“I-“ His words started when she accused him of letting his mouth run lose to the king; however it was pointless. Pointless to bring up a quarrel with the crown princess. So instead, he closed his mouth and listened to what else Scarlett had to say. So this is what she wanted to talk about He sighed to himself. Perhaps he shouldn’t have taken her words so literally.

“… Forgive me, your highness.” Kyros paused and swallowed as he carefully chose his words. But what difference would that make? From all his previous interactions he had with Scarlett, even though it was practically none, his every word—no, existence was a hindrance and eyesore to her. One would have to be blind and oblivious to not notice it, especially since he had grown up with enemies around him… Which would explain his tendency towards violent behavior, even though at heart, he was kind. It was his only weapon to protect himself and people who he deemed important to him.

“I wanted to respect your wishes, however it appears that my actions have caused you trouble…forgive me for the rude behavior.” There was an uncomfortable silence, at least, it felt uncomfortable to him and it frustrated him. His knuckles turned white as he clenched his fist. It also took him every ounce of self-restraint to not lose his temper and lash out at her. He was lucky enough to have been spared by the king, lucky enough to obtain a high position, lucky enough to have a second chance at life, and this was just a trial. A challenge against his immature life before the royal family.

Scarlett was completely slack-jawed by the reply. How was she going to take the moral high ground like this? She could attempt to rile him up or insult him but... she couldn't shame herself like that.  Gritting her teeth, the princess nodded stiffly. "Very well. It will be pointless for you to avoid me as before." 

This was where she should apologize, ask for forgiveness and let bygones be bygones. But was she truly in the wrong? Scarlett didn't think so. She was trying to protect her family and her country from one horrible, wicked man. Her father may be so lenient and kind as to forgive and forget, but Scarlett will not. She is the future of this country, as her tutors have told her, time and again. She'll do what is right. So with the right words lodged somewhere in her throat, Scarlett offers the former gladiator an icy smile, "When you're finished playing hero, you'll be gone anyway."

Her sudden appearance made him nervous. He would have moved out of her sight to respect her wishes, but he still had his dignity for being Captain of the royal guard. He had considered keeping his head down while talking to Scarlett, or even looking past her, but it would be rude of him to avoid looking at the crown princess… not to mention that the soldiers gawked at the sight before them. Her nonchalant reply took him off guard. What would bring her here? Surely not practice, the crown princess never took much interest in the training ever since I became capta-

“I would like a word.”

Her words disrupted his train of thought. A….word??? Kyros noticed that the men, though turned around, heard her words clearly. His skin felt prickly from anxiety. Just why was he behaving as if he were afraid of her? True, he wished to respect all members of the royal family, but it was only with Scarlett that he felt at ease, not only that but also to somehow prove to her that his loyalty lies with the king. He let a subconscious sigh of relief when he heard that she wished to discuss, whatever it was, in private. Surely, it would not be something pleasant to say in front of an… audience.

“Of course, your highness”

But she was already heading towards the garden before he could finish speaking. He pursed his lips slightly and turned back around to his men. “Second in Command, Rickey! Lead the rest of the training until I return.” He ordered the tallest of the men before hurrying after the crown princess. 

The princess moves quickly, he thought to himself. Even though he was a few moments behind, he could see the last of her skirt disappear behind the archway of the garden. Not wanting to accidentally anger the princess anymore than he might have already, Kyros picked up the pace and arrived shortly after. He stood by the entrance, leaving a sizable distance between the two of them, as well as respecting her space. All he could do now was to wait for what new words she had to say to him.

Once they were safely hidden from curious eyes, Scarlett whirled around to face the Captain. While the hem of her skirts had not escaped the trek completely unsullied, the man looked irritatingly pristine. Normally, Scarlett would pout about it or make a comment but not now - especially not with him.

There was a respectable distance between the two of them still and Scarlett was grateful for it. Not only was he unnerving as it is, she didn't know if her words would incite him enough to finally show his true facade. 

It worried her. This man was a violent gladiator. It was known throughout Dressrosa that gladiators (even former ones) never lost their bloodlust and often craved the rush of adrenalin only a good fight could bring. They were disgusting. She wouldn't put it past him to strike her. Though a part of her relished in the eventual ousting and harsh punishment of this criminal. It will hurt, she knows. Whatever pains he'll inflict on her, it will hurt. But she's convinced it will be worth it. Once he's gone from her world and back where he belonged, she can finally relax. 

"You've told my father," Scarlett intoned, brusquely getting to the topic at hand. She levelled him a stern glare - but did he even feel anything? Who knows... "Or he's noticed your ineptitude. Either way, he's upset with me." The princess paused here, clasping her hands in front of her full skirts and watched him expectantly. 

Just what would he say to her now?

Ever since his promotion, he had felt uneasy, often plagued with a tinge of guilt. Scarlett’s condition did not seem all too difficult at first— that is, before Kyros realized that being captain meant that he would constantly be present in the palace. 

He took the Crown Princess’ words to heart since the last time they had met. Stay out of my sight. Her voice echoed in his head. One day, when he was conversing with King Riku about the troop’s training, he heard the king call out to his eldest daughter. The moment he heard the name, Kyros slinked off into the shadows without the King realizing. Obviously, after such a display of behavior, the King questioned him and Kyros could only answer.

He couldn’t tell what the King was thinking from his expression. It was calm and the king simply dismissed him. Kyros didn’t give much thought about it after the incident passed, and the king did not question him anymore.

They couldn’t train the day before due to sudden downpour. He grumbled as the ground was not in its best condition for training. The men stopped their training and stared at him. Kryos gave a stern look to them but realized that they were not looking at him, rather, at the person beside him. And from the corner of his eyes, he saw who she was. 

His eyes widened and he could hear the blood pump through his heart. “Y-your highness,” His words stumbled out of his mouth as he took a step back to bow. “I- we were not expecting you!”

He is very... tall, the thought ran through her mind as Kyros righted himself from a customary bow. 

After seeing hide nor hair of him for so long, she'd almost forgotten just how imposing this man was. Any words of remonstration she could have struck him with died quickly in her throat. Perhaps, that was a good thing. Her unexpected presence in the field had garnered a fair amount of attention, if the curious gazes were any indication. 

"Y-Your Highness, I-we were not expecting you!"

"Ah, yes." She glanced briefly at the men watching the two of them. Hmm, she hadn't expected an audience for the awkward spectacle that would be her half-hearted and very insincere apology. She was a princess. Not some freak show. As if sensing her displeasure, they all looked away to stare off in any direction but at them. But they were all listening, of that she was sure. She'd long since mastered that move. "I would like a word." 

There was an awkward pause and Scarlett added, "In private."

Already, her mind was racing to find a place they could talk. But there were none. Having spent her entire life in the palace, she had discovered a great number of hiding places and unseen corners - none of which she cared to share with this man. Instead, she nodded in the direction of the nearby gardens. The gardeners shouldn't be about so soon and the greenery would provide some semblance of privacy. "The gardens will do." 

To spare herself the indignity of having to take his arm, she collected her skirts in hand once more and set off without him. He wouldn't dare snub her, now could he?

It was awful. Awful and not completely unexpected. Her father, despite his lenient treatment of certain individuals, was an observant man. He was also quick to act once he got a handle of the situation. She should have known Kyros would have let it slip that she'd lashed out at him. The man obviously wasn't above running to her father instead of facing her like a true man. Just thinking of him irked her. 

The conversation she'd just had with her father had been a terse one. Apparently, Kyros had taken to literally diving into the shadows when she walked past. Scarlett hadn't noticed but that did explain why she hadn't seen him once despite the palace requiring his constant attendance. Scarlett had never disappointed her father so greatly in life than now. The look of exasperation and disappointment on her father's face had cut her deeply and to hear him lecture her about proper behaviour and - 

She'd never been so ashamed of herself or more angry with Kyros. So when she left her father with the instructions to apologize to the captain, Scarlett intended on doing more than that. 

The princess found him by the training fields after asking one of her father's retainers. With his back towards her as he oversaw the men's training, she had no possible way to flag him over. It was either she went to him or wait for another time and risk the chance of her father finding out she'd avoided Kyros. 

She'd disappointed her father enough as it is. 

It was going to be a tricky distance to cross, Scarlett determined as she eyed the expanse of damp fields between her and the captain. After last night's brief downpour the fields have yet to dry completely even under the midday sun. Grasping her red skirts in one hand, Scarlett carried on gamely. "Captain Kyros." She called him, once she was by his side. She had waited for him to notice her but he was too enthused with shouting orders and leading the training. 

She wondered how he'll react to her presence now when she'd ordered him to stay away.

Kyros is sobbing and so am I.  Riku’s such a great king.  Kyros is hard on himself to an extreme.  9 whole years in the colosseum because he knows if he steps out that people will only see him as a monster.  But he’s human. He’s more human than a lot of people.  I think that Riku entered the colosseum as a test to Kyros.  This whole scene was just so moving.
