From these images you can see the damage that has been done to the springs. These pictures are from various springs (White Springs, Chassahowitza Springs, Wakulla Springs, and Silver Glen Springs, respectively). Many springs have nearly dried up, while large amounts of algae are forming in them. The water is now becoming murky and cloudy, and the safety of the water is questionable.

Doing Your Part to Save the Springs

Hey everyone!

Here are some tips that you can use that will help with the preservation of Florida's springs:

Reduce the size of your lawn and choose grass varieties that require a minimal amount of fertilizers and watering.

Do not over-water your lawn. Use a rain gauge to determine when and if you need to water.

Every drop counts, so turn off the faucet! Don't let the water run while doing the dishes, brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing your face and hands.

Take shorter showers. You can save several gallons for every minute saved in the shower. Replace your showerhead with an ultra-low flow model. They're easy to install.

When visiting springs, dispose of your trash properly. Cans and bottles, cigarette butts, plastic bags and other trash harm water quality and wildlife and destroy the natural beauty of the springs.

Get involved in local planning and land use issues to protect sinkholes and other land in springsheds. Your voice counts!

Help teach others about groundwater issues and responsible landscaping. Volunteer and become an advocate for a spring.

Be a steward of Florida! Every little bit counts.

Florida's springs are deteriorating right before our eyes:

The water flow has slowed.

The water is being polluted by nitrates.

This pollution leads to the formation of toxic algae in the springs, putting human health at risk.

The fresh water from the springs is becoming more and more salty.

This is all negatively affecting Florida's water supply. Florida residents need to be informed! Help spread awareness!
