Reflecting on 199 Scribbles
I wanted to share some reflections and ridiculously, this took me weeks to write (I’m a really slow writer and there was so much to reflect on) so please take a moment to read. This is dedicated to all Scribblers, Supporters and future Scribblers and Supporters:
When you’re focused on the next step and haven’t taken a moment to look back, you don’t realise how far you’ve travelled. That’s how I feel about the landmark 200th ScribbleAKL coming up which has been 5 years and 199 events in the making!
So, I took a moment to look back and thought I’d share with you reflections on the themes that stand out most – people and community.
This community continues because awesome people like yourself at one or many stages in the past have shown your support for ScribbleAKL. Your support – whether it’s been a lot or a (big) little has all contributed towards the collective energy that keeps this unique community going.
Towards our 100th event I shared the following sentiment in a message with the Scribblers at the time and I want to share it again because of how well it captures my feelings on the people in this community:
It really is a privilege to know and be amongst such talented, caring, interesting, diverse, creative and knowledgeable people on a weekly basis. I see individuals with amazing potential, change-makers, visionaries, future leaders and generally awesome people that do great things. It’s inspiring.
When people like that come together and we’re able to share our knowledge or ideas, help each other or collaborate – it’s really something special (also sometimes a challenge to keep things on topic) and makes ScribbleAKL what it is.
It’s been a journey filled with discovery, mayhem, laughter and growth. From creating handmade flyers, Rube Goldberg Machines and interactive installations to behind the scenes chaos during mini golf making. There’s been activities that get everyone confused to ones that get everyone in their creative spirit and interpretive dancing and more. So, so much has happened.
Reflecting on all these experiences has led me to this realisation: Community makes you braver. As a community we’ve dared to dream and put our imaginations to the test; we have come together to do things that we never thought possible or we’d ever end up doing; and we have created in ways that no one else would but we gave it a go.
In 2011 ScribbleAKL may have started as a weekly event but it evolved into a community. Today and 199 events later it has transformed into something so much more.
I’m proud of what we’ve been able to achieve together. And what makes me even more proud of that is being able to say that I’m a part of the ScribbleAKL community with you.
It’s people like you, and moments like these, that make it all worthwhile.
Thank you,
And let’s celebrate!
Bhav
