10 Things I’ve Learned From “Wonder” (Book and Film):
Treat people fairly. No matter how a person looks, thinks, or acts, they’re still a human being - just like you or me. They have feelings. They are valid. They are no less important than you are, so treat them equally.
Friendships are important. Having a single kind and understanding friend can make more of a difference than being surrounded by those phony “cool kids”.
Respect your parents. They give up anything and everything just so you can grow up into that wonderful person they know you can be. Tell your mum you love her. Let your dad know how grateful you are. And if you don’t have parents, let whoever raised you know just how much you appreciate all they’ve done.
Bullying is futile. They not only make other feel bad, but they also feel bad themselves. When you’re forced to choose between appearing “cool” by bullying someone or appearing “weak” by being kind, always choose kind. It will be beneficial in the long run.
Dream big. You never know where a simple idea or hope may lead you. If you want to write a best-selling novel, do it! If you want to be a world-famous actor, go for it! No dream is too big or impossible - you’ve just gotta have faith.
Never give up. Even in the toughest times, you should never give in simply because things got difficult. Stand up for yourself, or don’t be afraid ask for help. You’ll get through this with a little faith and determination.
There will always be someone who loves you. Be it a parent, a grandparent, or a best friend, someone out there will love you unconditionally. Remember that you (yes, you, the person reading this) are somebody’s favourite - and nothing will ever change that.
Be kind. This is a simple fundamental rule in our world. Be kind to others, even when they aren’t necessarily kind to you. Kindness can be infectious, so you never know - your benevolent act may rub off on someone, inspiring them to become a better person and do the same.
Don’t be afraid to cry. Crying isn’t something to be ashamed of - it’s a natural part of life. A lot of tears were shed throughout the film, similarly to the copious amounts of tears that are shed all over the world. Just reach out for comfort; someone will always be willing to oblige.
You are special. There is no one else in this entire universe that is exactly like you. No one has your smile, your laugh, your walk, your voice, or even your kind heart. Just know you are unique - a total individual - with amazing qualities that will make our world a more beautiful place to be.
You can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.
