CONCEPT STATEMENT
ADAD1002 Major Project

2. Can creative acts be rebellious when rebellion has become canonised in art, design and media histories? What would a contemporary creative rebellion look like?
With this project I wanted to explore the medium of moving image and sound to explore multiple concepts of rebellion and try to create a personal story/journey that would portray this.
By using video and not being constrained to any amount of time I was freely able to explore different ideas and experiments that linked each other together. The piece was made using an Iphone 5s in a horizontal position using the standard camera app and then later processed into the video editor Finalcut Pro. For the music I sampled different electronic artists from radio stations on a an app called radio.net and then later used Ableton’s music software to sample and add further instrumentation.
Experimenting with colour and greyscale was an interesting experience during post-processing because I was able to alter the feelings of the scenery and emphasize different emotions linked to the music.
The idea/project started out from an idea of documenting travels that would normally take place during a week and manipulating them by adding different sources of media/music/video. I have attempted to creatively use (Sample) other artists music and video to create a work that explores subtle relationships of rebellion in every day to day life. The samples have been used to create a contrast of my own world to another culture/genre that I have been interested in. Using an old laptop from which I managed to fill with pirated software I was able to create a soundtrack through samples that would give the video structure through experimenting with different sound effects like delay and reverb.
By using a DIY approach with limited resources I set out to record as much as possible and researched ways to combine
muisc and video that I found would work to create a piece that would reflect different aspects of rebellion.
Being influenced from a large variety of films and music, I found the artist - Paul Clipson who creates very surreal worlds through a combination of camera effects of people and places that have hidden and mysterious relationships which seem
interlinked. This influenced me to try different ways of framing the camera in a way that seemed other - worldly but still presenting a reality.
Continuing on from ‘Assessment 1’ exploring the rebellion through a smashed phone as a metaphor for a heart, I wanted to use a phone as a way to express a deeper visual understanding of a personal story and show that it can be used creatively. Being inspired by indepenent films with low budgets the phone camera creates a lofi aesthetic. With having a camera and being able to document everyday events/places I wanted to see how a place changes when an another source is introduced, forcing the viewer to re-interpret the situation and take into account more realisations/
happenings.
The locations I shot are places that I travel to and from, big open spaces, industrial machinery that give a feeling of
loneliness and despair, I wanted to contrast this with footage from other artists to show relations betweens cultures,
and personal struggles. With the music carrying a droney atmospheric presence, I researched different types of electronic music and found artists that use minimal use of sounds to work best in experimenting moods and feelings. One particular artist “Mika Vainio”
whose album “Konstellatio” (2014) was able to listen to and actually feel a place and time, was almost physical. This had me wanting to
explore a deeper connection of how sound effects the places we go to and how capable it is to change our moods and perceptions of experiences.
With this piece I have chosen not to include text/writing or be stuck to any type of narrative and want it to be completely up to the viewers interpretation. The sampled video’s that ive chosen follow the lifes of different characters and portray a sense of longing for change and introspective thoughts. The act of attempting to creatively show subtleties of a rebellious nature have given me a more
expressive moodboard for life in general and a more exciting experience when travelling and being able to use video and sound to
further my understanding of culture and art.

“There’s really no such thing as the ‘voiceless’. There are only the deliberately silenced or the preferably unheard”.
This quote taken from Arundhati Roy is an important part of the creation of this poster. That not every person has the choice or freedom to express what is going on in their lives due to conflicts, the media or systems in place in order to silence them.
With today’s technology and ever increasing social networks I wanted to explore what it would be like to destroy these foundations, to live in an analog world and not having to live up to the expectations/control of social media.
What if everybody had decided to disconnect, what kind of place would we live in? Are countries/places without technology benefiting?
The smashed iphone is a symbolic interpretation and rebellious act of the detachment from the emotional struggles, overload of news and constant stimulation of keeping up with the world. That at any moment a person has come to a realisation that this device has potentially taken over their life and dealing with a loss of identity.
The iphone displaying a damaged iphone is a metaphor for a broken heart, this sense of being totally disconnected to the outside world.
During my research I found artists that were using different mediums to express their feelings in countries that did not allow any creative expression. In particular Shirin Neshats work of oppression against Muslim women. Thesubject of protecting your culture and being proud of your identity. even when people are blind to whats happening.
This poster explores the possibilities that an individual has the opportunity to creatively rebel against todays world of social media and the information highway.. As well a symbol for the people who are kept under a system of control and limited freedom of expressions.
