∆Cults

I had the amazing privilege to see Cults for the second time this year tonight. I got to see them at Capitol Hill Block Party earlier this year, but it was a totally different experience to see them at a smaller, more intimate venue. They also had very lovely openers!

∆Mood Rings

Mood Rings, out of Atlanta, Georgia, claim interests of traveling through time and pineal glands (small endocrine glands in the brain that release melatonin), which I say fit their music style quite well. Their music is a blended dreamy, chillwave, groovy, delicious ear smoothie.

 ∆Sacco

Sacco, a nice little trio who trekked all the way to the Northwest from NY in an old, rundown van, was pretty sweet on stage too. They had a nice dark surf rock sound, perfect for listening to while driving in a convertible on the coast when there is a rogue thunderstorm, or something…

∆Cults

Cults, as always, were not one to disappoint. I was lucky to see them previously this summer, but this time I got to hear songs off their new album, Static.

As always, Madeline was a perfect combination of cute and fierce. Their sunny-soul-indie-pop sound is something that is awesome on recording, but it’s on another level when you get to see it live. If you haven’t heard their new album yet, you best get on it!

Radiation City

I am incredibly happy to say that the one band I have seen the most this year has been Radiation City [third time, and counting…]. This incredibly talented band from Portland, Oregon deserves great recognition for their music. Their sound is very original, and integrates old school and modern indie in a beautiful way. 

At their Neumos show on thursday, they released their new live album, live from the banana stand. They graciously donated sales to the Seattle band, La Luz, who recently encountered an unfortunate car accident [find out how to help here].

Check them out. Give your support. The music scene is awesome, and good bands could always use some more love & support!

∆ Earl Sweatshirt

The one time I show up to an hour after doors, and I miss the whole show. From what I heard, he played a nice little set, but it was short and very prompt. Bummed I missed him, but hopefully he'll be around again in the future. OFGWKTA!

∆ Widowspeak

Last night, I saw Widowspeak at Chop Suey in Seattle. They were thoroughly fantastic. They dragged you back in time with their dreamy, stoner rock sound, but each song was tight and together, like a solid steam engine crashing straight into your chest. The lead singer, Molly, stole the show with her soothing voice and her very charming stage presence. 

Widowspeak was definitely one of the best bands I have seen so far this year. I highly recommend checking them out live!

2013 has been an amazing year for live shows thus far. I am on am on a mission to see at least 50 bands live by the end of this year. Truth be told, the idea to pursue this goal came shortly after the summer started, when I moved to Seattle, one of the most inspiring music outlets in the country. 

I have also learned a lot during this process:

1. I want to do this challenge again next year. I live to see live music. It's about the only thing keeping me sane during grad school, in fact.

2. I would like to get a better camera to take along to shows with me. I've got my eye on a pretty little camera that I am hoping to scoop up here soon.

3. I would like to focus more on reviewing the bands in the future. Take some notes and share them with the world... Or an empty room. 

4. It's an expensive, and time consuming endeavor to see 50 bands in one year, but it is so worth it. I have never had a better, more fulfilling interest before!
