#FileMaker friends: Alan Stirling + Peter in front of the Troi Booth by Peter B. Via Flickr: Troi booth, Exhibitors Showcase, #FileMaker Developer Conference 2018, Gaylord Texan Resort, Grapevine (Dallas), Texas

Working the booth at FileMaker DevCon
At each FileMaker DevCon there is a product showcase with lots of vendors showing off their latest products. Troi Automatisering has been showing their plug-ins for over 18 years now, the first DevCon we showed plug-ins was in Monterey. Over the years we have seen a few new vendors, but in general it is a very steady group. Which I think says something about the stable environment of the FileMaker community. Some of them have become quite familiar faces.
Below you’ll find a few photo’s of this year showcase in Las Vegas, to give you an impression of what the three day’s of the showcase was like.
15 years of Excelisys
Excelisys celebrated 15 years in business this year. Below you see them at their booth, with the great Christo, who’s leading the pack on the right.
Then to the Troi trio: Tim, Peter and Diana were the booth-babes this year. Tim has grown quite a lot since he went to his first DevCon in 1999 in San Diego, where he had to hide beneath the booth, as children were not allowed.

FileMaker DevCon 2016 Las Vegas
It’s been more than a month now that Troi Automatisering attended the annual FileMaker Developer Conference 2016 in Las Vegas. It was great seeing lots of old friends. And I’m amazed by how quick it all went.
Below is a small recap of the first few days, with some of the photo’s I took.
Day 0: the day before DevCon
On Sunday we went to the registration. People got their badges and a rucksack. And they could add their n-th year tags to their badges:
On Sunday I also made a group photo of all the speakers of this years DevCon:
This is quite a FileMaker brain pool!
Day 1: Monday
On Monday the DevCon really got started, we setup our booth first:
Luckily all our bags had arrived (unlike other years) so the booth was ready quickly. We also had a nice flyer printed, to handout to customers.
(Download our DevCon flyer PDF here)
Then it was time for the Keynote presentation, where Andy LeCates, Rick Kalman and Anand Vaghela (amongst others) gave an inspiring talk about the current state (which is great!) and the future of FileMaker (which we can’t discuss). Here Andy hands over the show to Rick:
The Product Showcase
At the showcase, which ran for 3 days, we met with lots of people, old customers and newbies, who we showed our range of Troi plug-ins.
To make it more visual we had a display using our Troi Serial Plug-in and FileMaker Pro 15, which hooked to an Arduino mini-computer (via USB port). It showed the current temperature at the venue, and tracked the data in FileMaker. Below you see the electronics:
It was a great success, lots of visitors tried to manipulate the temperature to a dry heat:
More to come
That’s it for now. We will cover the rest of the conference with extra photo’s in a future post.

Our Troi sign is standing out there and is the first in the row. #FileMakerDevCon is almost starting!
Troi Dialog Plug-in 6.5 for FileMaker Pro 15
Today we released a new version of Troi Dialog Plug-in, our plug-in for showing dynamic dialogs in #FileMaker Pro. This version is FileMaker 15 compatibile and was tested with Windows 10 and OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). In this version we also fixed several bugs, rewrote and modernized the code in several places and made further improvements. You can download a fully functional demo here: http://www.troi.com/software/dialogplugin.html
FileMaker Pro 15 is here.
The first official day with the final version of #FileMaker Pro 15. I have a smile on my face.

German Devcon "FM Konferenz 2015" starts in Hamburg
With about 200 people the german developer conference is being held from 8 October until 10 Oktober.
Troi is proud sponsor of the conference. We also prepared a leaflet with our plug-ins in German: You can the see the PDF of it here:

Receive data from an external device in FileMaker Pro
With Troi Serial Plug-in you can receive data sent from an external device with a serial (RS232) interface in FileMaker Pro. You can have the plug-in start a script upon receiving in order to process the received data in your database.
Receiving the data
Assume you have an external serial device connected to a (virtual) serial port on your computer. You can use a serial-USB adapter to connect to a USB port on your computer, which will then act as a virtual serial port.
To receive data from this device, first open the (virtual) serial port on your computer using the Serial_Open function. Add this script step to a ScriptMaker script:
Set Variable[ $ErrorCode; Serial_Open( “-Unused”; “COM1”; ) ]
This will open the COM1 port.
Add this step to the script to start receiving data sent to the COM1 port using the Serial_Receive function:
Set Variable[ $Result, Serial_Receive( “-Unused” ; “COM1”) ]
Troi Serial Plug-in buffers the incoming data. With every call to Serial_Receive all data from the buffer is retrieved. This might not be all data coming in. You might need to wait and append new data coming in at a later time.
