being sixteen or seventeen. Still beautiful, nonetheless. He was glad they found one another today. “You think you’re so much better than me, don’t you?” Darreth teased, “Just because you can mount a flying lizard and time passes through your body differently.” He reached for Theoden’s hand and held it, interlacing their fingers playfully. “By the way, I know you’re not fragile, darling. How many times have we done it, and I’m much larger than you are, and still you could go for an extra round?” He kissed the other’s hand like he did earlier and sat back, when asked about what was going on with him, the man sighed. “Well, I’ve gone from being a formidable, very well known knight to being the Hand of King Mathias. As my friend, you should know how well that’s going for me in my head.” Like Zakar, Theoden was one of the few who could read Dar without the man having to say much. “It’s not that it’s not a great honour…I just…why not my father? Who King Mathias is close to? Why not someone older with actual experience?” Darreth finished his wine and poured another. “And Zakar…well…I trust you won’t say anything, but he came to me after a small council meeting, and stated he’s in the talks of wedding Abril of House Canalo. Which means he’s definitely going to marry Abril of House Canalo.” He sighed again. “Just…so much in my life is changing right now, and sometimes I wonder if I’m able to keep up.”

Theoden let out a chuckle and shook his head. “Of course I don’t think I’m better than you, Dar,” Theoden said with a smile as a hand came up to softly caress his cheek. Before a cheeky grin took over his face. “I know I am.” Theoden said as he winked playfully at Darreth. “A bad ass flying lizard. I will not let you drag Bolin’s name through the mud.” Theoden said with a dramatic gasp, bringing a hand up to his face before chuckling. 

Theoden couldn’t help but to smile as the other kissed his hand, and a bashful look came onto his face when the other brought up how he could just about always go for another round. “Hey, not my fault that you can’t keep up.” Theoden teased playfully with a smile on his lips. Theoden rolled his neck to work out the kinks before taking another sip of wine.

“Why take the position?” Theoden asked the other man curiously. He supposed that wouldn’t be a good look to say no to a king, but if it made Theoden unhappy? He’d be more than willing to do that. Still...Hearing the other man’s words had Theoden reaching forward, teasingly slapping his cheek lightly. “Hey, thinking like that is going to do nothing for you. You’re a warrior. And a great one. All great warriors have to be adaptable to their situations, both on and off battlefields.” Theoden pointed out with a shrug of his shoulders. “You feel overwhelmed? I’m sure you did when you began getting the reputation you did. Everyone feels overwhelmed when beginning something new. Just train to get better and better, and soon you’ll be just successful here then you were as a knight.”

The Hand escorted Theoden back to the castle, back to his chambers where he sometimes retired to when he wasn’t needed. The servants were at the door and had prepared wine and charcuterie board for them to nibble on if they wished. They had tended to the room earlier too, and it looked very presentable. Not that Darreth ever left his chambers in a mess. He thanked the servants and they were on their way, he brought the other inside and closed the door to allow them privacy. “I think it’d be better should I pin you in different positions, there be a bed for comfort,” Darreth teased, as he took the other’s jacket and hung it on the rack, along with his cape and hat. The Hand then undid the buckle of his belt and sword, placing it to the side. “How’ve you been, Theo?” Darreth asked, going to the wine to pour them each a glass, “It’s been a while since we were last in contact. I really did miss you, you know…just because you’re a rider with a dragon, doesn’t mean you’re immune to harm.” He brought Theo’s chalice to him and clinked his own against it in a small toast. Although Darreth needn’t worry too much about his friend. Theoden was one of the finest warriors around, and he knew how to put men in their place when they judged the rider first on his choice of attire.

Theoden hummed and nodded his head. “Although I would steer them away from dragon riders if that’s what you want for them. Definitely going to get more than two battles in that profession.” Theoden said with a chuckle. Theoden’s grin widened as he snapped one of his fans open, the blades practically shining in the light. “Ah, with me? We would be destined to victory.” Many people called Theoden confident...Cocky even. But Theoden liked to think that he could back it up. As one of the fastest and flexibile dragon riders, both him and Bolin were capable fighters by themselves. When you have them together, fighting almost flawlessly with one another? They’re terrifyingly beautiful. 

Without his cloak, Theoden was left in nothing but the lace shirt, the skirt, and the piink pair of thigh high boots that he wore twenty-four seven. Theoden’s plush lips curled up at those teasing words, Theoden shaking his head. “I think you’ll find that I can handle myself on any surface I find myself pinned on, Sir Darreth. Remember, I’m not as fragile as I may seem.” Theoden reminded with a grin as he moved to take a seat. 

He graciously took the glass of wine. “I’ve fair well. Been practicing and playing with Bolin quite a bit. Want to make sure we’re on the peak of our game, you know?” Theoden asked with a chuckle. Theoden hummed before nodding his head. “That is true. Though my body is more durable than even yours, Dar,” Theoden reminded with a chuckle. “But I have been injured upon occasion.” Those were definitely not fun times for Theoden. “What about yourself?”

He would protect the family until he could no longer. It was easy for Theoden to catch up to the other, having always been one of the fastest ones. Because of you,” the larger man explained as he kept the other by his side, walking him down the dirt trail that exited out of the grounds. “They do hope they’ll be chosen to be blessed with dragon eggs. I wish it was that simple, but I allow them to dream. And if they couldn’t be riders of dragons, they can ride into battle on brave horses.” Because Darreth was the son of a former Child of Daganth, he often believed, in his childhood, that perhaps his mother would take him to the Magdani mountains to be tested to see if he himself could be a rider. But his mother never wanted to go back there. And the man learned to accept that fate and the Gods had other plans for him. “Would that be such a bad thing? Escorting you to my chambers where we can drink, catch up and…do other things?” the Hand asked, gently squeezing the other’s hand in his own. He wasn’t one to truly admit his feelings to most, unless it was people like Zakar, Dani or Theoden. It had been a long day and Darreth now just wanted to relax and enjoy a pleasant evening with with a good friend.

Supplies and animals being taken to their respective areas and handled with the appropriate amount of care. 

“Because...Of me?” Theoden asked, surprised and oddly touched. For a lot of his time in training, he was the outlier. The weird guy who prefered to wear the cute feminine clothes. So now to hear that people looked up to him? That wanted to be like him? It oddly touched the dragon rider’s heart in a way that he thought could never happen again. Theoden nodded his head and chuckled. “They could be strong warriors with or without being dragon rider. Sure, having a dragon is cooler. But that doesn’t mean they can’t whoop ass.” Theoden said with a chuckle. 

“Not at all. That sounds like quite the lovely idea to me anyways.” Theoden purred with a smile. Theoden smiled as he squeezed his friend’s hand back before shrugging his shoulders. “Just normally you’re to busy trying to pin me to the ground in multiple positions then to take me to your place.” Theoden said with a cheeky grin, knowing the other could take that either sexual or training. And honestly? Either way would be right.
