Closed for the season to protect our endangered Indiana Brown Bats, but just as beautiful from the outside!
Do you understand?
The top pictures are of a rosy maple moth, the bottom pictures are of maple seed pods. Rosy maple moths have evolved to mimic the seeds of the maple trees where they lay their eggs and that their young feed upon!
Does this summer heat make you feel like a greater naked bat (Cheiromeles torquatus)? Glands in its neck produce unpleasant-smelling, oily secretions—the scent of which has been compared to “stale socks drenched in engine oil.” Also known as the naked bulldog bat, this mostly hairless mammal can be found in parts of Southeast Asia, including Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and the Philippines. It typically lives in large groups, and colonies of up to 20,000 individuals have been observed.

Formation Friday!
Anastimosis - Anastomoses are networks of channels formed by dissolution of calcium carbonate at partings and bedding planes in limestones. Dissolution occurred as slightly acidic groundwater seeped or moved horizontally through the bedrock in the phreatic zone (at or below the water table).
Above the video shows an anastimosis actively being formed. Below is another example of an anastimosis, I think this one looks like a tooth!
Its screamin time! 🔴_🔴

Bat Cave 5.17.25 🖤🦇🖤
My favorite part of Bat Cave! The water was a nice refreshing 55 degrees fahrenheit (12° C).
OOTD time to go underground!
