Small mc rant because I love her but hate the writers sometimes
So I'm on my reread of episode 12 and was reminded of a pattern that occurs with the mc and tasks. I really despise this particular thing that the writers can't seem to really let go of when it comes to that main story. I feel like it's not really an intentional thing that the writers are doing, but more of a bias that's gone unchecked. I love the mc (she's in my top 6), but I hate how the writers treat her when it comes to the main story. This weird pattern of the mc not actually being able to do much, or help out even on basic things like cleaning up or fetching something without one of the ghouls being there, or doing it for her is quite frustrating. Once you notice it, you can't stop seeing it everywhere. You know she gets told to do something, but oh no, something goes somewhat wrong, and then she stops helping untill a ghoul come around and starts doing it. Or another sinario that pops up a lot is two ghouls will be having a disagreement, and while she will mentally acknowledge that she should step in, the writers won't actually let her, and instead will have one of the ghouls do it. Even when it would make more sense for the mc to do it, they just won't let her. They won't even let her figure out basic and obvious things (ex, the dealer anomaly erasing the memories from the date they offer up). A ghoul always has to be the one to explain it and figure it out. I can really only think of 2, maybe 3 occasions where mc is actually allowed to take initiative in a way. And even then, a ghoul always steps in and takes over, but whatever, at least she got to do something. I get the ghouls are really the selling point, and she's just the reader insert... but she can't even get blankets on her own without haru stepping in and grabbing them for her, really?
This is why I can't be upset at people for not like the mc, because she is written in a way that's overly helpless a lot more than I'd care to admit. It's kind of to an extent that I have to wonder if there's a bit of misogyny happening in the writer's room. I dunno maybe I'm reading a bit too much into things. It would be nice to see her actually be an inspector as the story goes on, and she gets a bit more used to this world she's been thrust in.
Ok, to clarify a couple of things because I know they'll be brought up. There are times when she is allowed to help out (like with feeding haru and Peekaboo in episode 12), but it's rarely on screen and more so just gets mentioned. I'm also not referring to anything that happened in the dionysia episode. Because all that was a very clear and intentional writing decision for her to be in the dark and the students to be hiding stuff. There are very obvious places and characters where it's a clear and good writing choice. I'm only talking about when it gets to be too much and for stuff it really didn't need to be.
You're right in that it could be just the MC being a self-insert for players, but it also seems like they want to give her a personality. I've seen otome MCs (not quite the same as Tokyo Debunker which is a joseimuke, but it's similar) who are still self-insert, but have an established trait about them.
There can be different types of self-insert MCs, with one of them being "blank sheet" MCs. In Tokyo Debunker's case, it's hard to distinguish whether or not they want the MC to be a blank sheet self-insert OR a self-insert who has some sort of personality.
In my opinion, it might lean more to being intentional with this writing choice because as you've said, the selling point of this game are the ghouls. But there are a few times where she was allowed to do and think for herself, like in that Frostheim ball episode, where she took a picture of where the body was and sent it to Jin, thereby helped solve the entire case. Granted, the person figuring it out was Jin, but she still did something at least.
I think this is especially prominent in the episodes with the Lockburn Castle, where, if I recall correctly, it was most of her team trying to figure out the mystery of Robin's death, rather than the MC herself. It seems ridiculous when you think about it. The MC didn't even help much in trying to solve the riddle when it was her curse involved. It's been told from the start that the spider could (possibly) tell them where the Kyklos might've been. Even if it was a lie, it was the only lead they had and the MC was close to her curse's deadline. There likely were a few moments where the MC contributed to the discussion, I'm sure, but it's nothing big and significant as Haru, Haku and Rui having theories of their own where they had a whole plan laid out.
I know some people might find it hard to self-insert in a character who isn't a blank sheet, but I don't mind if the MC has more personality than what was already shown. It really makes it feel more immersive.

Every single one of them outfreaks shion by default by virtue of being chill with shion, who is so visibly unwell. Its like in the prologue when I instantly called Haku out on being not normal cuz no normal person would talk to taiga all normal like that
I think all of them are shitty on account of allowing Shion's deranged behaviour towards everyone and the MC. SURE, you can say Shion's not quite mentally sane (obviously), but that's still no excuse to act like a menace to society.

Shion is just (possibly) a crazier version of Taiga, and Mio is Sho but as a craftsman.
But then again, Elias might be different though. At least from what the game has shown him.

Spoilers for episode 24. A short, sort-of-an-analysis on Ren and Towa.
A follow-up post about these two answers I received in my Tokyo Debunker survey about episode 24 in response to the question: "Least memorable and/or disliked moments of episode 24."
Specifically, I'm referring to the Jabberwock thing.
My personal opinion is that Ren feels pressured to do good and whatnot by Haru always saying he believes in him. He knows he's not that kind of person and can't live up to Haru's high expectations of him, which is why he lashed out. (This is something I had already talked about in my other post where I spoke about my overall opinions of episode 24.) It can be seen in the opening cutscene where he also lashed out at the MC, with him even questioning himself why he was doing this anyway.
You can also see it when you maxed out his Limit Break, where he says, "Tch. Even if you get your hopes up, it’s obvious you’ll just get bored of me soon anyway." (たくっ、期待されたところで、どうせすぐ飽きられんの目に見えてますけどね)
"期待" (kitai) being expectations.
I don't have much else to say, 'cause I'm not the kind of fan who analyzes characters to a deeper extend than this... but it does seem like he kinda has an issue with expectations? I could be very wrong though.
As for Towa, I think we have to understand his side a little. Maybe he was abandoned at some point and Haru is one of the only people he is very emotionally attached to. You can see it in his max level line where he says, "Is it okay now? I won’t become all alone, will I?" (もういいの？これで俺、ひとりぼっちにならない？)
There's the implication that he's not human, but then, you might ask, why isn't he in Obscuary if that's the case? Well, I don't have an answer, so this is just one theory. He is one of the only other ghouls to not have their blood type listed. The other two being Edward and Lyca.
And it's also sort of implied that he used to look down on humans or something similar, but somehow, I guess he fell in love with humans? In his max Limit Break line, he said, "Why are humans so foolish, ridiculous, pitiful and lovable?" (人間てどうしてこんなに愚かで滑稽で哀れで愛しいんだろうね)
A more direct translation is, "Why is it that humans are this foolish, this ridiculous, this pitiful, and this lovable, I wonder" so it's more thoughtful than just asking a question.
But even ignoring this, Edward seems to imply the same as well. I can't think of the specific scene, but it's probably either the episode where they met in the Obscuary forest (episode 6) or near the tree that Towa hangs out at (episode 10).
I don't have theories about this, but I would wait and see Towa's deal first before judging too quickly. I think he has a pretty good reason (even if unreasonable from a logical perspective) why he's upset at Haru.

Yeah, it's largely what I would expect. Personally, I enjoyed it despite its flaws, but a couple of them were too glaring to ignore. A big example is how they handled the MC's curse.
Q2. Was the finale better than you expected?

I suppose I never had any expectations to given with. Not huge ones, at least, but I thought they would wrap up some loose ends on previous mysteries, but all they did was dump more questions on us and make it even more vague. While next episode/season is likely going to be the prophecy coming true, everything else like the fourth-years, the Clash and such are still shrouded in mystery. Not to mention it's only 30 chapters for a supposed finale to a season.

Honestly, yeah. They're really trying to play it up as "mysteries" but too much of it can hurt.
Zenji definitely doesn't hate Jiro, but Jiro, on the other hand, seems to be on the notion that he doesn't have a brother. His reactions to Zenji being indirectly mentioned in episodes 9 (the MC saying "teamwork makes the dream work" or something) and 17 (Rui putting up that day's date which was Zenji's birthday) implies that he holds some animosity for him. We'll see how that goes, I guess.

Mhm, I definitely agree with this one.
The ghouls' interactions with one another and their interactions with the MC were my favourite moments from this episode.
No, Jiro telling Edward to disrobe is one thing, but Edward actually going to do so in public is something else lol. Then again, I wouldn't have expected anything else from this perverted vampire.
Not a big fan of Kaito, but I'm not surprised to see a lot of mentions of him here.

But you are right in that Alan's past was one of the biggest mystery, so I'm happy we got that (somewhat) solved before everything went to shit lol.
I hadn't thought about it until some of you mentioned it, but yeah, the Gala was hyped up since episode four (courtesy of Ritsu), but it ended up being just a nothingburger. That video of the houses getting chosen could've been more extravagant. In real time, I doubt the event even lasted 30 minutes. Realistically, what's the point of the Institution buying the attires and having the students wear them if they're not even going to have photoshoots or something?
I would like to address the Jabberwock issue too... but this section will be dragged out for too long, so I'll make a separate post of it later.
Again, unsurprisingly, Kaito's death.

While I like the time loop theory and find it interesting, I have seen people say it feels like a cop-out, and the ghouls' development would mean nothing. I stopped liking the theory after seeing this lol. And yeah, they have revived Dante, so surely they'll find a way? Then again, Zenji might've already been revived by now so who knows...

I hope the choices they make to develop and extend the story aren't too forced. During season 1, we got two origins of Ghouls (Alan and Kaito). If every season follows two origins of Ghouls, I can't imagine how long this story will be! Hopefully it will still be fun to follow xD
I really loved the entire first season! we can definitely see how each house has grown from the beginning!! I do hope we can get a jinmc reconciliation scene, or even just everyone in one huge interhouse mission to get back Kaito yk it’s def a far reach but if episode 24 can happen anything can

Spoilers for episode 24. My opinions on majority of the episode.
Well, that was a clusterfuck of an episode.
There were parts where I was disappointed/miffed about and parts where I enjoyed. I'm going over with the parts I disliked first, the parts I liked, and miscellaneous.
Please note that all of these are my opinions, and that I still enjoyed this episode regardless of my complaints. If you enjoyed it too, then good for you! Don't let someone else's opinions affect your own experience of it.
1. I'm tired of the "giving more questions and no answers" thing. I get it; you wanna make it mysterious and whatnot, but there's two times where a person says something important, they just get cut off because wow, what a coincidence, huh? Or that they don't finish their sentences and elaborate more. It's none of the MC's business, but all this secrecy is too much. Not to mention that it was another cliffhanger, like I predicted.
2. Were Yuri and Jiro neglected again this episode? Didn't it feel like they had less screentime than the ghouls? Call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure they only appeared at the beginning and at the end. I suppose this isn't a big problem, since the main focus isn't on them, but Mortkranken really has been neglected these previous episodes. Especially Yuri.
3. I'm disappointed they didn't do much with Rui and the MC meeting again after two weeks. They didn't even talk to each other. All they said were each others' names and that's it. Really?
4. The curse being so easily resolved was anticlimactic. I thought there was going to be a bigger spectacle about it, especially considering it was our main goal from the very beginning. They made it out to be a big deal, with even the last episode where the MC did not go out for two weeks when they failed their only chance to capture the Kyklos. But it was really cured just like that. I was excited to see the curse taking effect, but the fact that the curse was so easily broken makes me feel nothing.
The monkey paw comes from the short horror story "The Monkey's Paw" where, likewise, grants three wishes. In the original story, it grants three wishes per person by in twisted and horrible ways. Mr. White, husband of Mrs. White and father of Herbert, wished for £200 as a joke, to pay off the remaining mortgage for his house. The next day, Herbert died from a horrific accident at work and the company came to compensate the family with £200. A week after the funeral, Mrs. White begged Mr. White to wish for their son to be alive again. Mr. White was hesitant, but gave in, and imagined their mutilated son as he made his wish. The same night, they heard a knock on their door. While Mrs. White struggled to open the locks on the door, Mr. White, in fear of seeing whatever it is outside, made his final wish. The knocking stopped and the door opened, finding there to be no one. Whatever wish Mr. White made and whatever was outside was made unknown.
In this episode, they changed it to only have a heavy price every third wish, but it really disappoints me that there really was no struggle or consequence for making a wish to cure a curse of an S CLASS ANOMALY. Unless the monkey paw is also an S Class anomaly, I'm less inclined to accept any excuses. And even if that was the case, that was way too underwhelming.
5. Maybe I'm just heartless about it, but I didn't really feel anything when they killed off Kaito. I did somewhat expect something was going to happen after that curse cured bullshit. I guess I also wasn't very attached to Kaito to begin with, but it feels like they're only doing it just for the shock value. I suppose it was necessary for Luca to lose his shit, but still.
6. This episode was again building up for the next episode/season. Not that this episode was bad, but we didn't even figure out anything besides that the demon arm wasn't even a demon arm. And we didn't even learn it ourselves. We learned it from Tohma and Jin. And that clocked figure? Are we only going to know more about it in the next episode? Why can't we have one episode where everything resolves naturally and peacefully without turning something else into a bigger mystery/deal?
Now onto parts I did enjoy. In chronological order:
1. Vagastrom appearing in the first chapter was wholly welcomed. I love seeing the Vagastrom boys. And Sho had his "soft eyes" when he saw Alan coming out of the train. Seeing the first-years care for Alan was really sweet.
2. That Rui and Lyca CG... Particularly Rui. He looks so good? So cute and pretty as always.
3. Haru and Romeo sympathizing with Rui repeating a year was sweet. Especially Romeo, as he doesn't come off as someone who cares, but he does. Just in his own special way. "Take your time," he said. Compared that to episode four where he was rushing Rui to make his drink. Granted, Romeo was super pissed at the time, but it's a nice thought.
4. Towa coming in unexpectedly to rip Edward's arm off... That's definitely one for the books lmao.
5. Leo taking pictures of the MC for his private collection because it's "funny"? Be for real, we all know you're doing it just because you want to lol. We also get a chance to "gross him out" with the third option, which, who DOESN'T want to choose that?
6. Leo and Kaito meeting each other was expected, but it went exactly what I'd expect. It was sort of funny seeing Leo continually to insult Kaito, Luca getting angry on his behalf, and the parents (Sho and Tohma) getting tired of the same shenanigans.
7. Alan sincerely apologizing to the MC even though he didn't need to... He's way too sweet on the MC.
8. The MC unintentionally pissing Romeo off about his knowledge of gemstones... I chose the third option the first time around, but his anger is actually more subdued if you choose the first and second options, which is really nice to see. Picking either options has him being kinder to the MC than they first met. And then he actually calmed down after she told him to keep his voice down.
9. Tohma speaking informally with Alan and him convincing the higher-ups to abolish the rule really shows that he cares.
10. Edward was NOT having it this episode. He nearly had his arm tore off, had fingers stuck into his mouth, and then had Lyca hauled him away like it's nothing lmao.
11. Jiro bringing up that the MC will eventually learn about gemstones being ingredients for some anomalous medicine, and Yuri trying to shush Jiro makes me think Yuri was trying to not bring up the MC's curse, since it'll remind her of what time she has left.
12. Yuri leaving the Gala (something he has been looking forward for a long time) to attend to Jiro was sweet of him to do. I mean, of course he would, since he's a doctor and all, but my point still stands. And then asking the MC to stand-in for him if Mortkranken does win. She has really grown on him.
13. Haku's voice when he said the MC can sit next to her. Just his voice. Very sensual.
14. Towa crying in the caves and Zenji trying to comfort him. Just like in their first meeting. This duo is underrated.
15. Ignoring the second option, when Subaru apologizes for failing to break her curse, her first and third options has her being more optimistic about her situation than before. Leo has really helped boost her confidence.
16. Everyone meeting up in the auditorium at the same spot (the MC probably didn't move much from where she was) was honestly kinda funny to think about. They were all just conveniently meeting up with the MC.
17. Kaito returning the money to Luca was really nice of him.
18. It's not as obvious as the other amazing voice actors (seeing as she doesn't appear/speak as much in the comic-styled cutscenes), but the MC's voice acting is also really good. I like the part where she was beginning to transform.
Miscellaneous.
1. Rui's sad reaction to Romeo, Haru and Lyca talking about not to worry what other people say? Bro? Maybe he's affected by what others say about him being non-human and a risk to be around. Which I wouldn't be surprised, because he's a very kind person.
2. That Towa and Edward becomes more sad when Towa realizes Haru will someday leave him... And also the part where Edward mentions his wish. It seemed to imply his wish goes against whatever it is relating to the MC, no?
3. Jiro thinking that he doesn't have a brother and getting attacks/angry whenever Zenji or the doll (that looks identical to the Kirisaki brothers) is mentioned, directly or indirectly or not, is really concerning. Makes me think about their situation as a whole.
4. I believe Dante isn't a bad person. Based on how he acts and Hyde's comments about his "bleeding heart," there must've been an accident or something we don't know yet regarding that mission with Alan's dad. He contrasts Hyde, whereas Hyde is outwardly friendly but is extremely shady, Dante comes across as more aloof, but does care about the students. Dante not ratting Alan out reinforces that belief.
5. I think Ren probably feels pressured whenever someone believes in him. He might think that he's not going to do anything meaningful at all or actually live up to their expectations, which is why he got so angry at Haru.
6. Honestly did not expect Haru's whole arm to be a prosthetic. Thought it was just his hand, or his arm to his elbow, but a whole arm is insane.
7. The campus is on fire and filled with anomalies, and that one Hotarubi girl is yelling for Subaru not to hit her? Get your priorities straight, like goddamn.
8. "Narcissa" is likely the person Edward has indirectly mentioned in his final affinity line.
9. If I had a nickel for every time the MC says "x wouldn't have happened if I never did y" whenever she goes through a particularly bad day, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
10. Some ghouls are talking as if the tragedy has happened before. Taiga implying the world's about to end, Yuri saying he saved the world from the tragedy "back then," and Elias saying that the profound tragedy could've been avoided if the MC knew the truth.
11. The final scene with the chancellor makes me think that, if the time loop theory is really true, maybe he knew this was bound to happen, but tried to stop it anyway and still failing?
12. Did Moby's voice actor changed? I wonder what happened.

Realistically, this episode is a 6.5 out of 10. The parts I mostly enjoyed was in the beginning, some subtle moments here and there and some bias from me. There were just too many important yet lacking instances to ignore. My main disappointment lies with how they handled the MC's curse, but it's still a too important plot point that they really fucked up in this episode.
I think that's most of what I wanted to say about this episode. I reread the entire episode again just to get everything properly and in order. Mainly just skimmed through it though, but yeah. That's about it.

By any chance, did you change your device's date to try and read the story early? If that's the case, open the app first before changing the dates. The episode should be available then. If you changed it before opening the app, it won't let you log in. Or... at the very least, that was the case for me in the beginning when I was getting all of the holiday voice lines from the ghouls, but as I'm testing it now, it lets me log in even if the dates are different. So this might not be the issue.
If not, then I'm not entirely sure. I did have an issue once where I couldn't log in, but I think I deleted and downloaded it back and that worked. Either that, or I restarted my device. I don't recommend the deleting and downloading method if you don't have the restore code saved.
