Merry Christmas Jen (@mayormillstho), from your OQ secret Santa! I hope you like this gift inspired by your love for two incredibly strong-willed and beautiful women - Regina Mills and Catherine de Medici <3
Silence permeated the air of the great hall, save for the soft whisper of rich silks, as every noble of the French court held their breath. Regina de Medici could feel the weight of every stare, her skin raised like goose flesh under each calculating gaze, yet her facade did not falter. Let them stare, she thought, her chin raising a fraction of an inch, her eyes as cold as the marble beneath her slippered feet. The layers of her gown pressed down on her and the air felt thick on her tongue as she swallowed past the lump in her throat. She was never meant to be dauphine of France, just has her husband was never meant to be the dauphin, but fate had conspired to make them so.
The Archbishop’s voice echoed through the chamber, bouncing off the columns and walls, but before it could die out, muffled against the bodies lining the room from front to back, Regina felt him lower the full weight of the French crown atop her head. Lowering her eyes, her lashes brushing softly across her cheeks, Regina took a steadying breath and opened them once more, this time as a Queen.
