a few weeks ago i ran a survey for cricket fans on twitter and tumblr, so here are the results in a fun graphic for you all to look at! feel free to draw your own conclusions from them, i left my personal ones in the last slide 😉 feel free to ask any questions you have :D

disclaimer: this is in no way reflective of the wider cricket audience, australian english-speaking bias will bleed into all the results so nothing is the gospel, just thought it'd be something fun to run!

Firstly thanks for doing this!!! But I have some thoughts and questions

1. Love the top and bottom left pics (as an Indian fan)

2. Love to see ODI still having some popularity (it is my favourite format)

3. Kinda interesting to see how majority of the fans are female especially when there is a popular myth (at least in India) that women don't watch sports

4. Also surprised not to see Alyssa, Meg, NSB, Harman, Mithali or even Pat Cummins not in the top 5 most famous cricketers (could I have some data on how many chose them as their favourite?)

5. I genuinely thought RR had more international fans than RCB and DC. Plus I initially thought that MI and CSK would have more fans than DC, but then realised how frustrated the English and Aussies must be when they look at MI London, so makes sense (though could I have some data on them as well?)

6. Support DC W over DC M is so valid

7. Kinda expected more of an overlap between F1 and Cricket (most of my cricket moots here and irl cricket fans are also F1 fans)

3. i think one of the reasons i had so many female respondents was because of the places where i posted the poll. platforms like tumblr have a higher non-male fanbase whilst platforms like instagram and twitter were polled on by my followers (who are less likely to be male than the average user on either platform). this poll was definitely more for those who use social media rather than the general cricket viewership and you could definitely note some stuff about non-male fans finding safe spaces on social media to discuss sports. from a more personal perspective, i'm almost certain that if i had done something like this at a actual game, the number of male fans would be significantly higher,

4. pat cummins ended up being sixth with 5 mentions but i think the lack of a lot of the names you mentioned (eg. alyssa with 1, meg with 2, harman with 2 and nat with 2) can be chalked up to the fact that most of the respondents had listed male cricketers. it's definitely worth noting that men's cricket is significantly more visible around the world too. the lack of mithali was likely caused by the younger skew of responses (70% were under 25). a lot of people answered current players rather than retired (i only had 10 responses that included former players and two included people who had retired this year).

5. my understanding is that rcb is fairly popular outside of india, but im biased on that front as my favourite player is a part of their men's squad currently. from a general australian perspective, rcb are more popular here because of the international talent they have previously signed (eg. ellyse perry, glenn maxwell, ab de villiers, etc.). teams like csk (5), mi (5) and rr (2) seem to be more popular within india because of the indian talent they have signed (at least, to my understanding). additionally, many people who listed an ipl team as their favourite franchise team stated that they were from asia and primarily supported the indian national teams, so it's likely the results are being swayed by indians rather than australia (who mostly named big bash league teams)

6. to connect the previous answer to your sixth note, the high percentage of people who listed the DC-W also probably contributed to this. most franchises mentioned had a male and female counterpart, which would increase the likelihood of them being chosen.

7. a lot of australian fans mentioned that they watched a form of football and not f1, which probably skewed the results. off the top of my head, i think f1 had the most solo answers (meaning people *only* watched f1 and cricket).
