THROWBACK THURSDAY! Before his directing the feature narrative “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” Academy Award Nominee Behn Zeitlin directed the short film “Glory at Sea.” The short film was among the official selection at the 2008 Woodstock Film Festival where it won the Diane Seligman Award for Best Short.

Review: This is Benh Zeitlin’s original ode to the shattered bayous of New Orleans. The short took a total of 6 months to shoot, most of that time spent in a junk raft on open water (the Coast Guard reportedly said, “This is not a boat, this is the least seaworthy vessel I’ve ever seen floating”). Glory At Sea sees members of the Louisiana community come together, as a man thought lost to a storm washes onto the shore. They begin constructing a raft, so that he may search for his girlfriend at the bottom of the sea. The scene of waterlogged loved ones floating together, wrapped around seaweed is one of the most evocative images. Zeitlin and Court 13 have created a short explicitly designed to move audiences with every detail, from the shots to the score. Emotional highs and lows come at a staggering speed, but the short requires such a pace in order to tell its grandiose myth of an Orphic quest in post-Katrina New Orleans.
