Steve’s face was blank as his brow knit and he lowered his hand, “What makes you think I haven’t seen all of those things?” He snapped, “Because I can assure you that I have. Maybe not in the way you think, but I have been to Hell and back, son.”
His face was unchanging during the young man’s story— He wasn’t quite certain why he was telling him all of it but accepted it quietly as he stood before him, back straight and face pointed ahead. “What’s your business here?” He asked abruptly, “Are you a refugee from your own universe then?”
So maybe it'd been his temper acting out. Blame the speedster in him for geting impatient that his father-- no, Steve-- doesn't already know these things since the man should know these things (only he shouldn't). Regardless of how he may differentiate Dad from Steve, when that voice hardens, his spine goes straight out of habit and the jittery tapping of his feet stops.
"Far from a refugee, sir," he says. "I lead the seventy fourth division in S.H.I.E.L.D. from the beginning of the Purge War until the Ceasefire of New Haven." The man turns into the soldier right in front of him and it's something that no longer intimidates him. It just makes him talk more and really James wishes he could stop but hey why stop now. "I was forced here because I.R.O.N. in all it's brilliance decided to mess around with some alien tech that popped up around mid-Purge. Frankly I'd rather be there with my family doing something useful with myself rather than running into the ghosts of my childhood before I was forced into a warzone at nineteen."

The last thing Tony needs is a drink. He’s been sober for just shy of two months and just the thought of a fifth of Jack is enough to have the shakes settling down into his hands.
But he’s a sucker for a mystery and he can’t shake the familiarity with this kid. Especially now that it was obvious the kid was meta, at least of some variety.
“Drinks are something I’m good at. I’ll meet you there, Jay.”
"You're bad with alcohol I know," he offers quickly with a grin because hell if he'd oversight on a detail like that. It'd left his fourteenth birthday a little bit more than interesting to say the least. Scuffing his converse against the ground with a low hum.
"It's just for shakes yknow," the 'kid' explains with a laugh. "Call me sentimental but that place has a lot of good memories." Of course he won't fill in the blanks of how Tony would whisk him away when Wally and Barry weren't around. They'd always go out for shakes, talk about things like how things worked, how they were built.
"Don't be late."
Steve arched a brow without saying much else— He figured the kid’s out right detest derived from some kind of multiverse endeavor. “Softer?” He asked as he extended his hand to the young man, “Not sure what you mean by that.”
"It means you haven't had to bring back your family from near death," comes the quick counter as if Steve is talking too slow, isn't keeping up enough. "Means you haven't had to watch your best friends gunned down, ripped apart, hunted, and treated as animals. So you'll have to excuse me sir if I don't take your hand."
See, people like him, people that have killed and ripped apart other people with nothing but their hands-- Well he's seen his father do worse and heal more with nothing but gauze and tenacity. Laughing slightly he shakes his head, "Sorry I've got you at the disadvantage here. So, yknow, if I seem upset it's because my partner was killed by the time I was out of college, survived ten years of mutant genocide, watched my aunt go crazy, nearly lost both my nephews, had to watch my other nephew go insane, and oh hey here's the kicker--"
A pleasant smile is given and he spreads his arms.
"You're my dad. Well see, a version of you is. We called him Director or General though. Captain was more Gibson's thing."

“I’m generally fairly arrogant about living. I tend to do it quite well.”
Tony’s trying to gauge that familiar face, but he doesn’t know who this kid is or why he’s getting thatlook.
“What’s your name, kid?”
A chuckle slips free and he shakes his head. Man, it was like a blast from the past minus a major blow out from his parents. Shoving his hands into the pockets of his hoodie there's a slight shrug given before he manages a smirk once more.
"That Mr.Stark will come for a price."
He makes it easy on the guy though and rubs a hand through his hair, pulling up his hoodie. Pulling out a pen he steps closer, takes the genius' hand and pulls the cap off with his teeth to write down an address at the man's palm. Capping the pen with movement that's too fast to be human he steps back with a grin.
"Just a drink. For now though, call me Jay."

“Good. Apparently not alive where you’re from.”
Tony’s watching with something like idle curiousity. He’s had his fair share of painful multiverse encounters without the other party having the slightest clue. And this feels like one of those moments. But for the first time, he’s on the other side of the equation.
“Alive. No arc. No Extremis. Beat the aliens in New York.” All of which were things he’d learned that deviated between various versions of himself.
Good. This wouldn't be painful at all he realizes with something of a quirking smirk. When Tony explains things, telling him how events have played out he gives something of a nod. Guess there was no 'Him' to really mess up the equation then.
"Right, you haven't really changed at all. Maybe a bit more arrogant but hey--" A shrug is given. "You're alive here and that's got to count for something."

“…you look familiar.”
That never seems to bode well.
"And you look surprisingly well."
So he may be more than a little less than bitter. Pietro told him stories growing up about the infamous Tony Stark. When you're a kid that grows up taught how to break a man in seventy different ways, how to defend yourself with your eyes closed, well you kind of learn to live a life that's kind of sheltered. Hilariously enough it'd been Tony Stark that helped him get on his feet.
First with a sketchpad on his eleventh birthday. Art Lessons at sixteen. Nano filamented body armor in the suit he wore to this day at twenty.
All he could give back was half a bottle of whiskey over the man's grave.
No, James is bitter because he can't believe it's fair that of all the people on this goddamn world it'd have to be Tony Stark, the one person who'd helped him through life, motivated him, hell, saved his life-- Well, it's a hard thing to swallow when he's very very much alive.
"So, uh, how're things?"

"Great. Another you."
Fingers run through auburn red hair and a rough breath slips free. It's hard enough seeing things that are so familiar and yet-- Wrong. It's even harder when it comes to Steve. Always has been, always will be. This time it's a rare kind of anger that swells to the surface.
"You look softer than the last one. Let me guess...they still call you Captain."

He's never really cared for the fireworks.
Nothing.
James thinks quick, moves quicker. Instinct is what guides him to eventually find the other man curled up in bed. His brows furrow in the slightest, soon his shoes are kicked off and he's crawling under the blankets to press close behind the feral without a single word. Pressing a soft kiss at the back of the sweat-damp neck, he keeps an arm curled around his partner, fingers fanned out to gently rub along his stomach.
"I wish I could tell you a story of something better...something more than the war," James whispers into Kiden's skin, nuzzling and pressing bare skin wherever he can. He knows scents are a thing that influences a feral and he tries to cover his partner in his scent to calm him down with slow gentle touches. "All I have are my memories of you before it happened."
