Just do a Swagbucks search for swag and youll see what I mean. (I apologize if you clicked on it already, its uninspired at best) This doesnt take away from Swagbucks though. We still pride ourselves on being the place to go for online rewards but it certainly got me thinking. What if Swagbucks as you know it didnt exist? What if a company still existed called Swagbucks but it had a little more to do with the name. Heres what I mean: Swagbucks: A taxidermist specializing in preparing, stuffing, and mounting the skins of male deer with surplus fabrics from the clothing manufacturers Obey and Supreme. See what I did there? Good, because thats what your Swaganigans challenge is for the week. Choose a retailer on Swagbucks Shop & Earn or MyGiftCardsPlus. Tell us what this company really does. Use both your humorous cleverness and intellectual horsepower as well as the example above as a template. Prizes Grand Prize gets 2500 SB. Second Place gets 1500 SB. Other runners up get 1000 SB. Now it’s time to hand things over to the esteemed Prof Jockey to round up last week’s origins. LAST WEEK’S WINNERS Last week we asked you for origins. Second Place Winner of 1500 SB Water softening systems Baptisms werent always just a dunk or sprinkle in the water. Officiants performing the rite used to catapult their congregant from a great height and distance. This, however, often resulted in death, which the officiant declared was the baptized congregant simply going to heaven sooner than expected. Being skeptical, in order to soften the blow from landing, other congregants would use large sticks and beat the water so that it would soften the blow. Such began the original water softening system. Now that we have chemical and electrical water softening systems, officiants can now conveniently drop their congregants into any container of softened water without fear. (wimmr, New York, NY) Grand Prize Winner of 2500 SB RIDGID S24 17-3/4 in. Bolt Cutter (Home Depot) and BEHR Premium Plus Depot) In the darkest of dark ages, there was once a king who was quite medieval in thought and deed and who was loathed by all who knew him. His only redeeming quality was his son, Prince Nelson, who was loved by all the kingdom. The king ruled with an iron fist and was always fashioning new torture devices for people and animals alike. He would first test small versions of his inventions on his guinea pigs but when he finished them all off, he moved on to birds. He would brag to his servants that, This is what it sounds like when doves cry. His favorite device by far was something that would cut through any part of the anatomy. When the king died on December 31, 1699, the prince rose to power and the people rejoiced. To forget the previous darkness and misery, and in a nod to the princes favorite color, this time came to be known as the Purple Reign. The castle was painted a purplish hue, provided by crushed blueberries, and the resulting almost amoeba-like pattern prompted a palace name change to Paisley Park. The people of the kingdom would forever remember the date of the kings death and in celebration would henceforth party like its 1699. (creeativeforce, Vienna, VA) Runners Up (1000 SB each) My wife and I were just arguing the other day about sheds. She would be too frightened to ever go in one, believing that it is where ax murderers and thieves hang out. Actually, shes not far from the truth. In 14th century France, homes were very small, typically 8 ft x 10 ft. Yet entire families would live in them, referring to their home as Chez d'(last name), meaning home of As French society became more upwardly mobile, the wealthiest members of the family moved up to larger homes, leaving the undesirables of the family (step-children, mothers-in-law, ax murderers) behind in the original home with the other tools. The larger houses became known as maison, and the smaller ones, eventually containing only tools, maintained the name Chez D, now known just as shed (BooBBear, Carmel, IN) Formula 409 128-fl oz All-Purpose Cleaner (Lowes) Formula 409, while commonly believed to be a thoroughly modern invention, owes its existence to ancient, stuck-on, Greece. Aphrodite, goddess of love, was worshipped throughout ancient Greece. Her priestesses were often sought out for their love potions, or aphrodisiacs, the most fabled of which was love potion number 9. Less well known was Formula 409. While not inspiring feelings of amorousness, Formula 409 was recognized throughout the ancient world as a powerful cleanser more powerful than Ajax! Cleanliness being next to godessness, it was felt such power could only be wielded by the high priestess and the secret recipe was handed down from successor to successor, even into modern times. (GlennJ, Arlington, TX) It is too bad that neither store sells barber poles because I have an alternative theory on their origins that will make you lose your hair and find a ship in your pants. But when I saw Ponte Vecchio Natural Iron Ceiling Fan, I was immediately reminded of another quirky micro-history that of the ceiling fan and the word fan itself. Mankind has long known about the power of wind to cool the skin on a hot day. And while handheld fans developed rather quickly, a means to create a steady breeze without using the effort of ones own arm was unheard off. The first ceiling fans were a luxury to be found only the houses of the upper class and royalty. They involved sporting 3-4 young children with large head-to-toe capes and tying them securely to iron rods attached to a round washer secured to a pole hanging from the ceiling. The pole was usually situated near walls allowing the boys to use their feet and push off of them to keep the fan in motion. When it got dark, the young boys were given torches to hold onto. This was problematic for two reasons. Firstly, If the boys moved fast enough they would often blow out the torches. The second problem involved safety. Many a boys foot was burned when the boy behind him got lazy and lowered his arm. The jolting pain often caused a sudden increase in the fans speed thus coining the term hot-footed. While the job sounds unpleasant, being a fan-boy was actually a coveted job. Especially when more and more theaters starting installing this new invention. Theater fan-boys not only got paid, but they got to watch their favorite actors, orators, composers , clowns, beheadings etc for free. Eventually, the colloquialism developed to just calling them fans. So every fan of something is really re-enacting a medieval air conditioning ritual. When Monsier Ponte Vecchio discovered a way to hang an additional boy from the middle of the fan, the practice of equiping each boy with a torch ended. Instead, the boy in the middle was equipped with multiple torches that he kept aflame while the other boys spun. This less exertive roll was usually held for a senior boy or boy privilege. Such boys were referred to as Fan Number One, which eventually just became Beach, CA) Honorable Mentions (10 SB each) The Band Saw actually originated as a medieval torture device, named so because each night, a new victim was selected as the guest lead singer for the local Screamo Band. They were slowly dismembered by the saw as musicians accompanied their screams of agony to the amusement of local peasants. Bonus trivia: the band’s name was DeWalt, which is where today’s popular power tool company got its name. (Kendrlynne, Tooele, UT) The Simpson aluminum power washer, invented in 500 B.C.. was made specially for the powerful European family, the Simpsons. The Simpsons, especially Homer, hated all the smelly, unbathed people who he lived near. So much in fact that he wished for a way to clean them all, even if it meant serious harm to them. Thus came the invention of the power washer, colored red to represent the injuries from the victims peeled up skin. The power washer however came on wheels, for easy transport to spread the cleanliness around even faster. Whether it was out of fear of being sprayed, or out of fear of severe injury, more people soon started bathing. We have Homer to thank for not only bringing bathing to be popularized, but for the invention of the power hose. (ras97 Kansas City, MO) The axe originated as the perfect way to get pesky game and fowl bone splinters out from between your teeth. The wooden handle was contoured for easy gripping and the beveled iron blade got right in between hard to reach teeth. Extra care had to be taken with use, otherwise you could end up with a splitting headache. Axe, the original toothpick. (Joslyn86, Seattle, WA) The Pleasant Hearth Fire Ring Originally came from the PEASANT Hearth Fire Ring. During the medieval Black Death, wealthy nobles had peasants cremated in the Peasant Hearth Fire Ring in an effort to keep the disease from spreading. Because that wasnt entertaining enough, they came up with a little rhyme to sing as they walked around the fire tossing in flowers, to make things morePLEASANT: Ring around the Rosy, Pocket full of poesy, Ashes Ashes, we all fall down. It didnt help that they also roasted marshmallows over the same flame. They all did fall down eventually. (tiffanyjean47, Barrington, NJ) Needle Nose Pliers The needle nose pliers has been around for a very long time, but became prominent for executors of torture during the medieval times. The needle nose pliers were the torturers favorite tool of choice, it was small, portable and easily concealable in a coat pocket. The victims that were brought into the chambers, were relieved when no torture bags or devices were seen. The victim would be relaxed when strapped to the gurney. (which only heightened the extreme sadistic measure of intense delight of the executor.)Cries of anguish would bellow out once the needle nose pliers were reveled from their secret hiding place. Delicately, the processor would pluck one hair at a time. One by one. over and over again relentlessly, starting at the feet and moving upward, (YES! There too!) until the pinnacle of the torture was reached the NOSE! When all the nose hairs were yanked out, the executioner would open the pliers, insert the nose tong as far as it would reach, one into each nostril and clamp down on the cartilage and with a fast twist SNAP! Instantly breaking the nose. Hence the name NEEDLE NOSE Pliers, was born. Moving forward today, the needle nose pliers is a common household tool that grips small objects and bend wires. No stigma left from days of old.. maybe. but be aware when someone suddenly reaches into their secret pocket.
