Initial Conclusion:

Mental instability is a major problem in today’s society. More and more people are being diagnosed as having anxiety, bipolar disorder, and depression. These symptoms, if not diagnosed and treated, can lead to the deadly consequences that we’ve seen. The government must see this issue and give aid to schools and health organizations to profile people and get them the therapy they need whether its medication or having meetings with a psychiatrist. Harris and Klebold could have had treatment for their mental instabilities from bullying and 12 more people would be alive. Adam Lanza and Seung-Hui Cho could have had medication and treatment for their disabilities and 59 lives would have been saved. The excuse to a lack of funds is not a valid reason anymore for any treatment, and no more children should have to die before someone sees the connection is established. A simple diagnoses and treatment plan is all that is needed to prevent school shootings.

1) While reading Grizz Writes I especially found the extensive amount of information helpful regarding plagiarism (pg. 9-10). Most students who are not trying to plagiarize, but also don’t actively look against it so may accidentally not give credit and it could be considered plagiarism. I also found it helpful in the plagiarism chapter how it said to paraphrase research like you are explaining it to a friend (pg. 10). This helped me because it helped me understand how to word my research better and how to understand it further.

2) I found it helpful when Dr. B explained the components of a scholarly source. Before this class, I always thought all sources were the same and didn’t realize there was a difference between scholarly and non scholarly. As for my paper personally, I found it helpful when with my topic of ‘school shootings’ Dr. B suggested I make it more detailed and have a smaller, more focused topic so it didn’t look like just another college paper on school shootings. This helped tremendously as it was easier for me to find information and say exactly what I wanted to voice in my paper.

3) Before I was introduced to the Oakland Library OneSearch method, I had no means of finding scholarly sources. I have always been very confused when it came to the concept of databases and finding scholarly articles so my old method was to just search in Google and if the link ended in an ‘.edu’ or ‘.gov’ I knew the source was reliable. Now, with the OneSearch, I find it a lot easier to locate articles that I can use relative to my topics. If I were to show someone step by step how to search in a database, I would first suggest the Kresge OneSearch and tell them to use specific keywords when searching a topic. I would also tell them to use the check boxes on the left side of the screen to further narrow the search and find the book or article they needed.

Cho spoke very little to his parents and avoided eye contact. Although his parents urged him to open up, he isolated himself from his family, which generated a high 564 J. S. Hong et al. level of family stress. The lack of a parent-child relationship was attributed to the fact that both of Cho’s parents worked long and extended hours at their dry cleaning business. Such situations can create child-rearing difficulties and decrease parent-child interactions. Both Cho and his sister reportedly felt isolated due to lack of interaction with their parents (Virginia Tech Review Panel, 2007)."

This is an image of Seung Hui Cho. He is the shooter in the Virginia Tech Massacre which killed about 20 people. Looking at this picture he looks like a regular student, which shows that it could be anyone who commits a school shooting.

1) In the reading “About Rhetoric”, I learned the meaning of the term ‘rhetoric’ in this writing sense. It makes sense the way it is used in politics that the politicians are trying to persuade people to vote for them. I can also see it in a ‘rhetorical question’ since those questions are used to help us understand. We, as writers, are using rhetoric to try to persuade and explain our topics to our audience using our opinions and facts. Another interesting fact I found was that there is more than just the rhetoric to persuade, but you must use the context as well. The immediate subjects that are similar to your topic must be included to show contrast and add more depth to your writing. The last point I found intriguing was explaining how logos, pathos, and ethos are all important in a paper. I feel as though the ethos is the most important aspect of these three characteristics of your paper. Without the audiences trust in your facts and sources, it does not matter how many statistics and compassion you have for it because your audience will not take you seriously.

2) Template: I am studying the Virginia Tech, Sandyhook, and Columbine school shootings because I want to find out why they happen and how to prevent future attacks in order to help my reader understand the pressing issue that is a school shooting.

1) A source becomes reliable depending where it originated. It has to be considered scholarly and found in a place that can be traced back to the full text, for example: certified scholarly articles, published books, and formal recorded interviews.

2) The primary consideration when using people is recording all of your data and making sure they are a reliable source in the field that you are interviewing them in. The surveys also have to have credibility in them and the people you are surveying must have knowledge in the subject in order to answer the survey correctly and honestly.

3) Every time you take any piece of information from a source, write down the quote and cite the source. This will keep you organized with your quotes and sources and put you at less of a risk for plagiarism or accidentally citing wrong.

4) Personally, if I am taking notes from a book, I hand write the quotes I feel like I would need and write the page number they came from and all the information to cite the book at the end of the notes. However, if I am using an internet source, I will copy the quotes into a word document and write which paragraph and line they came from within the article or piece of digital writing and copy the URL to ba able to find that exact website if I need more information.

5) “On April 16, 2007, a school shooting tragedy befell the Virginia Tech campus, leaving 33 people, including the gunman, dead and countless others seriously injured. The lone gunman was identified as Seung-Hui Cho, 23, a senior at Virginia Tech.”

This quote is an important statistic about the Virginia Tech Massacre. This is one of the 3 main shootings I am focusing on in my paper, the others being the Newtown shooting and Columbine High School.

When first hearing the word ‘problem’ I think of the word: solution. I go through life with a yin and yang mindset that everything has an opposite that completes them and every problem has a solution. It is not a matter of giving up it is stretching your mind to different possibilities to come to a solution.

I feel like my project is both a question and a problem. I am asking the ‘why?’ to school shootings but in asking why I am also trying to use the answer to prevent further shootings.

1.) When I think of ‘research’ the first thing that comes to mind is ‘time consuming’. In order to get the right information from credible sources, you must research for a substantial period of time. Researching involves digging up lost information from different areas and putting them together to fulfill a specific need you have created.

2.) I have researched when my friends and I are bored and need to find somewhere to hang out. We go on our phones and search “closest ice cream shops to Wyandotte” if it is the summer season, or “closest movie theater to Oakland University” if it is too cold to be outside. I never realized that it was a form of research, but since we are comparing which prices are the best and which theatre is closest and the movies it offers, we are researching the best deal to take.

3.) Research by Google’s definition is as such: the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.

4.) Writing things down is the only way I remember details and definitions of topics. In class I am a constant note taker and must constantly be writing or I do not remember what is required for an assignment. I choose to write things up because it helps my memory. My memory is terrible, especially short term, so if I have to give a definition of something right after it is given to me I must write it down as repetition. Writing is the best way that I learn.

5.) It may be considered ‘joining a conversation’ when you research because you are not the first person to be interested in that topic, so you are joining in the interest of people who think like you. I am sure I am not the first person to ask ‘why’ when it comes to school shootings and there are more than likely quite a few theories as to why they happen, some credible and some not. The point of research is finding which theories are credible and having sources for them and which ones have no bearing.

6.) In my research I hope to relate with the type of writer that “Finds a Solution to an Important Practical Problem”. I want to find a solution to a phenomena that happens in our society that should never occur; the ending of lives, and in this case, children’s lives. There should have been a solution to this problem in society long before 20 first graders had to be sacrificed.

7.) I feel like my readers would be in the category of “help me solve my practical problem”. The people who would find my paper on the internet or in a journal would most likely be researching how to solve the same problem. They would either be looking up information on school shootings or ways to prevent them, both instances that would be included in my paper.

This quote shows the importance of preventing school shootings, since it went as high as the President of the United States personally stating that it shouldn’t happen again.
