"Hey Ponytail, look what I gooot~!" His chiming tone interrupts the silence of this tiny break room, as well as the full concentration Stacia is currently granting her phone screen. A little birdie (more like a little flower, really. Thanks, Iris!) just so happened to let slip earlier how a friend of hers-- a certain avid fangirl-- has been missing out on limited edition merch drops and is now sacrificing her lunch breaks for a measly chance at a preorder slot for the next limited releases. It just so happens that Tomio had somehow gotten his hands on not one, but two! sealed blind boxes from a previous drop, and it just so happens that he's in a slightly generous mood today. A hand holds out to tauntingly shake both miniscule boxes right in front of him, as if to motion for Stacia to approach him.

lately, stacia has been PURPOSEFULLY taking her lunch breaks at a different time than other hunters to decrease the chances of being disturbed, needing to focus on the importance that is refreshing her phone screen. this is serious business. she has missed the past three preorder windows for the limited edition lumiere merchandise drops due to working, much to her dismay. the first two occurred while she was out on a mission that took... longer than anticipated, with poor signal (not that she tried to launch the website in the middle of it or anything), and the third one, with the theme she REALLY WANTED TO GET... well, she was just unlucky.

BUT THIS TIME, THIS TIME SHE HAS IT! if she just swipes her thumb across her phone screen enough times, surely it'll suddenly show that the blind boxes are available for purchase, right? (she set numerous alarms just in case, too)

so engrossed she was in the importance that was her phone that stacia didn't notice the sudden intrusion in the break room until she heard a melodious, mocking voice that could only belong to ONE CERTAIN PERSON. her thumb swiping paused instantly as she debated on whether or not it was worth entertaining him; if she ignored him completely, surely he'd leave and she could go back to more grave matters, like her phone. she was just about to fully pretend she didn't notice him whatsoever, but the sound of whatever he brought with him shaking filled the silence of the small room.

she can feel a headache forming.

the temptation to lift her head to see what he brought was increasing —what WAS that sound? — but that'd mean ENTERTAINING him when she clearly had better things to do. couldn't he tell? for good measure, she did one more refresh on her phone, an 'ERROR' sound emitting from the device as she finally looked up to look at him when she heard the shaking once more.

and froze instantly.

stacia was incapable of hiding her facial expression of shock— grey eyes widened, eyebrows rose, mouth agape. WAS THAT... THE LIMITED EDITION BLIND BOXES FROM THE PREVIOUS RUN?!? HOW DID TOMIO GET THEM?! she clenched her phone tightly as it took EVERYTHING within her not to instantly approach and abruptly grab them from his person. THE PACKAGING LOOKED EVEN PRETTIER IN PERSON. WHICH LUMIERE VARIANTS WERE IN THEM!? SHE HAD TO KNOW. she recovered as quickly as she could; shook her head, cleared her throat, fixed her posture, placed her phone on the table, and gave him possibly the fakest smile imaginable.

"t....tomio." she was trying very, very hard to keep her voice even. sound as if he wasn't holding onto the drop she coveted the most. those blind boxes were bait; she KNEW THEY WERE BAIT. she felt her eye twitch as she KEPT STARING AT THEM. if she threw her phone at his head and knocked him out for them with no witnesses, surely she wouldn't get reported to HR? there are no cameras in the break room. no one would know. it wouldn't be the first time she considered beating him up, but this is the first time she actually has a motive for it.

be nice, stacia. you can't just physically assault a coworker for lumiere merch. (a stranger, on the other hand…)

instead, she takes the bait. she approaches him swiftly. she has twenty alarms set on her phone reminding her of the upcoming launch; it's fine.

"where did you get them?! how did you get them?! why did you get them?! can i see them!? you'll let me see them, right?! of course you'll let me see them; i don't see why you wouldn't?! since when were you a lumiere fan?! WHY WASN'T I AWARE OF THIS SOONER?!" she exclaimed, rhetorical question after rhetorical question, getting closer and closer to him. she only glanced at him a single time; her full attention was on the two blind boxes in his hands.

Caleb watched how his quip landed. Watched the way her mouth fell open. Watches the indignation spark like a struck match. He watches her, listens.

Every word. Every stomp. Every indignant poke to his chest. He let her talk. Let her spiral. Let her defend him like he was something fragile that needed guarding. She was like an angry little chipmunk guarding precious territory that she refuses to name. He has to press his lips together to contain his laugh.

When she scrunches his shirt in her fist, he looks down at it briefly—then back at her flushed face. Angry. Jealous. Fierce. All for him.

He stills for half a second when she nuzzles him. Not because he’s surprised. But because even after she unleashes her fury upon him, he still wins.

Her warmth seeps through the fabric of hist shirt, her breath against his skin undoing the last of her righteous fury. He feels the shift in her pulse. The way she melts after fighting so hard not to.

“You’re not nice, Caleb.”

His hand settles at her waist—not tight enough to alarm, but firm enough to anchor her in place. Claiming without squeezing. “Nope,” he says, voice low and satisfied. “I’m not.”

She calls him mean. Says he’ll be forever alone. He almost laughs at that. As if that were even remotely possible. They are like two stars that will always remain in each other’s orbit. He knows it.

When she pulls back, rummaging through the bag, he watches her with fondness alight in his deep violet gaze. Stacia looks up at him again from the bag, the anger and jealousy’s gone from her face—replaced with something softer. A familiar devotion that she always tries to disguise with teasing. There’s adoration in her eyes. When she looks at him like that, it does something dangerous to him. Stirs a possessiveness within him.

The cookie is abruptly pressed into his mouth. He blinks once. Then bites down slowly, his eyes never leaving hers. Lemon. Sweet. Slightly tart.

His gaze softens—just barely—before something darker curls at the edges again. “You really think that’s why there’s no line?” he asks quietly after swallowing.

His thumb brushes the crumbs from her fingers, but doesn’t let go. “There’s never been a line, Stacia.”

His hand shifts from her waist to her wrist— guiding, not restraining—bringing her hand back to rest over his chest where she’d been poking him moments ago. A faint smirk curves his mouth again, but it’s gentler this time. “So if I end up ‘forever alone,’” he adds, pressing his forehead against hers, “it’ll be all your fault, and you’ll be stuck here with me.”

There’s no mistaking the deliberate way he says it, the way he makes it very clear, that’s exactly how he intends it to be.

a satisfied smile forms on stacia's face seeing that she seemingly catches him off guard, watching him slowly enjoy the tartness of the cookie. he may have BRUSHED ASIDE HER WORDS OF WISDOM, but surprising him almost makes it better. ALMOST. she feels the sudden hand on her waist as he's chewing but does nothing to discourage it.

she (foolishly) thinks that's the end of it since he agreed to her accusations so easily and with the food successfully quieting him. but, no, that'd be too easy. she catches the darkness forming in his gaze, sirens sounding in her mind in warning. her brows furrow cautiously as she listens to his DEFINITELY RHETORICAL AS HE GIVES HER NO CHANCE TO RESPOND TO IT question, eyes briefly glancing down at their hands. watches as his thumb gently swipes away some cookie crumbs.

she allows him to guide her hand back on his chest, allows him to invade her personal space as she feels his forehead against her own. feels his warm breath on her skin. this does little to quell her racing heartbeat, and she wonders if he can feel it with their close proximity. she's uncharacteristically silent (for once), as she stares into his purple irises as if his gravity evol is pulling her in.

his following words are (remarkably) clear, concise, and difficult to misinterpret. a twisted sense of satisfaction blooms in her heart, her possessiveness flourishing with glee. they'll have each other, just as it's MEANT to be. nobody in the way. he'll be hers. she may have taken a blow to her PRIDE EARLIER AND LOST (begrudgingly), but she's right where she wants to be. the center of his attention.

but, she won't openly admit that.

instead, she goes along with the playful atmosphere (and also because she NEEDS TO WIN this exchange. why? she has no idea at this point). stacia's eyes narrow, her nose scrunches, and a small laugh of disbelief escapes her lips, "my fault!?" she exclaims, with a mix of feigned offense and amusement. if her free hand weren't still being held by his, she'd swat him with it. instead, she uses that hand to press firmly against his chest in retaliation. she's definitely pouting.

"caleb, it's not nice to blame others for your potential failings in life." she says. she rubs the tip of her nose against his affectionately, her facial expression brightening with a mischievous smile.

"is this a cry for help to actually make a line for you?" she teases, index finger tracing circles against his chest leisurely. she's comfortable being this close to him. even if her traitorous heart shows she's not as composed as she wants to pretend to be.

"i mean i caaaaann...." she adds with a sing-along tone, "but i've always been impatient for lines."

stacia came to simone's cubicle guns-a-blazing and all but slams two '💖 LUMIERE'S NO.1 FAN 💖' iridescent glass mugs with a (rather impractical) mask handle eagerly on her table, eyes sparkling while ignoring the paperwork of (presumably finished) reports flying off the table from the action. she clasps her hands behind her back, rocking on her heels back and forth as she looks at her friend with barely contained glee.

"you would NEVER GUESS what just happened!!"

she looks over her shoulder, first to her left then right, to make sure no one was overhearing them. leans over towards simone as if this is top-secret (in her eyes, it is!), as her voice tones down, "remember that lumiere pop-up i mentioned was happening nearby selling the limited-edition merchandise that was voucher-only?! i was lucky enough to have gotten FOUR of them to have redeemed extra mugs!" ... was simone that much of a lumiere fan? does it matter!? they'll have matching mugs at work now!

"how did i get three extra ones when they only limited one per customer? weeeeelll, i asked some fellow fangirls, and they were kind enough to offer me theirs!" she says this with a CHESHIRE CAT GRIN, a glint forming in her eyes. she definitely did not subtly threaten anyone with violence to obtain theirs. oh no, stacia was very grateful; they were just so understanding when she explained her other friends couldn't make it, and they should give her their vouchers to make up for it! (that's definitely what happened)

"i already gave barbara hers! so one of these is yours. i'm so excited to see you use it! it looks high quality, right?!" she doesn't wait for simone to answer her rhetorical question as she nods repeatedly, "naturally, it's lumiere themed!"

she takes a step back as she picks up the other one and waves it around, "this one is for xavier." she playfully winks, as if proud of herself for remembering their fellow hunter's adoration of lumiere. "he's going to LOVE it, being such a huge fan! i'm looking forward to seeing the look on his face when i surprise him with it. one can never have too many mugs!"

“Could you not talk to her, please? I think they’re trying to date you.”

Caleb watches her for a beat too long. Not because he’s offended—but because he’s amused. If he’s being honest, her possessiveness over him is like a little ego boost, making him aware of the pull that he has on her, making him feel needed and desired.

The corner of his mouth lifts slowly, violet eyes sharpening with that familiar, mischievous glint that means he’s about to enjoy himself.

“Could I not talk to her?” he repeats lightly, as if weighing the gravity of her request. He hums thoughtfully, a hand coming to rub his chin. “Stacia, if I didn’t know better… I’d say that almost sounded like jealousy.~”

He steps a little closer to her, not to intimidate or press against her, but just enough that his presence in her space becomes deliberate. That he chose to stand close to her. His hand lifts, brushing a loose silvery lock of hair behind her ear, the action casual. It’s intimate without asking permission for it.

“She was asking for directions to the train station,” he continues, tone easy. “Not my hand in marriage.”

He can’t help the faint chuckle escapes his lips.

“Buuuuut~,” he adds, tone softer now, leaning forward, his gaze steady on hers, “if you don’t like it, I won’t talk to her. It’s not like I’m the official Skyhaven tour guide.”

His thumbs hooks briefly into his pockets as he tilts his head, studying her reaction like this is the real experiment he’s been waiting for. His smirk deepens.

“You know,” he says thoughtfully, voice dropping just enough to be provocative next to her ear, “if it weren’t for you, there’d be sooo many women lined up to date me.”

A pause. Perfectly timed for the gears to turn in her mind.

He lets the sentence hang for half a second before his expression shifts—warmth bleeding through the feigned arrogance. “Good thing,” he murmurs, leaning just slightly closer, his breath against the curve of her ear, “I’ve never been interested in anyone that’s standing in line.”

the knowledge that he was just being a good samaritan was at the corner of her mind—that the interaction was harmless, but...

she did not like it. (possessive). so of course, she had to open her mouth and be (a brat) honest about it (because, really, he knows he could do SO much better), and now she finds herself IN THIS SITUATION—

eyes narrow as she watches the smirk slowly form, eyebrows furrow as she watches his movements (always watching—), and her (pout) FROWN increasing in intensity the more she hears him speak. her cheeks are flushed from (embarrassment) ANGER. how—how DARE he!? she watches out for her gege, informs him when a woman might have not-so-pure intentions, and THIS is what she gets?

stacia is NOT a fool. she saw the way the woman's eyes had a glint to them as she caught her leaving his presence, that small smile on her face (she swears, she leaves caleb alone for ONE MINUTE to surprise him, and THIS happens?!). there were PLENTY of other ways she could have found out whatever she needed while walking aimlessly around in the city! that old woman over there feeding the crows, a mother and father with a small child looking in front of the dessert shop stacia just exited. STREET SIGNS. HER OWN PHONE!? THE MAP APP IS A TOOL TO BE USED FOR A REASON??

and HER? JEALOUS!? (possibly.)

her mouth hangs open at the AUDACITY at his accusation, but her brain short circuits as she feels his fingertips in her hair, feels the brief contact of his skin against her cheek. his sudden proximity is nothing new for either of them, yet she feels the sensation burning despite the anger (embarrassment) currently clouding her judgment. in response, she raises her hand that's free and forms a fist as she hits his chest, lightly. not enough to inflict any real harm on him, but enough to make it known that yes, she's aware of his antics, and no, she's NOT happy about it.

"YOU—" she starts, voice raised (slightly high-pitched, but she will NOT acknowledge that), "that's how it starts! it doesn't matter if i don't like it!" at this point she doesn't even register that he agreed to her bratty request— she's too heated; she's not backing down. "i know you're not WELL-VERSED," she stresses this loudly, using her lone hand that once hit his chest to now repeatedly poke it, "with romance, gege, but with first encounters it starts with a woman using her guiles with flimsy excuses. like ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS TO THE TRAIN STATION FROM A GUY SHE FINDS ATTRACTIVE, and—" her voice cuts off as her eyes narrow even further as she notices his smirk and relaxed stance. she's clearly insulted and does little to hide it. "... are you EVEN LISTENING?!" she accuses with a small, childish whine, her lone arm now flailing around as she stomps the ground.

he isn't; that much is obvious—the way he closes the distance between them even further, the way he CHANGES THE SUBJECT COMPLETELY. she's about to give him a PIECE OF HER MIND and say TO HELL WITH IT and hit his face with the bag holding the surprise she's been trying to conceal this entire time (HE'D DEFINITELY DESERVE IT) as she starts to finally raise the other arm, but his following words give her pause.

“if it weren’t for you, there’d be sooo many women lined up to date me.”

...OBVIOUSLY, because they USED each other for fake dating during their past. that was never an option for him. and now, well...

confusion is prominent on her features—her eyebrows raise as she makes a funny face, her hand against his chest now unconsciously scrunching up the fabric of his shirt. why bring this up now? did he realize she's about to actually beat him up and he's trying to switch the subject to nostalgia? with her bewilderment, she fails to see the expression change on his face, her arm frozen mid-air as she allows him to invade her personal space fully. she feels his breath against her ear, his hair brushing against her cheek as she slowly registers the implications behind his words. OH.

stacia feels the way her heartbeat suddenly increases in intensity, the way her chest swells with warmth, the way her face is fully flushed with embarrassment, and the way her raised arm trembles as her anger evaporates. she lowers it gradually, moving her head to nuzzle her face against the crook of his neck as she lets out a deep breath.

"you're not nice, caleb."

her voice is muffled, lips brushing against his skin.

"so mean. not fair. this is why no one's in line to date you." as she speaks, she repositions her face, moving the hand that was once on his chest away as well. she glances down at the bag from the dessert shop and rummages through it with her free hand, "and why you'll be forever alone." her words hold no bite to them.

"it's a good thing..." her voice trails off as she acquires the item she wanted, ripping off the packaging as she leans back slightly to finally stare at him. finally sees the warmth on his features. stacia's eyes shine with adoration, a small smile on her face as she shyly looks down at her surprise gift just for a fraction of a second. a playful look shows as she abruptly puts a heart-shaped lemon-flavored shortbread cookie in his mouth.

"you have such a caring, understanding, and forgiving meimei that won't let that happen."

"a FESTIVAL?!" stacia's eyes are shining bright with unsuppressed glee, arms raised with hands clasped in front of her face. if one squinted hard enough, they could practically see the flowers blooming and sparkles twinkling around the hunter. she's been so exhausted from the constant missions; her friend wasn't wrong—it feels like the wanderers have multiplied in NUMBERS. they need a break and stat.

"say less. i'm in. where is it?! is it a food festival?" playing on theatrics, she lets out a very dramatic groan as she slumps slightly. "i haven't ate ALL DAY."

Effortlessly lifts Stacia up. Twirls and spins and tosses her up into the air like a sign spinner. Gently puts her down before skipping off.

eyebrows furrowed with a frown on her face, stacia has been aggressively waving her phone around the area (like a lunatic) trying VERY HARD to get ANY BARS for her phone. why is she not getting any signal?! it's not HER fault!

so engrossed in her dilemma, she's been ignoring any strange looks anyone may have given her or any attention she may be attracting—she has MUCH BIGGER THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT—that she unexpectedly feels herself get lifted up (as if she were as light as a feather) and lets out a very undignified squeak.

"who—"

she takes a quick glance away from her phone and notices it was her friend iris that surprised her. stacia relaxed instantly and, instead of responding, took this time to look back at her phone. maybe with this new height, she'll finally get a signal? iris saw her moment of desperation and is offering to help her! what a godsend!

... UGH, STILL NOTHING!?

she's glaring daggers at her phone now as she feels herself suddenly thrown high and spun in the air for, quite impressively, a good amount of times, as she keeps staring at the bar hoping for a CHANGE. SHE'S SO HIGH UP IN THE SKY RIGHT NOW; SURELY HER CONNECTION IS AMAZING?! but no, nothing. her hopes and dreams are shattered.

stacia doesn't bother looking away from the phone screen, trusting iris implicitly to catch her with no issues. her faith was well placed, as she feels herself caught in her arms seconds after, as it's just another casual activity between the two. iris then retreats before stacia could really comment on anything, happily skipping away.

she'll catch up... later.

she stares at her phone. still no connection—

...

she narrows her gray eyes, practically squishing her face against her phone, and notices the symbol on the upper right of her screen. she feels her soul drain from her body at the sudden discovery.

... airplane mode was on.

she hastily moves the phone away from her face and looks up, taking a quick glance to her left and right (as if someone's watching her). while she deactivates it, the phone suddenly regains connection as it gets bombarded with notification sounds. she has no idea how that happened, but she's electing to ignore her phone right now out of sheer embarrassment.

"I-IRIS...!!"

she cries out loudly, chasing after her friend before she's too out of range to use her as a distraction.

She gets a running start from down the hall. The wind knocks her bangs back as she sprints with a near manic grin. "Catch me~!" Barbara sings gleefully and jumps into Stacia's (maybe not so) awaiting arms!

she hears before sees her dear friend running down the hallway, footsteps approaching at a rapid speed that stacia is, by all accounts, completely unprepared for. she didn't think anyone in their group was ACTUALLY going to follow up on her dare—what were the odds of THAT happening?—but is that going to deter her? ABSOLUTELY NOT! she NEVER backed out from her word! (don't let anyone tell you otherwise; they'd be liars)(subtly twisting her words around is a whole other story)

the closer she came, stacia only had a quick second to notice the crazed grin on her face before getting tackled by the full weight of her embrace. automatically, her arms wrapped tightly around barbara's body as they both fell backward onto the bed she sat on, stacia unable to support them both.

of course, if anyone asked, she'd say this was on purpose. her PRIDE was on the line!!!

matching her friend's hysterics, stacia produced a fit of uncontrollable laughter—cheeks turning red and eyes closing shut, completely at ease with the others' presence in her arms. she doesn't say anything in response at first, allowing the joyful atmosphere to linger in the room as she tries to catch her breath in between the chuckling.

after a moment, she gently pats barbara's back, a wide grin on her face forming as the laughter finally dies down,

"didn't i say i'd catch you?! you can totally count on me!"

Caleb lets out a quiet huff of amusement, the corner of his mouth twitching even as his fingers tighten around hers—just a fraction. He doesn’t look at her right away, eyes fixed on the screen like he’s giving her an out she didn’t ask for—a habit that he's become accustomed to.

“Right,” he says, tone dry, indulgent in the way that means he’s already filed this memory away as a lie he’s happy to live with. His thumb brushes once over her knuckles, absent but grounding. Protective.

He finally glances down at their joined hands, then back to her face, his expression unreadable but soft around the edges. “Terrifying,” he agrees, dry, “I can see how the imminent emotional vulnerability might get you killed.”

The screen flickers innocuously at a change in scene and he doesn’t flinch. He doesn’t pull away either. If anything, he adjusts, angling his arm so she’s closer, like this was always where she was meant to be, tucked against his body.

“Don't worry,” Caleb adds quietly, almost fond. “I won't let go," a promise murmured beside her ear.

His eyes drift back to the screen, the tiniest of satisfied smirks curling his lips. “I won’t even tell anyone you shrieked at the meet-cute.”

Caleb’s first instinct is to smile, but it didn’t quite make it past the weight in his chest. Her voice carried something softer than curiosity—something that pulled at the space deep in his heart that always belonged to her.

Of course he remembers. He remembers everything about those days—things were so easy back in the idyllic moments of their childhood: the dirt on their shoes, the heat of the summer, the way her tiny hand had fit so easily into his when they’d sworn it like it meant forever. He’d thought back then that keeping it would be simple. Just two kids against the world.

But the years had a way of taking simple things and twisting them into something harder, sharper. That promise—whatever shape it had taken—was still there, locked behind the same steel in him that kept so many other things sealed. But he remains resolute in his conviction to his oath.

He glances at her, and for a second, it was almost like nothing had changed. "Yeah," he says, voice low, threaded with a kind of reverence he didn’t try to hide. "I remember." His hand moves to stroke the swell of her cheek along it's path to tuck a lock of loose silver behind her ear, before returning to cup her cheek. "I haven’t forgotten, Stacia. Not once."

The door had barely clicked shut behind him when he hears her—rushed, uneven steps down the hall, a familiar rhythm he hadn’t heard in a week but could recognize in his bones. She didn’t even try to be stealthy. Caleb had only stepped into the entryway, the weight of his Farfleet uniform still clinging to him—heavy jacket, gloves half-peeled off, boots dusted from the landing platform—when—

"Caleb!! I missed you!!"

She crashes into him with the force of all the days he’d been gone.

Arms around his neck, legs around his waist, like gravity hadn’t existed until she found him again. He catches her easily, instinctively, muscle memory carved into every nerve ending. His back hits the wall, shoulder blades thudding gently against it as he steadied them both, his gloved fingers anchoring at the small of her back.

Her kiss was soft—quick—chaste even, just the brush of her lips to his, but it was enough to knock the breath out of his lungs.

His eyes flutter shut, a soft chuckle falling from his lips. She smells like fresh shampoo and the faintest trace of sugar, and she was warm in a way that makes his starched uniform feel even colder against him. He unceremoniously drops his gloves to the floor and tilts her back slightly, angling his mouth to hers again, this time slower, deeper. His lips part against hers like a confession, like a homecoming, the kind that asks for nothing and gives everything. She tastes faintly of his favorite apple candy and that alone drives him crazy—as if she was waiting for him taste her. Caleb allows his hand to slide up the curve of her back to cradle the back of her head, fingers threading into her moonsilver hair, and he kisses her like he's trying to relearn the shape of her mouth—how she fits deliciously against his own. He then shifts, pressing her gently back against the wall now, bracing her there like he doesn't trust the world to hold her steady unless he does it himself.

He kisses her once more—slow, reverent, his mouth moving against hers with all the restraint he shouldn’t still have.

"I missed you," he murmurs, barely more than breath against her slightly parted lips. "So much more than you even know."
