“Yeah exactly. Kind of like an exploration night of sorts.” Sophia had lived in New Orleans her whole life but still hadn’t explored the entirety of the city. “I was thinking we’d start with the French Quarter and see what trouble we could get into.”
“If you want trouble, the French Quarter is definitely the place to go.” Scott said with a nod. He remember all too well what trouble he got himself into in the French Quarter on his birthday one year.
Beers. Alexander expected the alcohol and time helped in the conversation. And also with the heat he liked the plan, maybe he needed to relax, drink beers and forget the face. He knew he needed to have friends. “Journalist.” He knew some people could feel intimidated with the editor name, and also he was not working or trying to impress. “Tulane University should have a team right?” He expected thing hadn’t changed so much.
Scott enjoyed his alcohol. For that brief moment of having a drink he was able to forget about his past. “A journalist? You work for the paper or something?” He asked before taking another swig. Scott then nodded in agreement regarding the football team. “They do, but I’m an LSU boy myself.”
“I uh, well she er-,” Wren said trying to collect her words and completely failing. Scott was distracting in the physical sense, and Wren was having a tough time controlling herself. “Well I mean, it’s pretty lucky that she get’s to cuddle you…I-I mean you just look like a great dog owner. I bed she’s spoiled with pets,” Wren said trying the best to recover her response. You can’t just admit someone looks like a good cuddler Wren, she thought to herself biting down on her lip. Wren quickly change the subject. “So, do I get to know these places, or are they a secret?”
Scott raised an eyebrow as he waited for an answer from Wren. When the blonde spoke, a charming grin appeared. “You’re right about that. She does get a lot of attention.” He admitted while running his fingers through his hair then cupping the back of his neck. It was a nervous habit he developed as a child. Although, Scott portrayed someone who didn’t care about a lot, deep down he did. He still got that warm, fuzzy feeling when talking to a beautiful girl. Now, the subject disappeared and Scott nodded in agreement. “I can let you in on a few of my hiding spots.”
Would be harder than he believed. Alexander could see the man in front of him was short of words. He was the opposite but was a matter of job, or curiosity. Still, he wouldn’t give up, not so fast. “Work. I’ve been offered a good job and I believe a change isn’t bad. Until the moment New Orleans proved to be interesting.” The people was interesting. “Do you like go to see them?”
The waitress came by with the second round of drinks and Scott immediately reached for his. “What kind of work do you do?” He asked before taking his first swig. He tried to be good at small talk, but it was difficult for him. He was never fully comfortable with people unless he really knew them. Scott shook his head while removing the bottle from his lip. “I do, but it’s hard finding time to go watch a game.”
“That makes two of us.” She stated as she drove. It had been awhile since she had been home, and everything had changed since the last time they spoke. But she was back now, and hopefully that was worth something. “Well if I told you, then I would have to kill you.” She teased, jokingly. Glancing over at him for a moment before looking at the road in front of them.
Scott kept his gaze out the window as Victoria spoke. It was nice having his friend back in town after so many years. A quick chuckle escaped his lips as he shrugged his shoulders. “Keep your mouth shut then.”
“Me too honestly. I haven’t seen you in so long I was starting to seriously consider injuring my car just so I could take it to the shop or something.” Frankie laughed to make it clear she was joking, although she might not have been now that she gave it a second moment’s thought. Ever since she had returned to town after four years of college and a year’s worth of traveling, she really hadn’t been up to as much as she would have liked to. This was a nice break from her new job of waitressing. “Okay, so I haven’t actually decided where we’re going now. I was just gonna wing it. What do you feel like though? Drinking or not-drinking? Exploring or just staying in one place? New place, old place?”
“You were that desperate to see me huh?” Scott responded in a joking tone with a playful smile. It was nice to see Frankie again. Their time apart from each other had been way too long so he was overjoyed to be out of the house and with a friend. “Today can be a go with the flow sort of day?” Scott suggested with a shrug of his shoulders.
“I couldn’t agree more, but I can’t tell you because it’s a surprise,” she responded. Annabelle was going to take him to the beach so that the two could relax in the sun for a couple days before work would consumer her life once again. “I mean if you’re going to keep asking, I’m going to put a blindfold on you.”
Scott let out a loud groan before hitting his head against the head rest. “You know that I hate surprises though.” He mumbled under his breath as he kept his eyes on Annabelle. “Fine, my mouth is closed.”
Wren’s eyes lit up at the mention of getting outdoors, she had the same idea, but didn’t really know of any places around town to go other than by the water which was almost always crowded with people biking or couples watching the sunset. “Yeah! I’d love that! Got any ideas?” she said excitedly, before turning to another important piece of their conversation, his dog. Leaning over the table Wren squinted in to Scott’s phone screen a big smile erupting on her face. “Oh my goodness-she’s so wrinkly and adorable. What a lucky girl,” Wren said with a smirk towards Scott. “I’m glad you enjoy em’, everyone in New Orleans has to try one of these puppies if they really wanna call themselves a native.”
Upon seeing the way her face lightened up at his words made his smile widened. It was hard for him not to stare at Wren, especially with the way her eyes sparkled. “I’ve got a few.” He said, the wide smile staying plastered over on his face. He soon slipped his phone back into his pocket. “What makes her lucky?” Scott asked curiously before leaning forward with his arms against the table. “I can officially call myself a native now, thanks to you.”
“Yeah? Well good because so am I.” Sophia had never been the type to be by herself all the time but with how busy she had been lately it’d been impossible for her take a breather. But finally things were starting to slow down and she was able to do something fun. “I’m not sure yet. I was thinking we’d drive for a little and see where we end up. I suck at planning.” She laughed.
Scott smiled at Sophia before nodding in agreement. “Go with the flow sort of night?” He said while glancing back at the window. It was nice getting out of the house for one night, especially with Sophia.
Days at the shop could be boring so most of Béla’s co-workers often relied on him to lighten up their day. Usually, his jokes or tricks ended with a fit of laughter and then everyone went on with their day. Today was different. Looking around he could see his colleagues staring at him in astonishment over how stupidly he seemed to break the body part. “Hell if I know,” the boy began, stumbling to a chair near him. “It isn’t that bad, is it?”
Usually, Béla was the work clown, but it seemed as if today he took his fun a little to far. Scott shuffled towards his coworker to check out his injury. “How’s this?” He asked as he pressed down on his broken toe, knowing it would put him in a lot of pain.
“In between working and well, working the answer is no. If I’m being honest this is my first real day off in weeks,” she said sheepishly, taking another bite of her beignet. She didn’t want to seem like she had been guilt-ed in to spending her day off with Scott, she was actually really enjoying herself, so she quickly tried to change the subject back on to something else. “You have a dog? My apartment complex doesn’t allow them, nor does my work schedule, or I’d have one in a heartbeat. What kind it is?” she asked before realizing Scott had just tasted his first beignet. “So-what do you think of it hmm?”
Scott quickly finished off the first beignet before his eyes widened at her statement. “Why don’t we go do something outside after this?” He suggested while reaching for another. He was enjoying himself here, but he would be happy anywhere as long as he was with Wren. Regarding his dog, Scott nodded and reached for his phone to show her a picture. “This is Grace, my English bulldog.” He explained while eating his second dessert. “It’s pretty damn good.” He said with a warm grin.
“Thank you,” he sang as Scott excited the room. Quickly, Flynn started jamming his clothes and other ‘things’ into three separate suitcases, and one duffle bag. He still had his apartment in Los Angeles, but there was no guarantee of his return. So, he had let his friend rent the place, taking all of his things with him— just in case. After ten or so minutes, Flynn had finished packing, the room still an apparent mess with its empty bottles and unmade bed. By the hall laid the rest of his belongings to be taken down. Hands on hips, he heaved a sigh. “Alright…. so… I’m not about making more than one trip so… someone’s gonna have to carry three things,” he points out, looking at a single box left, with the three suitcases and duffle bag.
When Scott returned he saw Flynn looking at the rest of his belongings. He wasn’t sure if he would be able to carry much more. His shoulder was already irritating him, but he wasn’t going to let the pain show. “I can do it.” He said before grabbing the box and laying two suitcases on top. Without saying another word Scott made his way back to the car.
Firm shake, nothing he wouldn’t expect it. Still, the name told nothing to Alexander. He hated how time erased his memory, but he knew was the product to try to forget all what meant New Orleans in that time for him. Now he needed to remember because in his profession was useful know everybody and now stories. The question made him return to the table. “Jets. I lived in New York big part of my life. Even I tried to go to MetLife Stadium when I could. You?”
Scott had always been very observant, it was part of his introverted nature. He preferred listening than talking and from their short conversation Scott could tell that Alex’s mind was wandering. He was curious as to what it was, but decided not to ask. When New York was brought up he let out a scoff. “What are you doing down here then?” He asked before adding, “Saints.”
Wren could sense Scott was a little uncomfortable as he looked out the window towards the bustling city. She noted to take him somewhere more serene for their next stop. Reaching her hand on to the plate to grab a beignet Wren brushed Scott’s hand. She blushed and quickly recoiled as she grabbed on to one of them, immediately taking a large bite. Manners Wren, she repeated in her head. “Man-I miss camping,” Wren said somewhat dreamily, “My family used to go all the time when I was a kid. I love getting outdoors. Like you said, it’s relaxing.” She sighed, “I miss the fireflies. Ever get any of those near you?”
For a single moment, his hand froze when he felt the warmth of her skin brush against his. He kept his gaze on Wren to see what her reaction would be and what he received was a blush and a large bite. A charming smile instantly appeared over his lips as he grabbed a beignet and leaned back in his seat. “Do you get outdoors a lot anymore?” He asked before taking a large bite himself. He then nodded in agreement, chewed, swallowed, and then answered, “I see a few every now and then. My dog tries to eat them sometimes.” Scott expressed with a quiet laugh.
“Thank you,” he answers dramatically, giving a bow. He goes on, packing up his clothing as quickly as possible, thankful that he didn’t carry much. “Doesn’t matter,” he says without looking. “I’m just gonna pack all this crap then follow you down. They shouldn’t be that heavy, all my DJ stuff is at the Heat— probably shoes… records, whatever.”
Scott scanned the boxes and mentally created a plan on which ones he would carry first. When Flynn said they weren’t heavy he decided to go two at a time, it’ll make their time here go faster. “You got it.” He stated before picking up two boxes and carrying them down.
Alexander analyzed his actions, as he was used to do with everybody, it was an habit to try to understand people, useful for interviews. He noticed the man in front of him was not made for talks, but sport thing was a clever move. He asked other beers and prepared his answers. “Football, as everybody I believe.” He can’t consider himself as a fan, but he only tried to be informed. “Alexander.” He said extending his hand.
Scott kept his eyes on the TV screen as he waited for an answer. The answer given to him definitely wasn’t a bad one, especially since football was his favorite sport. He glanced at the extended hand before giving it a firm shake. “Scott.” He mumbled before once again looking at the TV. “Who’s your team?” He asked curiously. Scott was the kind who could talk about sports for hours and hours.
