“Ah, well I think first maybe we should go get our faces painted! That is, if you wouldn’t mind your face getting painted.” Most people Usagi’s age thought that face painting was childish, but she wasn’t about to let that stop her. She did hope, however, that Andrew wouldn’t think too little of her for suggesting that.

He didn’t get why that would be seen as childish. It was like getting a paint tattoo that lasted six hours. “That sounds neat! Let’s go on over there. I wanna look like a tiger.”

“I bet I could take them all on. And I think that because… well… I don’t know… but I know it won’t do anything much.“ It was apparent that he was just being stubborn at this point for the sake of being stubborn. Truth be told, he had never felt this mad at someone before, so he hadn’t the faintest idea of how to deal with the emotion except to keep holding onto it.

Kindness sighed and forced a small smile. “I know you want to, but sometimes it’s okay to let others help you. The sins are powerful and have been chosen for a reason just as we’ve been chosen. It’s our job to keep others like you safe from them, so you’re going to have to trust me.”

Then she relaxed. “If you’d like, I know someone who is very good at handling anger. Another virtue. We wouldn’t want your anger to allure either of the Wraths to you.”

And from there the two of them were off to the park. Once Usagi finally had the time to shut up and think a bit, she did notice something a little odd about her companion. It wasn’t anything bad, but he was emitting a sort of energy that was strong and positive at the same time. She brushed it off as maybe him just having a very good mood, but made sure to keep a note of it in her head. Once they finally got to the park, she smiled and said, “Well, here we are! Gosh, it looks so much bigger than I thought it would be! What should we do first?”

Chastity didn’t want to be too public about who he was, so he mainly used his human name when interacting with humans. Part of him noticed something with Usagi, and it was a strange mix of power. Goodness radiated from within, but there was a touch of something else. Something... dark yet familiar. Like the sins. Did she know one of the sins? He wasn’t about to ask her himself. She might be upset that a friend she’s made is up to no good.

“This is a big park...” He blinked. Then he smiled at Usagi. “Well, I was kind of hoping you’d lead! You seem to know a lot more about this festival than I do. What do you suggest?”

“Then I’ll beat them all up in that case! Anyone that wants to mess with me! And… well, I guess you can give me a blessing… but I doubt it’ll do anything,” Pax grumbled grumpily.

“The sins are very strong contenders. I don’t know if you’d be able to take them all even if you tried. That’s why there are virtues to counter them...”

Kindness’s expression softened. “Why do you think that, my child? I promise my blessing is as strong as any of our blessings, and it will be especially effective against Envy.”

Usagi’s eyes lit up and her smile only got bigger. “Well thank you for letting me go with you. The honor is all mine. Now then, onto the park~!”

“Of course. The more the merrier.” Chastity grinned and started towards the park. “Awesome. To the park!”

“Oh…” Pax looked down at the ground angrily, feeling betrayed a bit by someone that he considered to be a good acquaintance… although, to any normal person, he’d likely be seen as not so great, but unfortunately Pax wasn’t all that smart. “…That makes me very mad,” he said, stomping one of his feet. “Just wait until the next time I see that guy. I’m going to give him such a punch!”

Kindness frowned. “I understand your anger, but it’d be wise not to act on it. You might attract another sin to feed off of that and encourage you to do more dangerous things. You need to be careful.”

“I can place a blessing upon you if you’d like. It will protect you from Envy for a time.”

“Purgatory? What’s that? I know about Heaven and Hell, but I’ve never heard about Purgatory. And do you really think that Envy would try to corrupt me? That… that’s just so mean. Why would he want to do something like that?”

“It’s kind of like a waiting room to get into Heaven where you’re purged of your sins. You can only go if you repent your sins before you die.” Kindness looked down at the ground briefly. “Some are not lucky enough to make it there, and I weep for them.”

She sighed. “Envy is a sin, and it’s a sin’s job to corrupt as many souls as possible so that he and the others can drag them into Hell after death. It’s my job as a virtue to save them.”

“Well good! And, umm, not to be rude or anything by inviting myself, but would you mind if I tagged along? I’m not doing anything right now and going to a Spring festival with someone else instead of myself sounds like it could be some fun!”

Chastity thought about it for all of two seconds before he grinned and nodded to her. “Sure! I love having company when I go to things anyway. It seems kind of lonely to go to a festival alone, doesn’t it? I’d be honored if you joined me.”

“No problem! And hey, guess what else? At the park, they’re actually having a small festival today for Spring finally being here. There’s face painting, balloon animals, origami demonstrations, and food there! So if you were thinking about going to the park, that would certainly be the place to head today.”

Andrew gasped. Festival, festival, festival— “That sounds great! I’ll definitely head there today. I love like, all of those things. Festivals are super fun, too. Thanks for letting me know. I was already headed there, but now I’m even more excited to go.”

“It will? …But… But if I make a contract with a sin, I can have a wish granted. That sounds like it would be cool…” Pax looked a little down at the thought of not being able to make such an irresponsible decision. He knew that Kindness was probably right and yet… there was something alluring about making a contract when you knew you weren’t supposed to.

Kindness frowned and crouched down. She gently placed a hand on his shoulder. “I understand the appeal, but Envy wishes to corrupt you. That corruption won’t do well for your soul. Making a contract with a sin is a one-way ticket to Hell. Even if one of us were to break that contract for you, you’d be in purgatory for some time before reaching paradise.”

“Andrew. What a nice name. It kind of reminds me of the guy who runs the arcade in town. His name is Andrew too. And speaking of the arcade, you should really stop on by it. It’s so fun in there! All you need are quarters and you’re ready to go!”

“Yeah? That sounds cool. I don’t really go to arcades very often.” But maybe he should? They sounded like fun. “I’ll have to break my five or something then. Maybe I’ll stop by there sometime and check it out. Thanks!”

“Yeah. I think it was Envy that I met? He isn’t very nice, truth be told, but he’s okay I guess. And no I haven’t made any deals… he said that I probably couldn’t make any deals because… well… I’m a robot… but that shouldn’t stop me from being able to make any deals, right? He probably just doesn’t like me, that’s all.”

“Ah, Envy. It’s part of my job to make sure he doesn’t spread his influence too far,” she said.

She raised her brows when he mentioned being a robot. That made a lot of sense, actually. “Actually, I don’t know how it works with robots and souls. Your kind is still relatively new to the universe. I sense that you’re more than just a machine, though it’s better that you didn’t make a contract with him. If you have a soul, not making a contract with protect it.”

“Oh. Is that all? That sounds kind of boring, but it could be an adventure too. Hmm… well tell me something else. Do you virtues make deals with others too, like the sins? Maybe that’s another reason why you’re here?”

“It’s not too boring. Things are really nice here.” Not as nice as Heaven, but still nice. “We don’t make deals, no. You met the sins?”

How did she not know that? Kindness was certain they knew what the sins were up to most of the time, but she supposed they weren’t incapable of keeping secrets. “We usually break their deals. You haven’t made a deal, have you, child?”

“I’ll say! We haven’t had weather this good in months, so I’m glad to see that things are finally starting to settle down… Oh, by the way, I’m Usagi! Nice to meet you!” She said, offering him her hand to shake.

“Oh, me, too. I can wear t-shirts and not need a winter coat for once, and the sun feels so nice!” He took her hand and shook it. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Usagi. My name’s Andrew.”

“Oh… you’re a virtue from Heaven?” Pax thought for a moment, then a wide grin spread across his face. “Oh my goodness, that is so cool!! I have so many questions to ask! First of all, what are you doing here on earth? Are you here to visit somebody or something?”

“Yes.” She shrugged her shoulders when asked about her reasons for not being back home. “The others and I decided to come down and see what was going on. I don’t really have anyone in particular to visit.”

“Kindness?” He tilted his head and looked at her with slight confusion. “Well, I’ll call you by your proper name if that’s alright, but why is it Kindness? I thought kindness was a sort of trait that a person possesses, not a name.”

“That’s why people find it strange and use my other name,” she said. Kindness smiled. “It’s my name because I’m one of the seven heavenly virtues. We each take on the name of our virtue.”
