Where Wind Never Rests (1) - Madeira 2026
This gorgeous spot lies on the way to Ponta de São Lourenço, a long, narrow peninsula stretching out to the far eastern tip of Madeira Island. It’s a place known for its dramatic volcanic cliffs, striking orange rock formations, and endless views over the Atlantic Ocean.
The landscape here feels almost otherworldly. Dry, rugged, and windswept, the area is protected as a partial natural reserve to preserve its rare plants and seabirds. With the ocean on both sides, the wind never really stops, shaping the landscape little by little.
These massive, colorful cliffs were formed millions of years ago. Layers of different volcanic materials stack together like a giant natural cake, and in some places you can even spot vertical basalt dikes cutting through the rock. Coastal erosion is constantly at work: wind strips away loose material, rain seeps into cracks and sharpens the ridges, and powerful Atlantic waves crash into the base, carving out caves over time.
Eventually, all these cliffs will collapse into the sea, leaving behind only sea stacks - the stubborn remains of basalt that resist erosion far longer than anything else here.
As breathtaking as this place is, photographing it comes with challenges. The relentless wind and sea spray make it far from camera friendly. I struggled quite a bit, and many of my shots ended up out of focus. Long story short, I don’t feel like my photos truly do justice to this magnificent landscape.
If you ever find yourself in Madeira, though, this is absolutely a place you should have on your must see list.
