@selasaurus
Iām going back to work full time on Monday and Iām devastated. I know Iām luckier than most in this country as I got 24 weeks full pay to be with my girl. A competition isnāt what I care for nor does it help my woes.
To get a year with my girl, to watch her grow during this formidable time, I yearn for it. Jack is taking over her care now. Heāll be with her for 4 months until we put her in daycare at 10 months.
Since I turned 18, I was on the go. I went after every dream I had. I backpacked through multiple countries. I worked for the National Park Service and the Forest Service. I got paid to raft and hike in the backcountry. I excavated a dinosaur (never expected that). None of that can hold a candle to just sitting on the couch with my girl. I was never even sure if I wanted kids.
being anti ai is making me feel like in going insane. "you asked for thoughts about your characters backstory and i put it into chat gpt for ideas". studies have proven its making people dumber. "i asked ai to generate this meal plan". its causing water shortages where its data centers are built. "ill generate some pictures for the dnd campaign". its spreading misinformation. "meta, generate an image of this guy doing something stupid". its trained off stolen images, writing, video, audio. "i was talking with my snapchat ai-" theres no way to verify what its doing with the information it collects. "youtube is impletmenting ai based age verification". my work has an entire graphics media department and has still put ai generated motivational posters up everywhere. ai playlists. ai facial verification. google ai microsoft ai meta ai snapchat ai. everyone treats it as a novelty. every treats it as a mandatory part of life. am i the only one who sees it? am i paranoid? am i going insane? jesus fucking christ. if i have to hear one more "well at least-" "but it does-" "but you can-" im about to lose it. i shouldnt have to jump through hoops to avoid the evil machine. have you no principles? no goddamn spine? am i the weird one here?
hydrous fluids: I have made serpentine.
geologists: you fucked up a perfectly good olivine is what you did. look at it, itās got anxiety.
I laughed at this a lot more than I probably should have.
Iām not sure if I should be proud or ashamed that I understand this and find it funny.
P R O U D
(Iām so glad anyone else got this hahaha)
@luna-and-mars could you please explain it? Iām curious and would like to learn
@alyssumlovesthecosmere explain a rock thing?? Always!!! š
We start with the mineral olivineĀ [(Mg,Fe)2SiO4], which has beautiful bright colors when viewed in thin section under a microscope in cross-polarized light:*
In the presence of aqueous fluids, olivine reacts with water to form (usually/in a simplified sense) the minerals serpentine [(Mg,Fe)3Si2O5(OH)4] and magnetite (Fe3O4) in a process calledĀ serpentinization. And serpentine, under a microscope, looks like this:
which compared to the olivine is a chaotic mess. My professor refers to it as āwhen bad things happen to good rocks.ā Or: look at it, it has anxiety.
(The first picture shows a sample partway through the process of serpentinization, with some of the original olivine (yellow) remaining in whatās called a mesh structure. All pictures by Alex Strekeisen.)
*cross-polarized light is a helpful way of filtering light used by geologists. It only lets wavelengths with certain orientations through, taking advantage of the light-bending properties of different minerals. So all those bright colors are real, not edited, hiding in everyday rocksāyou just have to filter out the extraneous stuff to see itāwhich I think is totally cool!
The same animal between 1886 and 2024 The turtle "Jonathan" is the oldest living terrestrial animal known in the world, born in 1832 and in 2024 he turned 192 years old. He lived through the First and Second World Wars, the Russian Revolution, lived through seven British monarchs and 39 presidents of the United States.
This truly is amazing
So my job is really cool.
My whole entire life makes me a sorta prepper.
Being a geologist I understand how natural hazards can knock us out. Then working as a technical expert on superfund sites, I realize how much corporations and DOD are poisoning us.
I see how those near these sites are affected by contamination. Truly, i see cognitive issues in these areas. I wish people would talk about this for Project 2025 which wants to smite EPA. T* already deleted a lot of superfund sites off NPL that absolutely weren't ready. So we will continue to poison our land and by association, ourselves.
It's utterly heartbreaking. I'm working on a Navy site now and im looking at the vapor intrusion in the buildings and it's nauseating. The plume is volatilizing and it some areas theyre are claiming the detections aren't from the plume but from the work being done in there. So two sources, the ground and their work. mother fuck.
When i was in YTT last year, the teacher and owner of the studio couldn't understand how being geologist would make me sad for humanity. At that time, I was working on a lumber site that was obviously dumping. The people downstream of it weren't well. I feel so much pain for these people.
It's beyond the groundwater plumes we create in the world.
I was talking to a friend who is pretty high up in the environmental world. Well, he's a 2Aer because well, so many of us environmental people are. He was in a gun shop and there was a kid in a stroller gnawing on an old gun magazine. This kid was straight eating fucking lead and the father was the one to give it to him. And this is why our citizens are stupid, we poisoned them.
I got an ultrasound yesterday and the technician said I had a pretty ovary lol I wish I was able to get a photo
Itās been a minute.
Hey.
This weeks camp view
Btw.
