Poisons and Remedies || Character Update

Selina was rather amused by the events which shook the palace and the city, and not all that surprised at everything which had transpired.

Her aunt, Jaqueline, had sent word from La Havre, and will be returning to Paris soon, but she’ll remain out of her niece’s path for reasons which still evade Selina’s knowledge -- and that itself annoys her to no end. More and more people began to come to her for help, some for remedies and some for help; and she would always help, whether it be moral or not. She is still unfazed by the whispers of war or any sort of chaos - what happens, happens, and she will endure it with as much snark as she can muster. What also amuses her, is that people remain fearful of her, which is quite relieving to her, because it means less problems and more time for herself. She’s still actively avoiding to make any firm friendships ( or relationships of any sort, but surprise bitch, you’re gonna have some emotions eventually and you’re gonna love them. ). Selina’s getting a bit darker, due to a certain rumour she’s heard circling about her and her aunt, which reminds her a lot of England, so consequently she is no longer as opposed to murder as she was at the beginning. And by murder, I mean poisoning.

Change in routine | OPEN

Artemis was something of a creature of habit, at least during the day. Since she rarely slept, and had more energy at night, she often went out at night, or got plenty done, always changing things up, but her days were always the same.

Once Apollo got to work - her favourite way of saying sunrise - she’d get ready for the day, and she’d always go to the same little cafe she’d found in her first week in Paris, and order the largest, most sugary coffee with crepes for breakfast. Although she didn’t need to eat, she loved food. Most gods liked to indulge in something, and she was hardly the exception, she just chose less indulgences than others. 

She’d always sit in the same seat as well, the barista and waitress adoring her since she always tipped well, and joked with them easily. This morning, when she got there, someone was sitting in her seat, their back to her, and she could see that the waitress looked apologetic. 

Not about to give up so easily, Artemis walked around the table to take the seat opposite the intruder. “You had to take that seat, didn’t you?” She lifted her hand in a gesture to the waitress to say she’d get the same thing, but didn’t take her eyes off the seat-thief. Perhaps it was over-dramatic, but Artemis didn’t mind.

It’s been a while since Hecate had gotten out -- other than her nightly fortune telling to everyone who dared entering her occult shop.  She had spied a few of her Godly friends, and noticed that Artemis always visited a certain coffee shop, and sat on a particular spot. Yes, Hecate knew that sitting on her exact spot would annoy the Goddess, but she never feared her wrath. After all, it was the Goddess of Magic that the other Gods were weary of.

Hearing Artemis approach, Hecate smirked, taking a careful sip of the black coffee that she’s ordered, along with a rich, chocolate cake that is has yet to try -- she was waiting Artemis for it. “The only other creature I had ever heard barking so loudly about a particular spot was Cerberus, my dear friend.” She fixed her icy blue stare upon the Goddess, smirking teasingly as she crossed her legs. “Well, I don’t see your name on it, so now I occupy it. You are free to join me on the next available chair, Artemis.”

The Witch and the Gentleman || Selina & Antoine

Antoine, despite the notable pain radiating from his side, still viewed her with a modicum of amusement. His eyes were steady and sharp, giving him a much more youthful air than his fifty plus years might have indicated. There might have been a few iron-grey strands mingled in his dark hair, but his movements were neat and elegant, without any indication of the oncoming hinderance of age. As he tilted his head to look at her more carefully, his air was almost regal, nothing put on or exaggerated, but simply an intrinsic part of himself. It was a strange trait to have for a poor soldier’s son who spent much of his formative years on the streets.

The amusement deepened in his gaze at her warning. “Such a preface is very much appreciated,” he demurred, with a flicker of a smile. It did sting, but he was careful not to flinch, instead only drawing in a slow breath to weather the pain. “I’d rather a sting than an infection. Musket-balls after all, are not renowned for their antiseptic qualities, even if they are known to cure much else.” the joke was wry, dry, and perhaps a little morbid, but the humour in his gaze elevated it from the overbearing. He shifted into her ministrations, patient and grateful.

“I’m not the poetry reciting kind,” he returned, with another flicker of a smile. “But if I were, what would you like to hear? An ode to your kindness, or your beauty?”

Selina only huffed in reply, placing the bloodied gauze on the table, before titling her head to examine the wound. She nodded to herself, taking the needle and the thread, and running the former through candle flame. Her mother had told her that it served as a sanitising, purifying way of cleaning the needle, and stopping any sorts of infections, and diseases which might transfer from it. At his words she nodded, pursing her lips in thought as she drew the needle through his soft flesh, producing the first stitch. “Yes, the gunpowder mixed with iron does wonders to the body. Bad wonders, true, but wonders nonetheless.” She commented with a smirk.

The witch snorted, and would have probably rolled her eyes if she weren’t so focused on the stitching. “I am not the romantic type, and I did not peg you to be one, either.” She replied, a teasing smirk forming on her face, as she drew the second stitch. “One more and it will be over.” Her tone was bordering on gentle, as she reached back to the gauze to wipe a wayward drop of blood. 

She was silent as she finished the final stitch, cutting the thread after making a knot to keep if from falling out. “There, it is done.” Selina placed the needle on the table, taking the balm in the process. “This will sanitize it. If you spark a fever or if the wound starts oozing, you will have to return.” She said as she gently rubbed the balm upon the wound.

Simone kept her eyes on her, doing her best to keep her gaze easy. She was asking her for the favor after all and she couldn’t risk losing her last chance at a decent night’s sleep. However, that did not mean she would let her walk all over her. She was skeptical about what kind of favor she might have to do in the future. But Simone had enough foresight to reason that it couldn’t be anything too bad. Most people dealt with information and Simone wasn’t above giving people half truths to get them off of her back.

She raised an eyebrow at her and shrugged. “I just want to make our deal clear. I have heard many horror stories of men becoming indentured servants from poorly made deals.” She paused, mulling over her options once more before nodding. “I agree to your cost. One favor for one bottle of whatever you have to help me. And if it doesn’t work the deal is off.”

Selina smirked, an amused, teasing smirk. The girl was careful enough, and it was a skill she appreciated. At her mention of horror stories, the witch laughed, a full, throaty chuckle which ringed around them. “I would never be vague. Why tricking someone if you can achieve something in other ways? A deal is a deal.” She said, although it was a little white lie. However, she saved her tricky deals for people who she didn’t trust, people she could exploit.

“All of my remedies work, girl.” It was a silent warning, coming out almost as a hiss. “Very well. One favour for one bottle. I have one in my cottage. You can either ride with me now, or you can come and fetch it later.”

Selina Wydville - A Snake.

Feared and hunted. Misunderstood. Venomous when threatened, with both her words and actions, Selina has found that she is close to the slithery creatures -- she, too, changes skin. She, too, can endure everything; beating, harsh words, neglect and the destructive fear which threatens to burn her.

Simone kept the woman’s gaze even as it turned darker. “I don’t make deals without knowing boundaries,” she stated evenly. She wasn’t afraid of this woman in the same way others might have been. She had larger enemies to worry about than this woman. “I’ll agree to your favor as soon as I know, you won’t have me do something unsavory like killing someone for you or cleaning up a mess you’ve made.” Not that Simone didn’t already do such things, she just didn’t want to do it for anyone who could throw her under the carriage later.

She straightened her shoulders as she told her that her problem could be fixed. “One favor. Just one. And you won’t tell anyone that I went to you for assistance.”

Selina sat down on a bench, her eyes fixed straight upon the girl. She had to give her some credit for standing up to her, even if the witch did not approve of it. But, she could understand her -- she, too, would not accept a deal without knowing every little thing in it. “Do not worry, girl. It is not your assassinating skills that I require, nor do I need someone to clean up after me. It is nothing... Disrespectful or dirty that I want from you.” She replied, tilting her head to observe her, before her lip curled up in amusement.

“Ah. So now you are the one calling the shots, are you not?” Selina’s amused smirk grew, before she dismissed her with her hand. “I never discuss my patients with others.”

Witchy Outfit || Selina & Marie

With all that had happened recently, Marie had been much more reserved than normal, feeling cut off from others. It left her feeling drained, but she was too stubborn to let even more of her life fall apart. She’d used her work to hold herself together after the loss of her parents, she’d do the same now.

When a woman Marie didn’t recognise walked into the shop, Marie straightened up, setting aside the sketches she was working on. The question made her smile, just a hint of amusement on her face. “There are plenty of excellent seamstresses around Paris. But I do like to think I can be counted amongst them.”

She walked over to her, curtsying. “You are correct though, I’m Marie. What can I do for you?” The woman had a striking elegance to her, one that Marie couldn’t help but admire, and she hoped the woman was here for a commissioned dress, easily able to imagine which lines would work best for her shape.

Selina regarded the woman with a faint smile decorating her lips, especially as she brushed off the rumors. “Perhaps there are, but I have a feeling you do not disappoint.” She spoke softly, the hint of teasing in the tone of her voice as she stepped closer to her. “I am in a need of a dress. Or two, if you have the time.” The witch replied to Marie’s question, her tone quickly shifting to business like. “Due to my particular reputation, I require something more on the dark side. It is both for business and pleasure, one can say.” The smile she flashed her was a knowing one, a smirk which condoned exactly what she wanted -- a hint of intimidation, simply to serve as inspiration to the seamstress. “Preference in colours are black, grey and every dark shade of red, violet and green. As far as other ideas go... I surrender myself to your capable hands, mademoiselle Duval.”

Simone watched her with sharp eyes, her suspicion hightened by the teasing smirk on her face. True, Simone had done some research on her–she never met with anyone without knowing /something/–but she wasn’t sure what to expect from her. The woman didn’t seem to be a player in the game, but Simone couldn’t be too sure. If she happened to be working for the Crown or the Cardinal, Simone was not going to be her source of information. She folded her arms in front of her chest and narrowed her eyes at her. “What kind of favor? I’m not agreeing to anything until I know what it is I’m going to be doing,” she snapped, narrowing her eyes at her.

At her question, she shifted her feet. “I can’t fall asleep. I’ll be tired, but I can’t seem to quiet down my mind long enough to sleep.”

Selina did not enjoy being questioned. She did not appreciate when people snapped at her, nor did she tolerate it, especially from someone asking her favours. She tilted her head at her, her eyes narrowing in a warning manner as she took a step closer. “A favour. One day I might need something, and then I will call for you. Unless you’d prefer your insomnia to -- remain.” She added the latter in a slithery voice, smooth and slick like the snake’s tongue, taunting the girl to question her further.

“That can be easily fixed.” She waved her hand dismissively at her. “If you agree to my terms.”

The Witch and the Gentleman || Selina & Antoine

Antoine let that little flicker-smile touch his lips at the sharp humour in her tone, and obliged her, carefully slipping his cloak off his shoulders. The white shirt that he was wearing was tanned brown from road-dust and travel, but the deep, spreading stain was obvious over his ribs on the right side. “Musket-ball,” he informed her, with a small twinkle in his gaze despite the pain that implied it wasn’t the first one that he had suffered. “Didn’t lodge, so shouldn’t be too much of a trouble.”

He slipped his shirt as well over his head, revealing a lithe, muscular chest that was criss-crossed with untold scars. With a hiss of pain, he removed his hand from the bleeding wound in his side and then fixed her again with his arresting gaze. “I’m a strong proponent of living an exciting life,” he admitted, his voice deep and calm, smoother than might be expected from his appearance. Even ragged as he appeared from his journey, the main impression might have been that of an counterintuitive regality, almost elegance.  He held himself like a man used to himself, an epicure in a world of the mundane.

Selina nodded as he explained, and turned towards a chest which stood a few steps behind her. Surprisingly enough, her animals were well behaving, especially the canine part of the household who usually wailed until someone new would pet her -- so much for her being a guard dog. The witch opened the ebony chest, pulling out a silver needle and a piece of thread, just in case the wound needed stitching. She turned back towards the stranger in her room, almost halting mid-step as her eyes landed on the tall man sitting by the table, his shirt and cloak on the floor beside his feet. Her eyes briefly raked across his physique, assessing the wound and inspecting for any other signs of trauma, her gaze appearing almost bored ( when, in fact, she was secretly admiring the half naked man in front of her.

The witch closed the distance between them, taking the vial which contained a natural disinfectant from the pouch she fastened around her hip, pouring some of the liquid on a gauze and dabbing it first around the wound then on it, after softly whispering out a warning; “It might sting a little.” She dressed the wound in silence, her eyes narrowed with focus as she cleaned it, dabbing the soft, albeit damaged, skin around it. Selina pursed her lips in thought, tilting her head to inspect it better, before the slightly leaned further to the side to examine the exit would of the musket-ball. She took another clean gauze, shifting her focus to the side of the wound.

“Well, you will live, but the front needs stitching.” She said after a long silence, raising her gaze towards the hulk of a man she was attending to. “That might hurt a little, so if you would like to chat, or recite poetry you may do so to divert yourself.” She added with a faint, somewhat teasing smirk, tugging at the corners of her lips.

UNF - From Antoine

The witch often prided herself with her keen observation, but certain things still managed to take the bitter, sarcastic woman by surprise. She wasn’t immune to certain emotions, and the things they inspired (or better said the carnal needs they invoked), but by the time Antoine had blocked her escape from the wall she was leaned against, she wondered just when did her observational skill decide to fail her. Selina has chosen to blame the certain spark between them on the constant banter which transpired whenever they would see each other, and the fact that he was always half naked in her presence ( at one point she really began doubting the ways he’d acquire his wounds – it all started to seem almost humorously staged; or he was really terrible at fighting ), and both happened at an alarmingly often intervals. 

She really should not have been as surprised as she was when he closed the distance between them, even though she did expect it, to an extent, but the fire behind his actions was what has surprised her the most – the almost violent way he grabbed her by the back of her neck, pushing her against the wall while his other arm snaked around her waist, pulling her closer as their lips locked.

By the time Selina has realised she was equally ferociously returning the kiss, she wasn’t even surprised.

Selina was a woman of her word. Naturally, when she said she would leave, and make their deal null and void, was merely a threat for the other woman to get a grip with the idea; to decide whether or not she really wanted to proceed with it. When Sybille lunged at her, her elbow to Selina’s throat, and the other hand on the wall beside her head as she shoved her against it, the witch couldn’t help a small, rather impressed, smirk to spread over her lips.

“Relax, dearie. I am merely offering you a way out. The consequences could be grave, for both of us. I will do my part, but then you must not back down from doing yours.”
