It was completely out of my hands, and besides – he did betray us, and I did want to see him locked up for it. We’re at war, Zuzu. Another powerful enemy like uncle is hardly what we need right now.”

She shrugs then, her stance in mirror to his. 

“I can see why it is you actually believe that I have so many allies though, if you think that that even had a remote chance of happening.” Azula is silent for a moment, gazing sidelong at her brother. “He deserves what he got.” 

“Shut up, Azula!”

His cheeks are warm, it doesn’t take long before he’s sweating. “How can you say that? How can you say that about our own family? He’s been mentoring me since my banishment, he’s just misguided after the war!” 

Thinking of Iroh as an enemy makes him nauseous, and he can’t figure out why. She’s right. He betrayed them, not the other way around. Still, it leaves his head spinning. 

Zuko’s body relaxes, his voice breaking, “He was just trying to do what he thought was right.”
