Amantani, Lake Titicaca, Peru: My relax with a Quechua family

 After a traumatic night in Pisco, Peru, after having been present at the great earthquake that almost destroyed the city August 15, I was in need of some rest, peace and quiet. I found exactly what I was looking for a few days later on the island Amantani, located in the middle of the shimmering turquoise waters of the lake Titicaca.I started my journey from the dock in Puno, with a round trip, two days boat ticket which cost me 30 Soles ( about 10 USD). After a short stop at the floating islands of Uros, we traveled three hours, until the float up to the bridge Amantani. When we landed we were met by residents on the island who organized the newcomers and the designated host families for us. They live with host families, including delicious homemade dishes and a beautiful hike costs 30 soles per person. Each family of Amantani are only allowed to receive visitors once a month to maintain their culture and to hold tourism fair and the islanders' hands. My husband and I were together with two French travelers and led by Juana, a nice Quechua woman in her twenties, to her house. During the ten minute walk, I noticed that it looks great terraces which I had seen from offshore actually intricate stone paths, walls and terraces that zigzag across the island, making it feel like we went through a maze of paradise. When we arrived we met Juana ten-year-old daughter, Maria, her elderly grandfather, who is Spanish was laced with a thick accent and Quechua, and her grandmother who spoke only Quechua. We had a very comfortable room with unbeatable views of the island and the sparkling waters that surrounded us. The women began working in the kitchen over the wood-burning fire where they prepared us a delicious lunch. We then had free time to rest, walk, and talk to the family. At 15:00 we were led by Juana and Maria, both dressed in traditional skirts with beautifully embroidered black veil, up the winding stone path to the marketplace. There, we gathered with other foreigners and their host families and started the beautiful ascent to Pacha Tata, one of two sacred hills of the island. Once at the top we were rewarded with stunning views over the lake and snowy mountains on both the Bolivian and Peruvian side of the lake. There is a ceremonial place at the top of Pacha Tata, which can only be accessed once a year during the traditional celebration in which half of the island's population makes a pilgrimage to Pacha Tata and the other half going to the Pachamama, the other sacred hill. We stayed at the top of Pacha Tata to see another world sunset and then headed back down to the center. We snacked on grilled meat alpaca then returned to our host family homes. Since most families in Amantani do not have electricity, we had candles to light our rooms. That night I slept deeply. The next morning, awakening to the sound of birdsong and the lack of engines humming and cars honking, I knew I had regained peace I had lost earlier in the week during the earthquake, and I was glad I had the opportunity to share this silence with the family I had lived with the Amantani.
