has a dissociative survivor ever asked you or your community these questions? even if it was in a discord server or on a subreddit? congratulations! that means they trust you or their community enough to seek support when they're experiencing dissociative symptoms.

in disorders such as dpdr, did, or osdd, it's common to experience episodes of disorientation while being in a familiar place, which is called derealization. when a survivor feels disconnected from themselves, on the other hand, they are experiencing depersonalization. dissociative survivors may also experience many other symptoms such as: flashbacks, memory loss, identity confusion, hallucinations, dissociative parts, alters, trance, and many other confusing experiences. you can learn more about that here.

often, survivors will hide or downplay their symptoms out of shame or fear. if they are opening up to you, please be understanding. even if their behavior seems odd or contradictory, like if they're on the internet but are saying they don't understand what a computer is. dissociation isn't straight-forward.

here are some tips from a clinical psychologist on supporting someone who's dissociating. in the case of someone expressing confusion about who or where they are despite being in a familiar place, you can help ground and reorient them with grounding techniques.

there is unfortunately a big problem with people calling dissociative survivors "fakers" for just being openly dissociative. people don't understand, so they see it as attention seeking or nonsensical. please believe a person if they are dissociating. help support them or, if you can't, remove yourself from the situation until they are feeling better. communicate with them about it and your boundaries. just please don't contribute to the rising trend of people who screenshot this and post it to "fake disorder cringe" forums.

there needs to be more awareness about dissociation in mental health.
