Long post, my headcanon for Ritsu's dating history.
After nth time rereading SIH, I'm still wondering how Ritsu had been in several relationships before he met Takano again, when he's so uninterested and avoidant in canon, with Takano/An/Nao... So here's my attempt at exploring Ritsu's past girlfriends and his approach to romantic relations.
About Ritsu:
-Ritsu didn't deliberately look for relationships, he stumbled into them
-He never stayed in a relationship long enough to figure out how to be considerate to his girlfriends (canon, he's so obtuse with everyone. Even Takano recognized An wanted to be invited to Ritsu's room back when she visited his apartment)
-He never treats his relationships casually, always tries his best to make them work before giving up (breaking up) when it seems hopeless
-Probably has 2-4 short relationships/near relationships, because An noticed it was a pattern.
-Ritsu might not realize this, but as he started feeling pressured by his parents' and society's expectations, he tend to gravitate towards self-assured people who seem to know what to do in their life (not always romantically; Ritsu was drawn to confidence and competency in people-->Takano & Haitani)
-Despite being so indecisive in the manga, Ritsu isn't the type to begin or stay in a relationship/situation he doesn't want to be in. He tends to make decisive decisions only when backed to a corner (resigning from his father's company, rejecting An/Haitani/Nao's confessions, asked Takano to not go to Yokozawa early in the story, confessed to Takano when he felt threatened by Kurusu). Takano was an exception, Ritsu was basically procrastinating from a combo of paralysis from overthinking & taking Takano's persistence for granted. So I think he has the capability to break up cleanly with his past girlfriends
-He never seem to be particularly hung up with any of his past relationship (aside from Saga), so I'm guessing he never really let himself be vulnerable with his past giflfriends, and nothing really extreme happened.
Hc with OCs:
1.
His first relationship after Saga was with his classmate in uni, who confessed to him. They were in a same semester-long group project, so they can be considered as friends.
Ms. A confessed to Ritsu, but Ritsu said he wasn't looking for a relationship at that time. After some more time, Ritsu agreed to give it a chance, because Ms. A was so genuinely nice, and he felt comfortable being with her... However, Ritsu wanted to break up after because she reminded him way too much of himself with Saga (she wasn't crushing on his looks; awkward; so sincere) + guilt knowing he couldn't return her feelings. They remain friends afterward; Ritsu still has her contact.
2.
After that, he went for a long while just focusing on his studies, before Nao forced him to install a dating app (though Nao has a crush on Ritsu, I can imagine him doing this...). There he met Ms. K, who has this profile:
Ritsu contacted her out of curiosity, and this relationship developed in vague direction. Ms. K worked part-time as a barista, while she studied agriculture at uni. She was 1 year younger than Ritsu, lives with her mom and has a pet pug. She was the one Ritsu felt drawn to the most*, though he didn't really know why. Their relationship only lasted 6 months, before they drifted away due to conflicting schedules and different life trajectories. She was the one breaking up with him, they didn't remain in contact with each other after.
*she probably has vaguely similar traits to Saga: pensive, impulsive, self-sufficient, somewhat unguarded (can sleep with Ritsu around), blunt, has a soft spot for small animals.
3.
Ritsu went on more dates (2-3) through the dating app, but mostly everything only ended with Ritsu and his dates having awkward dinner at sit down restaurants. After he realized he wanted to focus on work and didn't really want to have a relationship, he deleted the app. Some months later, he applied at Marukawa :)
Inspired by chapter 25, just pure knife🔪🔪🔪
Panel redraw + genderbent version, based on the last pages of volume 8.14!
Haitani and Takano's interactions often crack me up... fem! Takano radiates disgust for Haitani super clearly, I had so much fun drawing it XD
SIH genderswap & panel redraws!
Fem!Masamune hc:
-Saga has long hair! She rarely went for haircuts, so she used hair clasps to make her hair more manageable
-She cut it shorter during college, but let it grow long again. Now her hair probably reaches her middle-lower back. Still no bangs (too impractical)
-Is 100000000x better at communication than her canon ver could ever be
Fem!Ritsu
-Doesn't have any jeans in her wardrobe
-Skirts everyday, very preppy
-Ojou-sama (was raised much closer by her mom, so her preference may be more specific than canon Ritsu)
-Didn't straighten her bangs like in canon; she grew them instead to look more mature
-Can't bother with long hair, has this 1 headband she keeps using everyday
-Trained in ikebana and tea ceremony
-Her apartment is marginally better than canon Ritsu, but still way too disorganized.
Other hc:
Male!Oda x Fem!Saga & Male!Saga x Fem!Oda=shoujo. There won't be any stupid misunderstandings/10 year separation :"|
I LOVE THEM
We can't look back for nothin'
Take what you need, say your goodbyes
I gave you everything
And it's a beautiful crime

- Richard Siken
They wish they had more hands if that meant they'd be able to hold each other harder, longer... But which ones aren't real? That's not for me to decide.
if someone had gone back in time and found pre-canon gihun—half-drunk, wide-eyed, clumsy with kindness he never thought would matter—and told him that one day he would choose to die, not out of despair but because he believed, truly believed, that another life—that the prospect of unwavering faith in humanity—was worth his sacrifice, he would’ve laughed, bright and bewildered, and shaken his head like you’d just told him a fairy tale.
he would’ve said he’s not that kind of person, that he’s selfish, useless, scared—that he doesn’t even know how to live properly, let alone die for something. he would’ve called you silly, said the world doesn’t work like that, that people don’t change like that, that he isn’t good enough for any of that to ever be true.
but he was wrong.
because one day, in a place that stripped people bare and called it fairness, he looked death in the eye and said no—not in surrender, not in fear, but with the quiet, trembling resolve of someone who had finally decided that if no one else would show mercy, then he would, even if it cost him everything.
and so he died. not as the man he once was—flailing and lost—but as someone no one had ever expected him to become. someone who loved too hard, too stubbornly, in a world that had tried to tear that softness out of him.
and maybe that’s the worst part. not that he died—but that the world only saw his worth when he was already gone.
ok but this scene
this scene
when the door first opened and those familiar brown eyes latched onto him, did he shiver inside as he saw seong gi-hun staring back at him?
and then:
'knows' not 'knew' i wonder if he sees gi-hun in mirrors and out of the corner of his eye? does he dream of him, his smile, his laugh every night? does he see the lack of life in his expression as he stared at his broken form and was the last to mourn his body over and over again? does in-ho hear his voice whispering through the darkness of his mind?
the fact he couldn't meet her eyes. so long he spent staring at gi-hun, obsessing, and he finally meets the copy of him and he can't look in her eyes. looking into her eyes, seeing the life, seeing the familiarity.
gi-hun lives through ga-yeong and he can't bear to look.
Arcane but it's on Snapchat
Took this idea from this and a friend-
these boys need to stop bringing work home, all their notes are about to be sticky (hextech gemstone from the hexstrap trust me 🤭)
and across the room, i see you (study of the dance hall, van gogh)
thinking how both romantica and nostalgia relationships transcended through time...
