Ruben was delighted by how much fun he was having at the face painting booth. He could finally put his skills to use. He could do cats or dogs or even chickens and hearts, and so on, and of course he could make them have the face of an animal! He was in uniform only to help encourage relations with Edgewater PDD. "Hi, I'm Officer Ruben," he greeted the adult like he would a child, too. "What magic can I paint for you, today?"
Maxwell
Maxwell couldn't help but find the scene in front of him absolutely adorable. Sure, he never really had the thought of being a dad, but seeing Ruben's naturalness with a child was enough to put a sweet grin on his face. "You really are great with kids and such, aren't you?" He teased playfully as he leaned up against one of the trees.

Perking up at the sound of a now familiar voice, Ruben glanced over before turning back to mother and child who were picking something from his art board. "Do you know how many cousins I have that are younger than me?" he asked with a lift of question in his brow. "The answer is two and they're both spoiled an unbelievable amount." He grinned when the girl said she wanted a flower on her cheek. Ruby asked what color, the answer of course being, "Blue!" Ruben gasped. "That's my favorite color, too!" he said as he got his paints ready and asked the child her name and if she had friends who would see her blue flower. "Oh yeah?" Ruben replied when she nodded big. "Well, I think I should give my friend a flower on his face, too. What do you think? He's right over there," Ruben said as he pointed out Maxwell.October 1, 2020
Maxwell
"Hey, it's cute! I mean, The fact that you're so good with kids definitely gives you a pretty big attractiveness point." He hummed, just silently watching the two. It reminded him that he seriously needed to hang out with his younger family before time runs and they become angsty teenagers who hate him. Chuckling when the girl nodded at the question, he moved to sit next to the girl, trying his best not to let his bad knee give out on him and embarrass himself by falling. "That might actually be kinda cute! The flower idea, of course!"
I don't need to feel love, I just wanna feel something
If it's never enough, at least it's better than nothing
After everyone I've lost and every kiss I wasted
I don't, I don't need to feel love
Just wanna feel something

Ruben was having a fine evening. He'd gotten in a few dances and had a couple drinks, and he was relaxed. Then, as he was walking outside for some air, he clipped shoulders with another man and turned to see Easton Beckett and tipped his chin up instead of down to apologize. "My fault," he said and continued outside without another thought about the incident.
EASTON
The glass in his hand, whiskey neat - the second for the night, was knocked askew when someone checked his shoulder. A grown crossed Easton's face paired with a groan as he reached for a napkin, glaring daggers at the person who continued on there way. "Pay better attention next time."

Ruben was enjoying the ceremony and had promised his co-worker he would go stag, too, so he was looking for Sierra at the reception when his eyes met vibrant blue ones making his stomach do a little flip. "Hey -- I mean, hello," Ruben fumbled through words and cursed himself because those kind of eyes were the only ones that did him in. You should see him around Miles. "You wanna dance?" he asked the stranger and held his hand out to the dance floor without looking away from the man's face. It was a line dancing song, this should be an easy sell, right?

he thought being here would be different. That he would feel different, but he didn’t. Claims were a huge deal, he’d be a liar if he said they weren’t. But this was different. He didn’t even know the people going through a claim, yet, he had showed up anyway. Being with Landon had been the best part of the day, but they had broken apart, if only temporarily. He didn’t expect expect someone to ask him to dance, though. For a moment, Alastair had to admit he was caught off guard but he couldn’t help but nod. “ sure. “ he offered, taking the others hand. He was a dancer, after all. Turning down such a thing seemed like a bad idea. Especially where he was concerned. “ got a name? “ he asked the other, pulling him out to the center of the room.

Ruben was close to calling it a night at the ceremony. He barely knew anyone there and was really there to stop any fights, though he'd managed to almost cause one himself. He'd had one drink and that was a few hours ago. Still, he was planning to walk home and come back for his truck in the morning. He was looking for Sierra to say his goodbyes when he clipped the shoulder of another man and he winced this time. "Sorry," he said as he turned around and expected another trading of words. "I didn't mean anything by it. I just don't yield when I walk. Always was what I was taught and now I'm a Sentinel and--- Wow." Ruben stopped abruptly. "You're really pretty," he said before he could stop himself. "Sorry, I mean, hello, I'm Ruben," he offered and put out his hand to the other man.
Maxwell
Maxwell was just trying to get back home, not really wanting to be there in the first place. The only person he was there for was Kita. He'd made sure to tell Stella goodbye and wish her luck with everything before leaving. He wasn't looking where he was going when he felt the other clip his shoulder, immediately turning to face him. "I'm sorry," he spoke up at the same time. "You're fine, don't worry! You didn't cause any harm or anything, so..." When the other stopped and spoke again, he could feel his face heat up. 'Oh, thank you! It's nice to meet you, Ruben. I'm Maxwell, but please, call me Max." Carefully, he took the other's hand into his own, giving it a firm, yet gentle shake. ;(edited)
Ruben Ruiz
Ruben nodded and shook the other man, Max's hand and kept it firm but not too firm. "It's great to meet you, Max. Um, actually I was just leaving. Have to work in the morning, like I said I'm a Sentinel. But if I could stay, I would." Ruben didn't know where these words were coming from, but he just felt compelled. Maybe, he was starting to get past his crush on Miles that entailed the inability to speak. "Look, this is going to be weird, but do you ever go to the Rammer Jammer?"
Maxwell
"Oh that's.... Actually really cool! My dad was a Sentinel when I was younger! I wanted to become one but..." He let his free hand tap at his knee as gently as possible. "I accidentally fractured it running after a dog as a teenager. Can't really stand for long periods of time without having to sit down or something." Maxwell shrugged his shoulders. Besides, maybe being a dog groomer was better for him in the long run. "It's not weird at all. But yeah, I've been going to the Rammer Jammer for a while, ever since I got here, really."
Ruben Ruiz
Made an expression of compassion. "I'm sorry to hear that happened. Definitely can see my knees going bad some day, though." He smiled when Max said asking about a random bar in town wasn't weird. "I mean, I'm sorry to keep you and I didn't even think to ask if you were from out of town, but we should meet up there sometime. I mean, if you want to. I can regale you with boring stories of the job and you can tell me about... whatever it is you do." He chuckled. "Mind if I get your number? Might be easier if we step outside and you don't have to yell it at me? That is, if you're willing. I know I'm being pushy, but you are really fantastic looking and I'd like to see you again for more than me trying to flirt."
Maxwell
"Oh, no it's okay! Really! I mean, I should probably get it fixed, but trying to get the money to do that is an absolute hassle. I'm always breaking into that fund for bills and rent and the like..." He grinned, finding how the other seemed to ramble on and on absolutely adorable. "You're totally fine, but I would absolutely love that! I always love hearing stories from peoples' lives! I personally just work as a dog groomer, so that... That has some stories." He snorted, giving a nod. "I don't mind at all. You're not being pushy, it's actually kind of cute how you're rambling! Here... Lemme see your phone, I'll type my number in, and you can send me a text so you know the number I gave you isn't fake."September 13, 2020

Ruben had to hold back from becoming Ruby The Want To Help Everyone puppy that he'd always been growing up when he used to beg his grandparents to pay for things for others. He just nodded, felt a flush in his cheeks and shook his head. "Hey, dog grooming is no easy job if it's anything like sheering sheep," Ruben agreed and pulled out his personal phone to punch in the passcode, get it to the keypad screen, and hand it over. He smiled and shook his head at himself. "I'm not usually this wordy," he admitted and bit the inside of his lip as he watch Max type.
Maxwell
The more Maxwell was around Ruben, the more he found him to be the most precious guy he'd ever met. "It's really not, and some of the dogs... Well.... They're not as social as others are. And by that, I mean I've been bit so many times by some of them." He never could really blame them. He knew it wasn't really the fault of the pup, but the owner instead for not socializing them as much as possible. Carefully, he took the phone, typing in his number before typing in 'Maxwell (Rammer Jammer Guy)' for his name, handing it right back to him. "It's totally fine! I think it's kinda cute when people get wordy or shy around me."
Ruben sat in Perk Up with his partner enjoying some coffee before they went on their morning patrol. He was relaxed and ready for the day. Then, Miles Carver walked in and the first thing Ruben noticed was the black eye, and he was standing up before he could stop himself and think through what he was doing. Normally, Ruben didn’t let his emotions push his reactions to head but this was Miles and Ruben was worried beyond belief.
Swallowing thickly, Ruben watched as Miles went to the counter, presumably to order and for the first time in the long time of Ruben having his silent crush on Miles, Ruben spoke. “Let me get that, Miles,” he said as he approached and eyed the other man with concern as he pulled out his wallet to pay. “You involved in the scuffle at The Outlaw last night? They said a pretty man got punched trying to break it up.” Ruben paused. “Sorry, I just went all sentinel there, but really, can I get you some ice, too?”
bloodstone: how my muse sees themselves as part of the world at large
Ruben sees himself as good, honest person, and he tries to do right by people, especially as a member of the Peace Defense Department. He knows he wasn’t born into the job, but he does make a point to never reach for his gun or even a taser. He just doesn’t use them. Deadly force should not be called for in any situation if he can talk a person down. The gun is for him to disable an assailant if need be and it’s the last choice on his list.
quartz: how my muse thinks other people see them
Ruben thinks the world sees him as the bad guy and a bad cop just because he wears the uniform, and most of the time he agrees that there is need for drastic change in police forces. So, he doesn’t blink when people are verbally against his job. He’ll do whatever he can to make them believe that there can be some change that starts with him.

At their home, the Ruiz family had a closet under the main staircase. Once Ruby got into Harry Potter, he was often found sitting in the closet with a flashlight learning to read. Not wanting to discourage him entirely, his parents built Ruby a bench inside the closet and removed the shoes and coats so that he could use the closet to read. The only stipulation was that he keep the door cracked and the light on so they knew he was in there. Ruby didn’t always follow the rules but he was a child and he tried. All was well until one day he got excited after school and took his new copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix into his “cupboard” along with his cloak and wand, and flashlight that he pretended the wand was lighting. He fell asleep on the bench and his parents kept calling for him to come downstairs for dinner. Ruby didn’t come and his mother asked his sister to check for Ruby in the closet. His sister was embarrassed because her teenage friends were there and she told their mother that he wasn’t in the closet without actually checking. When Ruby came walking out of the closet two hours later, the PDD was at the house and reading to make a lost child alert. His sister ran to her room, Ruby asked about dinner, and his parents did a lot of apologizing.
