new unseen monkey bts pictures i accidentally stumbled upon while doing a bit of online digging and one in particular is killing me because how in the bloody hell did my first attempt at drawing bill back when the movie came out manage to mirror this so well

just gotta say i love your posting about the monkey its one of my fav horror movies from the past few years (but im definitely biased as both a twin & a horror comedy lover) and i love seeing you talk about it ^_^ its such a fun movie.. stylized editing is always something i love and the music of the movie also gives a really specific tone... Its so goodddddd

so sorry it took this long to respond but thank you so much!! the monkey… such an oddball movie in retrospect and i still love it. funny that you mention how good the score is, i have edo van breemen’s ost on vinyl (and little fun fact he also helped kane parsons score the backrooms movie!). i also have a little section of my denim jacket devoted to it

this film is rather special to me in part due to the fact that i was going through a very difficult time in my life when i first saw this movie and it did help alleviate my anxieties and the overall existentialist spiral i was going down. i find its approach to the sensitive albeit inevitable topic of death fascinating, while i found it outright entertaining on the first watch i kept thinking about the movie’s revelry in the absurdity of our flimsy mortality and went on to seek out oz perkins’ interviews and commentary before and after the film’s release and it opened up an entirely new perspective.

the director’s parents were anthony perkins and berry berenson, both of whom died under shocking and unexpected circumstances- his father of aids, having also hid his homosexual identity from his children, and his mother a passenger of one of the planes that crashed in 9/11. oz perkins saw this movie as an opportunity not only to reflect on his parents’ passings but also in general how death can be random, cruel, and sometimes downright silly. the monkey’s world is a heightened reality where a cursed toy monkey may or may not conduct the machinations of one’s demise but the outcome is still the same; deliberately ridiculous and impossible explosions of blood and viscera and killer wasps. lois shelburn puts it best: everyone dies and that’s life, but to hell with it, let’s go dancing. there is still value in finding joy within even the most morbid of circumstances. you really never know what’ll happen, so the least you can do is have some fun with it.

and the twins! influenced by perkin’s relationship with his own brother (who also performs as Zilgi and did the ost for longlegs!), specifically their differing ways of processing their mother’s death and the schism that formed between them as a result. hal and bill are deeply affected by lois’s death even in adulthood, hal scraping by as a member of society but pushing away loved ones and failing to connect with his estranged son while bill has been fully subsumed by paranoia, a social recluse trying to outrun the inevitable. bill is so interesting to me as a character unable to accept the reality of the world he lives in and fixated on the monkey as a means of controlling the uncontrollable. i think part of him doesn’t care if he himself lives or dies, he’s lashing out at the easiest target (his brother) to regain a semblance of control with little regard for the collateral damage he accumulates in the process. in a way it’s a cautionary tale of letting your worst fears and fantasies consume you. and also he’s melodramatic and funny as fuck and i could fix him (with a blow to the head with a hammer)

in short i don’t know man i just love this movie!! i’m glad people enjoy the stuff it’s inspired me to make! people can use art to help process severely difficult stages of their lives and this just happened to come along at the right time and remains a consistent comfort watch for me.
