An apology to my notebook: "I’m sorry I haven’t seen you in a while, it’s just that I’ve finally been happy. You know I only tend to visit you when I’m feeling down. I’ve found someone who cares for me and loves me. He’s all I’ve ever dreamed about. Maybe I’ll start writing about the good things, but you know that I like to keep those for myself. I hope you’re happy for me."

Excerpt from a book I’ll never write, 122 “An apology to my notebook”

“Fragments of my heart are scattered all over the world. A piece of my heart is wedged between the bricks of a castle on a hill. Another part of it rests on a rooftop with an ocean view. I left a piece on the streets of a city I merely passed through and another in the streets of a city I could walk blindfolded. A piece of my heart rises every morning with the sun and another is hidden in every pink sunset. There’s a part of it floating on a pacific breeze and another drifting through the Mediterranean. Fragments of my heart have melted together with other hearts and now they live on in places I have yet to visit. But don’t be mistaken; my heart is not broken nor is it empty. With every piece I leave behind, I borrow a piece to take its place in my mosaic heart.”

“I could tell from the way you hugged me. Years had passed since we saw each other last. After saying a polite hello, we hugged like friends do. But then you squeezed me a little tighter right before you let go. I almost rested my head on your chest out of habit, because it suddenly felt just like old times. I thought I’d never be in your embrace again but there we were. I wanted to hold on tighter but I knew we were different now. The years changed us and you probably had someone else back home waiting for you. But I could tell from the way you hugged me, from the way you held on just a little longer, that somewhere, deep down, you missed me too.”

“Come back and lay here with me. Let’s watch the clouds go by, drifting without aim as they trace patterns in the sky. Let’s stay until the sun kisses them goodnight and the stars return to greet the moon. See the stars shimmer, see them shine; is it any wonder that our ancestors thought them divine? It almost seems as if they are smiling down at us together. Let's smile back at them, and at each other; a secret smile like we know the future.”

“The moon is ancient; how much history has been forgotten under her pale stare? How many secrets of lonely souls pouring their hearts out to her does she hold in her crevices? Confessions and tears aplenty pool in each crater, hoarded carefully over the eons. I wonder what will happen when she reaches her limit, when she cannot hold anymore. Patiently the sand in the hourglass trickles down; we will soon see what becomes of moons taken for granted.”

“Does the night not need another's light? Does it find comfort in embracing its shadows? From what I gather, dusk till dawn - I think it might. The night and I are a lot alike. I think we hold the same secrets, so many answers withheld forever like the lines we dare not write, so many tiny treasures that are be too good to share, but even the night has stars and fireflies, so I too let out an occasional secret or two. And even at its brightest, the moon provides a simple stage for trysts and sordid rendezvous - all without judgement or prying eyes. I am thankful for the night and the blanket it provides. Let there always be just enough light, lest it become a blanket of nothing but lies.”

“Summer frees the soul through honeysuckle nights and popsicle days. If only it could come quicker, to bring me the freedom I’ve been longing for. I can almost feel it... that warm, inviting breeze that whispers through the trees and makes me believe I am a bird that can fly far away from here, the breeze that will take me across oceans, through cities, and finally reunite me with the Sun. My Sun. That bright, shining star that creates life everywhere he goes, and leaves everything feeling cold and desolate when he leaves. I often wonder why he must leave me in the winter, why can’t he stay all year ‘round? I feel like an addict, craving him as soon as he turns to leave, screaming like a child at the thought of losing him yet again. I find myself constantly chasing that endless summer hoping one day I might stumble upon such a place, such a time, where life stands still and everything is golden. I stumbled upon it once, maybe I’ll find it again, maybe I’ll find him again.”

“Does the moon cry? Are the stars her teardrops trapped in an everlasting space, slowly forming black holes?

I asked her, once, why she cries and she said, ‘The sun outshines me. Even my own tears have grow brighter than me and I have become known for my dimness.’

So I told her that all that brightness would never compare to the beautiful phases she shows. I reminded her that she has a unique strength that can move oceans. I hope my words made her feel full again.”

Piggyback Writing

Hey guys! I thought of a writing game that could be fun.

How to play: send me a message with one line of writing, I will then write a line back, You will reply with another line... This will continue until we have created something

Rules: only send one line at a time. I think it might work better if you start with a question. The limit will be around 10 lines.

Bonus: if our creation turns out good enough, I’ll post it on here and tag you!

Example: you send “Have nights always looked like this?” I’ll reply with “I don’t remember them feeling this way.” You reply with “Something is different now-there’s a new sense of peace in the air” etc.

“Travel changes”

“They sat on a park bench that once was their favorite spot in town. A few months had passed since they last saw each other. The air, which used to be a warm breeze of grins and laughter, was brisk and heavy.

A question had been living in the back of her mind ever since the day it all went wrong. ‘Why didn’t you tell me you were leaving?’ she asked him, craving an answer to give her peace.

It seemed as if he knew she would ask this question and had rehearsed the answer. He couldn’t look her in the eye, so he stared at his foot as he stirred the leaves beneath it.

He replied with a new softness in his voice she had never heard before, ‘Because I knew you would’ve asked me to stay and I couldn’t break your heart like that,’ he looked up and their eyes met, ‘I wouldn’t have been able to say no.’”
