THIS IS A LONG POST LONG ASS POST because i've had 4 cocktails & i'm collecting all of the tags on this:
#350$ is about 330€ which is just a bit under my monthly rent#if i didn't have to worry about rent every month#it would change my life so much already#having 300something euros more would be incredible already lol#yes i know how sad that sounds
That's not sad!! Not having to worry about rent WOULD be life changing! Research shows this! The largest benefit of most UBI pilot programs is an increased sensed of security and better mental health w/ payments as low as 250-350$/mo.
#350 would handle a solid chunk of my utilities#or cover some repairwork that needs to happen#or cover my insurance costs and then some#or pay off one of my credit cards in a year (if that was the only thing it applied to)#/obviously/ more would make things easier#and get us away from paycheck to paycheck#and since there's two of us in the house#that would nearly cover some of Kallen's expenses#heck that'd cover groceries for the month#I think I'll be amazed if I ever see UBI in the US in my lifetime though
Repairs! almost 40% of Americans couldn't cover a 400$ emergency expense. And if more would make things easier, ASK FOR MORE. Right now the biggest problem that UBI as a policy faces is lack of widespread grassroots demand! We gotta fuckin demand it!
#honestly an extra 350 a month would be nice#probably Could be life changing. that’s like. grocery money that i wouldn’t have to worry about#500 would be even better#tumblr polls
Not having to worry about eating is the whole fuckin point hell yeah. Say 500$ and get the organic brand why the fuck not
#probably in the 600-800 zone#I mean any amount helps but less than that is only going to add up to a housing/job level change over a long period of time#with no other emergencies#800 is starting to get into like “okay yeah this might add up pretty fast”#2-3000 is what it would take to solve it instantly
I'm talking what fixes your life INSTANTLY yall. I should've added a "more" option.
#about 1000 should do it#i could leave NH and go to a safer state
Having the financial ability to hit da bricks would be game changing for so many people.
"Nearly six in 10 young adults live within 10 miles of where they grew up, and eight in 10 live within 100 miles" How much of that is wanting to stay near family & how much of that is the inability to tank the financial hit of moving? Even with the "promise" of better wages? How is our status quo any different than serfdom at this point? oh MAN, freedom to relocate gets me HEATED.
#350 american dollars amounts to literally more than what i get every month lol
I'm fuckin incandescent with rage about the moral failing of poverty level benefits lol
#500 could get me a bigger apartment#or let me build savings#probably I’d do the latter#at least until I wasn’t so one misfortune ruins your life
One misfortune should never ruin anyone's life.
#god do i know universal income#about 800 would change my life i want for little and could rent something then
#$350 per month#i know a lot about ubi#including that the experiment in manitoba was *not* 'no strings attached'#and the people running the program sent the rcmp out to talk to households they thought were not spending the money responsibly
Was it Mincome? Incredible branding, trash methodology.
#i voted $800 because that's about how much I'd need if I wasn't with Community Services#but an extra $300 with Community Services would be life changing
It's important to note that the widely accepted best practice for implementing UBI is that it should not replace other social benefits and services! This is why Andrew Yang's proposal was a fucking joke btw.
#I'm not even going to hit $5000 in total income this year#if I had $5000 a month I'd actually be able to afford to live on my own
I was in that same boat for almost 10 years of my life thanks to wildly untreated mental illness. It's fucking dehumanizing. I'm so sorry. You deserve UBI, you're worth it.
#2k#id quit my job or move to part time immediately
YEAH THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOUT!! QUIT YOUR JOB MONEY!
#honestly $350 would probably allow me to afford a mortgage
#even just a little bit#350 would help me pay my bills#500 would help me pay for school#1000 would help me move out of my parents house#for 2000 i could take a leave of absence from my job#and go to school full time to finish my degree#for 5000 i could do all that and afford to have a baby
Fucking Vince McMahon Reactions dot jpg that's what i'm fucking talking about. Financial freedom is reproductive freedom! How many people would have a kid if child care wasn't approaching almost 20% of the median family income PER KID???
#i want UBI so bad i don't think it's going to ever happen but :(#i think the idea of it saving money by removing all the expensive upkeep of processing for welfare programs#and replacing with a lump sum#is just crazy enough to work#but that's my american attitude i actually have no idea
It can happen, I promise. & The thing is, you're right. Means testing is an abject failure, It costs MORE to "target" benefits vs just giving people cash.
Not to get all pepe silva about it but this is intentional! The fewer people who are able to qualify for and access social services, the less political pressure there is to continue funding them! How you get UBI is paying EVERYONE or NOBODY gets it!!
#we make plenty to live on#in fact my husband makes more than enough for us to live on#my income is like#useful so we can save up for a car or something but not necessary#so a few hundred a month while nice would not change our life substantially#it would have to be at least as much as I make I think#which is not a ton#but right now I feel like if I quit teaching I would feel guilty that we no longer have that extra to save for big things#so I put the amount that would make up for what I make so I could quit teaching and focus on writing
Your LIFESTYLE doesn't need to change for your LIFE to change substantially! Would you be more fulfilled if you could focus on writing full time? Would your life be better? We deserve more than just survival, our total production as a species is past that.
#$350 a month are you kidding?? i'm fighting for my fucking life just to find a job that pays that much more than what i make now#that would be awesome
I understand what it's like to be fighting just to be alive & I don't want to diminish that struggle when I ask: What would you be fighting for if you weren't fighting just to live? Who would you be fighting against? Think about who has a vested interest in keeping you focused on survival & nothing else. Eat them.
#I'd be able to get a way better climate control system
This has already started to become a necessity to live in a lot of places.
#to CHANGE my life? 5k#but being disabled and thriving is uhhh expensive#2k would improve my life but wouldn't do much to actually fundamentally change it
#i make a good amount of money already#even an extra $5k a month wouldn't be hugely life changing#i'd just end up saving it#but at least the way I would propose UBI to work if i got that I'd also have to pay taxes on it#and that's how it should be#lower incomes should be untaxed#with progressive brackets starting ABOVE where UBI would end#so in some ways I'd still not pay taxes on it#but it would push the rest of my income up and I'd pay taxes on THAT#and a much higher rate too
No! No taxes! UBI isn't extra income! the income from your job is! What's the point of the goverment going "Here's this money, but oops, we only meant to give you 80% of it, actually." None! Nothing! It's already fucking ridiculous that unemployment and social security are taxed!
