i genuinely think what is so compelling about taylor’s music is her ability to write this sentence or phrase that seems so simple on the surface but if you start thinking too hard about it you unlock new emotions

like there’s something that she’s done forever where she presents a strikingly simple phrase in relation to a specific feeling or situation and it stands out so that it becomes the defining lyric for the song

“please don’t be in love with someone else please don’t have somebody waiting on you” captures the feeling you have when you just meet someone and hardly know anything about them but suddenly you see an entire future play out

“now you mail back my things and i walk home alone” is it possible to hear this and not feel just overwhelming solitude idk. every time she performs this live and takes that huge pause after this line i lose it. there’s such an emptiness that follows it, and then jumps right back into it with “but you keep my old scarf” with just as much passion as before it is unreal

“please don’t ever become a stranger whose laugh i could recognize anywhere” god…. laughter is such a happy thing but hearing someone’s laugh that you loved who’s no longer in your life anymore….. realizing you don’t truly know them anymore… this lyric is devastating….

“what am i supposed to do if there’s no you?” i literally have nothing else to say about this one except i cannot even think about it without crying

“something gave you the nerve to touch my hand” this whole song is simple little lyrics that manage to send me into an emotional spiral that only taylor swift could create. the yearning, the tenderness, the anxiety…  you don’t want to ruin something that’s so delicate but you just have to…..

Thinking of the promt "Build", this lyric by @taylorswift was the first thing that came to my mind. I think it's a really motivating line of her song "new romantics" and I generally love her use of metaphors (and basically everything else about her songwriting :D).
