It wouldn’t be his job to do so, that’s his first concern. There’s something within Thomas that really despises the idea of stepping onto anyone’s toes: not out of magnanimity, but out of a wish to be left alone and not involved in things he knows are too big for him. He’s no leader, he’s a carer. He’s a second, or even better, a third. Someone to be given direct responsibilities, medical responsibilities, and nothing beyond that. So pair that up with his standing before an actual leader - an understanding one, at that - and he feels more discomfort than can be seen on his features.
