On the off chance you have no idea what 5 POINTZ is/was...
Full story on what happened to the beautiful mess that was once Melbourne, Australia's RUTLEDGE LANE.
Now that the hangovers have passed,...Happy New Year!
Scribble Seeker was just sipping some coffee, surveying the "mess" in my office and before taking a deep breath and acknowledging that I'd need to tackle it today, another thought came to mind: Sometimes, MESS is beautiful.
This photo is from Melbourne, Australia's, "Rutledge Lane"; a place very similar to our American version of the former 5 POINTZ in NYC. And, much like what happened to 5 POINTZ this past Summer with the ultimate buff-out, Rutledge Lane got it's 'mess' cleaned up as well, but was done under the guise of a "performance piece" by artist Adrian Doyle.
(Will post links to this story and 5 POINTZ for further reading)
I suppose there is a time for every slate to be wiped clean and to begin fresh again. New Year's is just a convenient time to do it. So, while I won't be spraying my office in "Empty-Nursery Blue" like Doyle did to Rutledge Lane, I will, at least, get the papers filed away and the stack of graff photos pinned on the wall (where they belong). ...Embracing the beautiful mess...
Warning: waking up here could be very, very confusing.
In Chrysalis Stage
Scribble Seeker has been silent, stagnant, frozen and nearly forgotten for months. My apologies, though, let's be honest,...my followers are few at this stage.
It's been an inspiring year, especially the second half. Scribble Seeker has been so busy out there, absorbing, networking, and making discoveries, that this blog went neglected....and not for the first time. We've realized that in order to sharpen our skills of writing, educating and entertaining, ...we need to put in the work and share the musings that come to SS each and every day. 2014 is going to be a prolific year. Blog-As-Priority.
Enjoy the link just posted to FIVE 8's collection on BombingScience.com (posted just 24 hours ago). FIVE's bold lettering, color palette and emphasis on visual depth is captivating and noteworthy. SS is keeping this cat on the radar and looks forward to the next piece.
also...BombingScience is a great online resource for news, inspiration, gear and supplies. (Our favorite books come from this site.)

Have ideas for posts? Curious about past posts? Any commentary at all....shout out to me. It's all welcome.

Urban Wedding Photography:
The popularity of unique wedding photos has been on the rise, and couples fortunate enough to live in thriving urban areas have taken advantage of the city canvas to serve as vibrant backgrounds. I've seen it more in engagement photos these days since ceremony sites may not be convenient to the desired mural or wall piece.
These particular shots are a favorite of mine because the couple isn't merely posing romantically in front of the wall, blocking the art...they are kneeling, allowing the feminine script to shine. Also, this font is rare for a two color "throw up". I'd love to see more of this style develop in the Richmond area.
And don't even get me started on that nook of graffiti on nearly every surface...beautiful, energetic, alive!
Have some wedding or engagement photos with murals or graff in the back?....want to share? Please post!

Okay, so maybe I let the Blog "die" for a year, but in all honesty, the graffiti scene in RVA went thru a lull. Perhaps too many arrests happening around VCU??....who really knows. Scribble Seeker needed a break, some time to travel, see what else is out there and how Richmond's Street Art scene is expanding, leaving a more lasting impression on the city than the tags and bombs that pop up.
So what's to get excited about now?...the return of the Richmond Mural Project by Art Whino, that's what. Late July 2013...it's going to be amazing to watch and be a part of. Can't wait to meet and chat with this year's muralists. Interview excerpts will be posted as they become available. Thanks for hanging in, or just tuning in now.
Graffiti Trains NY Old School (Tribute)
A selection of Graffiti Trains in 70’s Early 80’s with some back ground music..
If there was ever a place and time I wish I would go back and experience…it is this. Granted, I would have rather lived the decadent Manhattan lifestyle in NYC of the 1980s…but then I would have missed most of this…
Alas, I will continue to peer over every photo and video of graffiti I can get my hands on to learn more, develop theory, teach the narrative, foster understanding and endorse this movement’s significance to the history of art and culture. This is my aim. - Scribble Seeker
HUNT holy shit this piece is so sick!
Good spot GR! Hard to tell from the photo exactly when this was done (can't see any signature/date)...but from the interior spotting on the "H", as well as the color selection, it looks like this was done around the same time as the Napoleon Taxi wall in Scott's Addition (buffed out) in June/July of 2011.
Teaser pic of AEST's work....reppin the D30 crew on the Superwall.
Excerpt from "River City Bombers"
AEST
Affiliations: DOS, Dirty 30 Crew, MC, WH
Ask any Richmonder that follows the street art scene or any of the fellow graffiti enthusiasts that document the scene; and native son AEST is among the top of the list of writers we deem “successful.” AEST, presumably to mean “aesthetic”, has been writing for nearly twenty years, which has given him plenty of time to tinker with style and development. AEST is considered successful because he maintains a commitment to his crews, has evaded the law and still makes time to tag, which, despite its often negative connotation, is essential to being a well rounded, well respected writer. According to word of mouth as well as an article in the July 2010 issue of The Art Of Storytelling magazine that featured AEST, he has been busy at graffiti since 1994. Other writers like ELK, SIGH, PENIS, LYES, and a slew of others that have been in the game for years, many of whom are also members of DOS “Dirty Ol’ South” crew, run with AEST and often go writing together. In addition to repping DOS, AEST will often mark his pieces with D30, MC and WH to note that he runs in those crews as well. Essentially, D30 (Dirty Thirty) is an off-shoot of DOS, and MC is a nod to MCA, “Murder Capital Artists”, from Washington, D.C. It is unclear at this time as to the meaning behind the WH affiliation.
“I think the first piece popped up in Richmond in like ’84 or ’86, and it was pretty dead after that until the early 90’s. It doesn’t have as much history as other scenes, but I love it, because that’s where I came from.” – AEST
“AEST is the type of writer whose level of talent allows him not to be married to one particular style; the type of writer who takes his surroundings into account when painting. ‘If I am painting a train line spot, highway, or a freight, then I am going to do some simple legible stuff, but if it’s a wall somewhere where you can take the time to check it out, then I will flex something more complex.’ Like many of his other DOS brethren, AEST isn’t much for words and doesn’t have any poetic reasons for painting graffiti. They do it because they are passionate about it. When asked how he would define his style, he said, ‘It’s a little bit classical I hope, maybe not too crazy, a touch of flair I hope.’ And he burst into laughter as he said the word flair. ‘Shit, man, I don’t know, I just write graffiti.’” (Art of Storytelling JUL 2010)

Knitbomb lands near the former McDonald's building
I can only assume that Knitorious M.E.G. has struck our hood again. This time decorating a phone booth at the former McDonald’s on Forest Hill Ave. Last year her Valentine’s Day Gift to the city was in the Fan. We’re pretty lucky to get this Valentine’s Day treat a day early. Thanks Knitorious for brightening up the neighborhood. One more photo after the break.

River City Bombers...Home Stretch!
Two years of research, countless days spent snapping up graff shots around the city in usually always less than ideal conditions, and months analyzing the work, the stories, the essence of the culture and the issues of legality and relevance are coming together to become...
River City Bombers: A Chronicle of Richmond's Contemporary Graffiti Writers
AEST, BRAIN, ELK, FELCH, GOEST, GUNER, GUSE, HERSE, HUNT, JOCE, KORA, MEL, NOTE, OCULT OSLO, REBAR, REPAE, ROY, UCME, SIGH, SUMOE + a handful of others...this is all for you. ♥
I'll be posting excerpts of the manuscript in the weeks to come...lord knows you've been waiting anxiously to see what I've been up to all this time. I also hope to get it published independently by the end of the year and get it in some local RVA skate shops, tat shops, record shops, etc. Exciting!
My friend Mickael Broth was arrested for graffiti when we were both living in Richmond, VA. I remember the day his place happened and we were all crushed. There was a movie screening for a film by our friends Day By Day that night and there was a 5 minute segment in the movie with nothing but footage of Mike getting up. Everyone just watched it silently. It was a perfect memorial for “Refuse To Be Smart”. All of a sudden the night switched from a movie premiere to a fund raiser for Mike’s legal fund.
Mickael Broth is now a well established fine artist still living in Richmond and he is working on a book that is a collection of the art and letters he wrote over the 10 months he served in jail. The book will also be a discusion of graffiti art and the other side of what happens to vandals when they don’t make it into art galleries like Banksy and Shepard Fairey.
He has a kickstarter like fundraiser up on United States Artists and he is more than half way there with 19 more days to go. I hope you can donate and help make his book a reality.
Also, just on a side note, acting as a getaway driver for Mike was the only time I ever ran from the cops and got away… It was a lot easier than I thought it would be…
Compilation video of some work of retired RVA graf writer / street artist, Mickael Broth a.k.a. REFUSE. He gave it all up after getting caught and convicted for painting a rusted railroad overpass on I295 back in 2004.
Just stumbled upon this low budget site that has snapshots of graffiti from all over the US and some International spots too. This ought to keep me busy for an hour or two...
