could do a tutorial on how to do the irasutoya style? um.. a very VERY while ago I saw your keyframes irasutoya post and I wanted to know how you did it so
How To Make Custom Character Irasutoya!
Things you’ll need:
- An original Irasutoya image that you will use as a base
- A pen with bumpy edges
- An image of grainy/paper texture
- A digital drawing program
One you have all of these, you’re ready to go!
This is the image I will be using:
This is the kind of brush you want to use:
This brush is apart of Procreates default brush library, it is under the “inking” section. However, any brush with similarly bumpy edges will do. This is how we will achieve that uneven look that the edges of Irasutoya images have.
Here is the paper texture image that I’m using:
OKAY SO LETS GET TO IT!
I’m gonna turn Waterboy from Dispatch into the Irasutoya. Make sure you have a reference image you like so that you can colour pick to make the colours of the final drawing look accurate!
Lower the opacity of the image you want to use and make a new layer:
I like to start with the hair as it tends to sit on top of most of the feature: eyes face clothes etc. Basically I’m just looking at the ref image and trying to imitate the shape of Waterboy’s hair. This requires you to ignore the hair shape of the original drawing ofc.
One thing to note when drawing Irasutoya hair is that the hair is often rounded at the edges, rather than pointy. You can see that the ends of the locks of hair are round rather than spiky:
The hair of Irasutoya characters tends to have these dark vertical lines on them, so with a slightly darker colour, draw some thick lines onto the hair.
Okay so that’s the hair, which in general is the most unique part of drawing these. There is one thing to note when drawing everything else though.
If you just trace over with one colour, you can quickly lose the clarity of the image:
Where’d his hand go!? We need to make sure that we follow the outlines of the original image as well. Irasutoya use darker colours to outline parts of the image to give clarity, such as with the hand:
The easiest way to do this is colour pick the base colour, then lower the opacity of the layer you’re working on, and trace over the darker outline! You can see I did this for the hand as well as for the eyes and nose.
Final Touches:
I’ve gone and drawn the rest of the image, free-handing any parts of Waterboy’s outfit that are not suggested by the original image. One thing to note is the dark outline of his blue cuff. That isn’t in the original image, but you should try to add your own outlines to add clarity to your drawing!
Irasutoya images have a grainy texture to them. To achieve this, I overlay a paper texture on the image.
Merge all the layers for your image and then make a clipping mask where you will insert your paper texture. You can choose to either lower the opacity or use the effects provided. I used the divide effect provided by Procreate to get the final product!
And there you have it!
Doesn’t he look cute!!!! If you try this out tag me I wanna see who you’re making into these lol...
