he spots her almost as soon as she walks through the door, seeming to capture her attention entirely despite her short stature. “ did it hurt when you fell from heaven? ‘cause, man, your face is fucked up. ”
a heavy sigh escapes her lips as she glances up at him, eyebrows furrowing as she takes a long swig from the drink in her hand. “dude, fuck off. quite frankly, i’m not in the mood.”
for some reason, jack finds himself wondering what she thinks of him, the misplaced feeling of uncertainty followed quickly by a flash of anger. that she would make him doubt himself, that he would care about her opinion despite it being completely and utterly inconsequential. and so, frustrated by her invisible effect on him, he simply stares at her for a moment before turning and walking in the direction driver’s side door. “get in the car. everyone.”
scour finds herself stopping for a moment, eyebrows furrowing as a heavy sigh escapes her lips. she’s stuck thinking for a moment. was she actually attracted to this boy? not a chance. maybe a bit sexually, sure, but never real attraction. she’d have sex with him, nothing more. she’d never let herself do anything more. “where are we going, exactly?” she questioned, raising an eyebrow before she was making her way into the passengers side of the car.
he watches her with what most would call a blank expression - but the slight twitch of his lips and furrow of his brows indicate the workings of his mind. he watches the way she reacts to the attention, coming up with psychological analysis to explain her behaviour and dismissing them just as quickly. the sound of his name brings him back to the present, gaze still fixed on her as she turns to him and meets his eyes. he takes his time replying, giving a small shrug and looking around casually before gracing her with a wink and a sly smile. “it definitely can’t hurt to have you around. at the very least you’re nicer to look at than these buffoons.”
she’s studying him now, curious to see his exact reaction to the group’s new member. he’s blank, emotionless. her? she’s curious. wondering what the hell the boy has stirring up in that pretty little head of his. but, she puts her straight face back on, her lips pursing as she meets his eyes, looking directly into his. she was a bit intimidated by him at the beginning, sure. but now? she wasn’t. not a bit. “if i have to admit, you’re not too bad to look at either. don’t get used to compliments though, dipshit.” she muttered the end, not wanting to come off as too soft.
he allows a moment of silence after she finishes, expression indecipherable as he lets out a low whistle. his friends all share a similar stunned look, eyes flickering between scout and jack as if wondering how to process this new information. finally beck breaks the silence, face breaking out into a huge grin as he slings an arm around the shoulders of the small girl, pulling her in with a laugh. “welcome to the family, shortstack, i think i might just like you better than jack, here.” his declaration breaks the ice, the rest of the gang coming forward to welcome her with varying levels of enthusiasm, her success proof enough that she was one of them. once the commotion has died down, jack gifts her with a begrudging smile, an insight into how pleased he actually his with her work. his minds already working, ideas incorporating her skills and plans in which she was essential. “not too shabby. i guess you can stick around.”
she’s raising an eyebrow, knowing damn well that she’s impressed everyone. even if nobody would admit it, she knew. especially Jack. she could just tell by the expression that came across his face that she had impressed him. a grin forms on her own lips with beck wraps an arm around her, welcoming her. soon enough she’s wrapping an arm around him as well, shrugging. “eh, i don’t think being more likable than jack is a hard task to beat.” she tells, gladly taking all the attention for a few moments before she’s meeting jack’s eyes, staring up at him. “c’mon, you know you’re damn glad to have me here.”
he can’t hide the amusement he takes from her success, the hint of a smile turning up the corners of his mouth and glinting in his eyes as he tilts his head to one side. “not bad, shortstack, not bad.” he snatches the watch from her dainty fingers amongst snickers at her newly appointed nickname, swiftly pocketing it to be dealt with later. “how’d you do it? you’ve gotta’ spill the details or we won’t know if you’re telling the truth about stealing it or not. you could’ve just borrowed daddy’s money and bought it.” this earns him a few more chuckles, which he accepts graciously, chin jutting out as challenging her to some invisible struggle for power.
her eyes roll upon hearing her new nickname, but she decides to argue it later. for now, all she wants is the attention. the attention that in less than twenty-four hours, she had actually stolen a watch. “oh, how i wish daddy had enough money to buy a cool little watch. if he did, though, it’d be all his. not gonna waste his money on this shit. but, if he did have the money,” she started, looking jack directly in the eyes, “it would of saved me from having to fake buying a watch. would of saved the guy behind the counter from pulling some out for me to look at. then, me distracting him long enough to slip one in my purse. then i shrugged and moved away to look around at other watched, and he simply put the others away. then i was lucky enough to distract the security guard so i could delete the video. had to suck his dick for him to be distracted long enough, but it worked. if you need those details, he had me stay in his office for a few minutes so he could go around and check to make sure no one would come in, and it was just long enough for me to delete the video.”
jack has spent the past twenty-four hours brainstorming, trying to imagine how scout was planning on completing the task. if he’d been curious before he was going crazy now, surprised by how readily she’d accepted the challenge, as if she robbed high-end stores all the time. like it was no big deal. and, despite how frustrating he found her, he couldn’t stop thinking about her, no matter how hard he tried to distract himself. so he finds himself lounging in almost exactly the same spot as the previous day, imperceptibly anxious for her to arrive with the item and prove herself. because now he wanted to get to know her, to learn more about her, about what was beneath the surface of her innocent face. he chats casually with his friends, about the news, about the future, about the past, about nothing at all, but his mind isn’t truly focused on the conversation, not as intensely as it usually is. he’s scanning the horizon every so often, waiting for her slim figure to appear, hoping it’ll appear and she didn’t decide to disappear. when he finally does see her, he steps forward slightly, a pleased smirk on his face and hands stuck in his pockets as he watches her. “well?”
scout would admit, the past twenty four hours were a goddamn thrill for her. a refreshing one, a sensation she’d never experienced before. she spent half the time organizing and planning, perfecting the art down to the very last thing needed. it took a while, and she went through what seemed to be fifty methods, but she finally got one without a flaw. and it worked. it worked goddamned well. she was quick and swift, snatching the watch quickly before she was slipping away. now, here she was. the watch hidden in the sleeve of her oversized sweatshirt, and she was now approaching the male once again, surprised that he was actually there. she kept her face straight for a few moments before she was pulling out the watch, dangling it before his eyes with a giant, shit eating grin on her face. “completely new. straight out of the store. i hope this suffices.” she spoke, unable to hold back her grin.
she irritates him in the best way possible, getting under his skin and yet at the same time fascinating him. it’s like he’s never met anyone like her before, has never been faced with someone so small yet so undeniably persistent. it’s only been a matter of minutes but he finds himself insanely curious, a look of intense concentration passing over his features as he studies her. he has a habit of spacing out, of getting caught in his own thoughts and withdrawing from world around him. and so it was that he almost missed her inquiry, his own curiosity mirrored in her intrusive questions. his muted expression awakens again, a cruel smirk taking over his face as he plucks his lighter back from her fingers. he gestures for one of his friends to come close, muttering something unintelligible into his ear, and earns an equally malicious smirk from the boy before he nods and steps back. he sniffs once, thoughtfully, before crossing his arms and resuming his position against the hood of his car. “you want to know what goes on around here, what really goes on?” he gestures to the group gathered around, taking in the collection of expressions portrayed on his friends’ faces and reveling in the mix of fear and confusion he notes. “well, first you have to prove yourself, sweetheart, you’ve gotta prove we can trust you.” his feet shift slightly against the pavement, and he meets her eyes for a moment before looking further into the distance, where the parking lot rejoined civilization and gave host to a multitude of stores. “say, caleb, you ever seen one of them rolex watches? nice shit, eh? ‘s a quality watch, that is.” his friend agrees, still clearly confused about jack’s train of thought. “whadda ya’ think boys? you like rolexes?” his question’s met with general chatter, ‘what the fucks’ and ‘bros’ mixed in with the agreements. he meets her eyes dead on, practically shrugging his shoulders as he challenges her. “you have twenty-four hours to steal us a rolex watch. you can choose the style. and if you do then maybe we’ll tell you what’s up.”
this is all a mystery, and scout fucking loves it. whenever scout is approached to something she doesn’t know, she will soon enough. she gets under anything and everything, tearing off layer by layer, piece and piece until she finds out what’s under everything. it’s her thing. everyone knew it, and if someone wasn’t aware, they were goddamned sure to figure it out. the female nodded after being questioned, an eyebrow raising. “no shit i wanna know. because i know goddamn well it’s not just smoking. y’know, if you’re going to lie about it, i would suggest becoming a better liar. just a tip.” she shrugs, a smirk plastered on her lips. she shifts her weight onto one leg and listens, her eyebrows soon raising in curiosity. now he has her attention. she can almost guess what’s going on here, but she’s not going to jump to conclusions. for once, she’s actually going to do what he says without questions. she’ll save the questions for tomorrow, and she won’t shut up after that. “alright. you have yourself a deal. i’ll see you in twenty-four hours, yeah?”
it isn’t the first time an outsider has been brought along. girls and guys alike make their appearances, one after the other, each troubled in their own way and each looking for some way to escape. and there had been a time that the group had accepted new members, when, after a certain trial period, the true nature of their meetings was revealed and the newbie was brought along on a small practice run. once upon a time, but not anymore, not after mistakes had been made and consequences faced. and jack was determined to keep it that way. it was far too risky to expand their pack, not only for them but for whomever they chose to include, and yet this girl, whoever she was, didn’t seem prepared to back down. he eyes her for a moment, a spark of curiosity lighting in his eyes as he examines the firm set of her lips and the stubborn raise of her eyebrow, finally letting a rough chuckle fill the air as he fishes out his lighter from his back pocket and tosses it to her. “alright, sweetheart, we’ll do it your way. for now.” the plans could wait until another day, technically; it wasn’t as if they were seriously pressed for time or desperate for money. and although her small victory stung his ego slightly it was one he was willing to concede if it meant convincing her they were just a regular group of guys.
she doesn’t have a single clue what this is all about. whatever it is, she isn’t buying that is isn’t more than what they’re letting off. it could be dangerous, whatever they were doing, but did she care? not a chance. the thing with scout was, she was curious. and she was stubborn. those two things never mixed too well. she knew that she would let her curiosity get the best of her, and she wouldn’t step down until she found out the truth. and she would know when that was, too. scout was pretty good at detecting what was true and what wasn’t. “for now, huh?” she questioned, pulling out her own pack of cigarettes from her back pocket and taking one out, using his lighter to light it up. “what about later? ‘cause i don’t plan on leaving you guys alone anytime soon.” she informs him, heaving exhaling. “so you might as well get whatever you have to do over with. better sooner than later, huh?” she asks, her smirk turning into a grin.

they play a dangerous game, often skirting disaster with the stints they pull, and jack orchestrates it all, the responsibility falls on his shoulders; the well-being of this scraggly crew of misfits whom he just might call family. and they know the rules: no outsiders. it’s too dangerous, not knowing who can be trusted. one false move could bring them to their knees and put an end to their fun. he regards her coolly for a moment, arms moving to cross his chest as he raises an eyebrow with a hint of amusement at her audacity. he shakes his head slightly, a rough chuckle passing through his chapped lips as he allows her comment to fade into silence, engulfed by the scuff of toes against pavement and cars in the distance. “we don’t do much here. ‘cept ponder the mundanity of human existence and smoke cigarettes.” his words are hard, eyes sharp as they meet riley’s and hold his gaze for an extra moment. a warning. a reminder of the golden rule. “go home, kid.”
she’s already been warned, told that she wasn’t supposed to even be there in the first place. how she made it there was beyond her, but she wasn’t arguing with it. all she knows is that she’s there now, and she’s too goddamned stubborn to be leaving any time soon. now that she’s been brought in, there’s no way he can get her out. no matter what the male says. an eyebrow is raised, head tilted slightly to the side as her hues stare up at him, unmoving. “fine.” she shrugs, her posture loosening. “if that’s all that this is, then give me a lighter and we’re all set to go. but, if you want me to leave, you’re going to have to make me. ‘cause i don’t plan to anytime soon.”

he clenches the cigarette firmly between his lips, smoke wafting from the red tip and billowing from his mouth with each exhale. the midday heat is evidenced by the shimmering waves hovering above the pavement and the beads of sweat dotting his hairline, only serving to increase his already blistering sense of irritation. with one hand he picks the blackness from under the nails of the other, occasionally pausing to remove the cigarette from his mouth and twiddle it beneath his fingers. the motion is as comforting in its familiar nature as it is absent-minded, deep thoughts evidenced by the fixation of his eyes upon the ground before him. the sound of footsteps fails to draw him from his reverie, though the shout of greeting which follows earns the raise of his head. he simply watches as the group approaches, leaning casually against the dented hood of his car and finishing off the last of his cigarette with a deep inhale and a twist of his foot upon the embers. to a stranger his look is unwelcoming - brow furrowed and mouth set in a thin line of disapproval - but, really, he’s simply observing, taking in the minute details often overlooked by everyone else. when the group comes close enough for him to be heard, he finally speaks, calling out the presence of the stranger amongst them in place of a greeting. “what the fuck is she doing here?” his voice is quiet, calm, but there’s a tone of authority to it, an underlying current of power buoyed by the group surrounding him.
she’s new to all of this, whatever this may be. she wasn’t given much information at first. all she knew is that she was in for a hell of a ride, and she was almost sure that she didn’t even know the half of what was going to be thrown at her. she’d figure it out soon enough, whether ir be the easy way or the hard way. her feet are padding against the concrete as she’s following a few males, her lips pursed tightly as she does so. just stay quiet for a while, she reminded herself. that was how this shit usually worked. it wouldn’t matter, anyway, she was never the type to let her true colors show until she was comfortable with someone. that, usually, didn’t take too long. as she’s approaching the other male, cigarette dangling from her lips, curiosity sparks up in her, and she finds her brows furrowing together, and her head tilting to the side at the slightest. her eyes scan over his figure, studying it for a a moment. an eyebrow raise at his comment, and there’s a bit of rage bubbling up in her, and she can’t find herself holding back. “i’m here for the same reason as you, bud.”
