Idk something poetic about lottie expressing outward doubt in the wilderness for the first time (questioning its goodness after finding out about javi’s death) versus natalie expressing outward belief in the wilderness for the first time after the same event (telling travis the wilderness chose). They’re so two sides of the same coin

So is it like a requirement that every season of the pitt ends with santos giving a random person she doesn’t really know the exact thing they need? First she adopted whitaker and gave him a home for fun apparently and now she’s giving mel the room to have her own passions and life outside of her sister. Santos is winning tbh

So i just rewatched the episode where shauna butchers javi and i have a whole new pov on the whole “they made her butcher him!!!” argument that people make all the time because that is wholly fan made and it pisses me off

First off, Shauna let Javi die and was maybe the inciting incident to his death. When he fell into the ice and they all spread out, akilah said that they should pull him out, and Shauna was the one to call her back and say wait, essentially drawing the line where they allowed him to die

Second off, when they bring him home, no one ever said “hey shauna go butcher him” she took initiative, grabbed her knife and walked out of the cabin where travis was holding his brother’s newly dead corpse, not allowing any time for him to grieve, instead standing in front of him with clear intentions to butcher his brother

Once they strip him down, Tai, Van and Nat were all still out there with her. Natalie is the one to cover Javi for his privacy, and Van tilts Javi’s head for Shauna’s knife. Shauna moves forward, makes the first incision, and then SHE tells all of them that they should go.

They did not leave her there alone. She told them to go. They did not force her to butcher him. And she let him die. She isn’t a victim here, she is just as if even more so complicit and responsible for Javi’s death

Something i’d love to see in season four is something that i’d really have loved to see in season 3 is that the inciting incident to season 4 being that they run out of bullets. With the animals dead and it being winter, it seems like a logical step to take that if they run out of bullets, a hunt seems in their near future. I know they said back in season one that they had a near infinite supply, but they could not have possibly grabbed all the bullets before the cabin burned down, and even if they had, they’ve been out there for a while. If they run out of bullets, hunts would be more frequent, and depending on how the rescue situation goes and how quickly they get found, it makes sense if they crammed in three or four more hunts in the next couple weeks. Also, if Nat doesn’t go back to base camp or gets rescued first, the others might think that she died or rescue didn’t work out for them and go deeper into the crazy i wish we’d gotten to see in season 3

Yellowjackets Analysis and Theory: Misty and the Media Post Crash

The more i think about what it was like for them post crash, the more this theory circles in my head a little. Putting the pieces together of what we’ve been given, I see that there seemed to be a unique post crash aspect of their lives, and that is media attention.

From what we know about their post crash lives, their story seemed to have gained a bit of a cult following that’s probably similar to true crime fanbases- that is, enthusiastic and maybe well meaning but also disrespectful, invasive, and parasocial. We see this in the obvious themes of them being harassed for their real story, but also in season 2, Misty has a conversation with Walter where she assumes he’s “one of those yellowjackets obsessed people”, also assuming that she is his “favorite”. This to me implies a kind of fandom surrounding them, that people would have favorite survivors

This doesn’t quite seem concurrent with a group that shut out all interaction with the media beyond a basic, official account of events, so a theory kind of emerges here and here is my take on it

I think the survivors, specifically Misty, interacted with the media post crash

For misty, this makes the most sense. I went back to season 2 episode one during the post crash scene, and I found two screenshots that interest me

At first, Misty seems confused/overwhelmed by the media attention, which makes sense. However, after the reporters start calling out her name, her demeanor changes significantly

Now, she seems excited by the attention, which is very in character for her. The whole reason she destroyed the black box and stranded them all there was because she enjoyed the newfound attention and status she had in the group, she enjoyed people wanting something from her and needing her

So, I don’t think it’s at all a reach to say that upon arriving home, she might have traded being needed by her teammates for her medical skills for being given attention by the media for being one of if not the only survivor to actually engage with them and give them something beyond the official story to go off of

While i don’t at all think that Misty gave out any information about their crimes, or she would be definitely dead, I also think it’s in character for her to embellish the story, paint them as a group of very very close friends who went through a terrible thing together and are now trauma bonded for life (which is actually something she says about her relationship to the other survivors).

This is pretty concurrent also with how the other survivors treat her. In the wilderness, she is treated like kind of a nuisance, someone to make fun of and someone to not be trusted really, but as an adult, there seems to be a general consensus that NO ONE is friends with or likes misty, that she’s a crazy outsider who they won’t even call to notify about important events that affect them all (like adam dying). This would be in line with someone who went to the media with a version of events that ended up making them bigger targets than they already were, maybe put pressure on them for group interviews or different versions of events

And also, possibly unrelated tidbit, adult misty uses a LOT of therapy speak. Trauma bond, complicated relationships, and also she constantly refers to the other survivors as her best friends and gets very upset when the feeling isn’t reciprocated despite it being pretty obvious none of them ever considered her a friend. This would make sense if she repeated a version of events of their time out there so much that she managed to convince herself it was true and they were actually best friends. Most notably, after Travis died in season 1, Misty was seen on a wikihow article for how to comfort someone who knew someone who committed suicide. That kind of gives me an insight into how she approaches her life, kind of relying on psychology for what she should say and how she should act, not actually acting with her emotions in certain situations. It would make sense for someone who’s been sticking to a false narrative for 25 years

Lottie’s not a cult leader in the teen timeline btw. It’s hard to distinguish religion from cults especially when the religion did eventually evolve into a cult, but for the sake of discussion I’m going to be referencing the period of time where Lottie was the leader of the yellowjackets and giving my thoughts on why she isn’t a cult leader

First off, Lottie has a genuine belief in the wilderness. This is demonstrated in a billion ways and isn’t contested i don’t think. Lottie’s leadership is founded in a genuine, true belief in the supernatural (which in my opinion is valid bc there was obviously something out there or at least reason to belief so), which already differs from a typical cult, which is usually founded on a faux religious front that hides manipulative intent by the leader. Im not gonna say every cult has a leader that doesn’t believe in their own religion cause its not true but its worth mentioning

Second off, Lottie never even wanted to be leader. Typically, cult leaders are cult leaders because they want control. They WANT the leadership in order to control their followers, and will go to extreme lengths for that control, and often portray themselves as the only one who can interpret what the religious figure wants. Not only did Lottie never want to be leader (which she says so verbatim), she also easily hands off her leadership Natalie. No cult leader in the history of ever has willy nilly handed off their leadership to the biggest and most outspoken opponent of their cult, because that would ruin the cult.

Third off, Lottie does not fear dissent. She has her beliefs and tries (admittedly, very hard) to get people to believe them, but she does not as leader orchestrate any sort of punishment to those who don’t believe (natalie and ben, namely, but also Shauna). Cult leaders run a tight ship, dissenters don’t just get to walk around free. Not only does Lottie not enforce any rules about belief, she goes out of her way to help the dissenters in the group (ESPECIALLY shauna). She even goes so far as to take punishment for HERSELF rather than others (letting Shauna beat her up, offering herself to be food in the event of her death). No cult leader does that shit.

Fourth off, and very crucially, Lottie has never once put herself in the position of being the only messenger of the wilderness. She constantly encourages everyone else to also listen (especially van, travis and akilah) and she listens to them, even when she doesn’t hear that same message. Cult leaders do NOT do that. Lottie has always made the religion open to everyone and had everyone’s input be valid. She even says that she partially stepped down as leader because everyone could hear the wilderness now instead of just her. Cult leaders almost 100% of the time will advocate for themselves as the only one (or occasionally ones) who can hear the wilderness. Lottie never asked for followers, she wanted equals. And that’s why she simply cant be a cult leader

Okay this is important, i am not saying she’s innocent or that the wilderness religion was actually fine and she’s blameless. She’s obviously not, and in s3 we get to see a more desperate and violent version of her than we saw in her actual leader era. This post is solely bc i know a lot abt cults and i don’t like that everyone calls her an evil cult leader because she’s not.

Pt 2 explaining why shauna IS a cult leader

While lottie may have started the wilderness, her leadership and shauna’s leadership are very different beings

While Lottie’s belief in the wilderness is marked by total devotion to the wilderness and the idea of an It that needs listening to, Shauna has been staunchly against the idea of the wilderness since day one. I’d actually argue that Shauna is THE nonbeliever of the wilderness, because even the people who didn’t believe in the actions of the group (natalie and ben, namely) are demonstrated to have some sort of belief in an It (ben has his encounter with something in the caves, and natalie talks to a “whatever you are” while laying ben’s bones to rest on the plane). Shauna, however, displays a disregard for the idea of believing in the wilderness the whole time. She even says that she didn’t choose to stay in the wilderness for “it”. She displays a remarkable amount of disgust for the other girl’s belief in the wilderness, as we see when she writes in her journal in season 3.

Yet, despite this clear and obvious lack of real belief, Shauna uses religion as a tool during her reign. She makes a costume for herself (the antler queen costume), which was unique among the antler queen getups. Shauna’s was obviously a symbol of power and status, unlike Lottie (who made hers as a costume for a party) and Natalie (hers was made for her by the others for the trial). Also, Shauna is very quick to lean into Lottie’s visions and spirituality the second she realizes they can be used for control, leaning into the hunt, basically encouraging the use of the religion despite not believing, because she recognizes that it’s a tool of control, which she wants

Because that is what Shauna wants. For months, she nursed bitterness and hatred that she was not chosen as leader and instead that Natalie was made leader. She wants that power, she wants that control. She manipulates the jury for ben’s trial by force, she comes after nat after she killed ben, what shauna wants is CONTROL. It’s again, a very marked difference from lottie and natalie, who both never wanted to be queen and were instead appointed because it’s what the group needed. This is what cult leaders do!! They want power and they use their power to control people! Textbook cult leader

Shauna also runs the group with an iron fist. Dissenters are punished and harassed (natalie) and she’s quick to make an us vs them mindset that gets people killed. Hell, her first act as leader is to make natalie butcher ben, the clearest punishment there is, and obviously one that she knows firsthand is terrible and probably worse than any other punishment she could have dished out. She takes joy in seeing this happen, and she enjoys settling personal scores (mari). She uses the gun as backup and seems to have implemented regular checks to ensure obedience (nat’s bed check). All of that is very in line with a cult leader, who doesn’t want dissent because everything falls apart if dissent is allowed. Cults run on fear and manipulation

I think genuinely the only aspect of a cult leader that shauna was missing (and why her reign failed so badly) was lack of charisma. Its an important factor of a cult leader, and shauna reallyyyyy doesn’t seem to use it in her reign very well. She ruled mainly on fear. Its very interesting and honestly if they had managed to make her a charismatic cult leader s3 would have been wayyy better
