Klonoa 2 Chronicles - Part 5

Hideo Yoshizawa (@yoshi_clonoa ) is going to tweet more Klonoa Chronicles every Sunday (Japan time), this time focused on Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil in celebration of the game’s 25th anniversary.

Note: Going forward with the blog’s stance to not use machine generated translations, an English summary will be written along with the original Japanese text.

Summary: The development team reflected upon the lessons learned from the previous game such as the narration subverting the player's expectation that it would just be an ordinary adventure (like Mario having to save Princess Peach). They were worried that using this approach again would come across as nothing more than a run-of-the-mill action game to players or reviewers who only played the beginning stages. Therefore, the need to make a statement from the get-go was decided. They hoped to amaze players with the initial set up of the story, visuals, and technical effects. The very first thing that came to Yoshizawa's mind was a stormy sea with roaring thunder and forceful wind and rain. The team decided to make this the opening stage and began planning the story from there. To be continued...

前作の反省がありました。

前作では、ちょっとした好奇心から裏の丘に行ってみようという些細なきっかけから世界を救う壮大な謎に挑む事になってしまい、衝撃のラストへなだれ込むという、プレイヤーの想像をいい意味で裏切るための展開にしていました。

ですから１面は、敢えてごく普通の展開から始まっていたのです。ピーチ姫がさらわれた！マリオ、助けて～みたいな。

でも、最後まで遊んでくれた人には伝わったけれども、最初の方だけ遊んだ人や、ライターや評論家のように最初だけちょっと遊んで記事を書いている人には普通のアクションゲームぐらいにしか映らなかったんじゃないか？

そこでとにかく１面から派手な演出と、期待が膨らむ展開と、すごい技術を見せ付けて、この製品が只者ではないという感じを出さなくてはいけないと考えました。

そこですぐ頭に浮んだのは雷鳴が轟き、暴風雨で荒れ狂う嵐の海でした。それを１面のステージにする事を決めて、そこからストーリーを考えていきました。つづく

I am sorry to disappoint you but this in fact not true as the portrait is used during stage 5 from Reimu C route.

Later edit: Please understand that the stage 5 appearance of this portrait is not the single instance where it is used. It also appears during stage 6 from Reimu A route (and perhaps it even has more occurences, but I haven't bothered to check all of them). I only gave 1 example to showcase that the portrait is actually used, but it isn't the sole instance.
