In memory of Diahann Carroll, who died yesterday at the age of 84, a costume sketch of Ms. Carroll as Clara in the 1959 film “Porgy and Bess” designed by Irene Sharaff. (This is a sketch we do not own. We had the pleasure of seeing and photographing an archieve of Sharaff designs while on a research visit to the V&A in London.)

On this day in 1963, the epic “Cleopatra” directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz was released! A costume sketch for Elizabeth Taylor in the title role, designed by the great Irene Sharaff. The film achieved notoriety during its production for its massive cost overruns and production troubles, which included changes in director and cast, a change of filming locale, sets that had to be constructed twice, lack of a firm shooting script, and personal scandal around co-stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. It was the most expensive film ever made up to that point and almost bankrupted 20th Century Fox.
