Pairing: Draco Malfoy x Reader

Summary: After the kiss, Reader and Draco fall into their normal rhythm. Nothing has changed, or at least that’s what they keep telling themselves. But something’s shifted, and it’s noticeable enough to be picked up on…

Professor Binns had to be the most boring teacher at Hogwarts. His voice droning on and on about things no one cared about, I’m not even sure he was actually talking about a class topic anymore. I stared across the room blankly, only being shaken out of my state when Pansy elbowed me.

“Oi, why are you staring at Draco?” She asked, no longer bored since she discovered the accidental subject of my gaze.

I looked across the room once more, Draco looking right back at me. He seemed more alert than I was. His gaze seemed intentionally focused on me, unlike my own.

“I’m not. I just zoned out. Binns’ voice is putting me to sleep.” I snapped my eyes back to Pansy.

“You could use it. I love you, but the bags under your eyes could hold my entire summer wardrobe. Have you not been sleeping?” She asked.

“No. Just stress, I guess.” I said.

The truth was I hadn’t been sleeping. Every time I closed my eyes, all I could see was the moment Draco kissed me. How tender he was. How gentle, yet commanding. How it almost seemed like he meant it.

I was a natural, he said. Didn’t even need the lessons. I thought he was joking, with the way he looked at me. But a second later, the look of adoration and contentment was gone.

He sighed, stood up, moved over to his desk, and muttered something about having homework to do. I had pressed my fingertips to my lips, and stared wide eyed at the back of his head before slipping out quietly.

It was easy, pretending it had never happened. After all, it didn’t mean anything, it was just a practice kiss to ease the nerves for when the time was right. When the person was right.

Draco seemed to agree, as he didn’t bring it up the next morning when we met in the common room to walk to breakfast. He rambled about normal things. How he forgot to tell me that Potter was scoping them out at quidditch practice, or how he was stressed about the charms essay due next week.

Everything was normal.

Except it wasn’t. Not really.

Now, it had been three days since the kiss. I was meant to have a date with Cedric yesterday evening, but I called it off. I couldn’t possibly go on a date with someone, when I couldn’t even try to sleep without thinking of kissing Draco.

Pansy gave me a sympathetic look before going back to picking at her nail polish. I risked one more intentional look at Draco, who hadn’t look away since the last time I checked.

I huffed and stared at my desk. Could this lesson go any slower?

By the time class was over, I was ready to book it back to my dorm. I had free period for my last section, and I was wanted nothing more than to sit in the dark alone. I haphazardly threw my things into my book bag and was turning around to leave when Pansy stopped me.

“So what time do you want to head over to the boys dorm?” She tiled her head.

“What?” I asked, stopped in my tracks.

“For muggle movie night? Theo has been insisting we watch something in Italian, but he’s not getting a foreign film before I get my rom com.” She joked, but my stomach just dropped.

I completely forgot about movie night.

“Pans, I’m tired I really don’t know if I’m up for movie night.” It wasn’t a lie.

“Nope. A little rest and relaxation with our favorite bunch of boys is exactly what you need to feel better! I’m sure you could even convince Draco to give you a nice relaxing massage.” She sighed.

“I- uh- ugh. Just meet me in the dorm after your class and we can go then.” I stuttered out.

She put on her victory grin, and walked out of the room.

I quickly put my bag over my shoulder, and made for the door, but apparently I was just not allowed to leave this classroom because the next person who stopped me was none other than Draco himself.

“L/n! I’m beginning to think you don’t want to walk with me.” He said, strutting over to meet me where I stood, half way between my seat and the door.

I started for the door again with Draco in sync next to me.

“Now why would that be the case, Malfoy?” I joked.

“I don’t know, you girls and your mood swings.” He quipped, but my steps faltered just a fraction.

“My mood swings?” I muttered.

“What?” He asked.

“Nothing, nevermind.” I said.

“Okay… Well anyways, are you coming to my dorm? We have movie night later, so I figured we could prepare the snacks while our friends finish their class.” He said.

I thought about it. I really did. But then I thought about the last time I was in his dorm, and the hurt that followed when I left. I’m sure he wouldn’t try to kiss me again, but that hurt equally as bad.

“Nah, I’ll be at movie night, I told Pansy I would, but I’m also really tired. Haven’t been sleeping, so I’ll probably try to rest up some before we all get together.” I said, trying to act normal.

He tilted his head at me as we walked through the common room door. I pretended not to notice.

“Hey,” he said, and I stopped. “At first I was just joking, but seriously, are you avoiding me?”

I sighed.

“No I’m not avoiding you. Or I don’t mean to avoid you at least.” I couldn’t look him in the eyes.

We both stayed silent for a minute. The tension was becoming unbearable, and I had half a mind to walk away, but I guess he felt it too because he spoke first.

“Is this about the kiss?” He asked, quietly.

“What else would it be about?” I asked, finally giving up any resistance left at having this conversation.

“Nothing has to change between us, Y/n. I feel the same way about you as I did before.” He said.

My heart sank.

“I see.” I whispered.

“What? What is it? Will you talk to me?” He asked.

“There’s nothing to say. You made it perfectly clear that it wasn’t enjoyable for you.” I responded.

“What are you talking about? I told you that you were great.” His voice was rising now.

“Oh, forgive me for getting mixed signals, when you stood up out of no where, and basically told me to fuck off!” I argued.

I couldn’t believe the audacity of this man. To offer to kiss me, then make it great, then ignore me while I’m still sitting there, then act like I’m the crazy one for not being able to pretend it didn’t happen? Who does he think he is?

His mouth opened and closed like a fish. I knew the conversation was over. Draco was rarely ever rendered speechless.

“I’ll see you at movie night.” I said, walking to my dorm.

I didn’t lie. The goal really was to get some rest until movie night. I couldn’t avoid him forever, and I didn’t want to miss out on seeing our friends just because Draco is a git.

I napped for a couple of hours, finally able to get some much needed rest. I woke up when Pansy opened the door to our dorm.

“You’re not gonna believe this!” She said, as I stretched and rolled over to face her.

“What happened?” I asked, blinking the sleep out of my eyes.

“Draco is refusing to come to movie night!” She practically yelled.

“Are you serious?” I asked.

Now I was getting angry. If I could shove my feelings aside for the group when I was getting my heart broken, what right did he have to act like he was the victim?

“Something about not sleeping. Same as you now that I think about it.” She arched a perfect plucked eyebrow.

I groaned.

“Y/n, what aren’t you telling me?” She asked slowly, but it came off more like a demand.

“We… May have kissed.” I said quietly.

“What!” She may as well have screeched the word out.

“You had your first kiss? With Draco? And you didn’t even think to tell me about it?” She acted as if I had actually stabbed her in the back with a dull blade.

“We had an unspoken agreement not to talk about it!” I tried to defend myself.

“Still! I’m your best friend!” She said.

“I know. But now things are complicated. I like him. I didn’t know until we kissed, but I think I’ve liked him for a while now.” I confessed.

“Did you tell him?” She asked.

“No. We got into it earlier and he said, and I quote, ‘I feel the same way about you as I did before.’ And now l don’t know what to do.” I pinched the bridge of my nose.

“Honey, I know you don’t want to hear this, but I think you need to be honest with him.” She said quietly.

“And say what? ‘Hey, we kissed and things have been awkward and I think I’m in love with you but you won’t-” I didn’t get to finish that sentence because Pansy gasped and covered her mouth with both hands.

“You think you’re in love with him?” She whispered.

My eyes widened and my throat dried up.

“I- I don’t- Well…” I trailed off.

I flipped over onto my stomach and groaned into my pillow. Why did feelings have to be so complicated?

“Y/n, now you really have to tell him.”

“I know.” I grumbled, still into my pillow.

“Go! Now! Before movie night! And if you two aren’t a couple by the time Mattheo shows up with the popcorn, I’ll hex him into oblivion.” She said, pulling me out of bed by my legs.

I fixed my bed head and made my way over to the boys dorms, giving a gentle knock to his door. Part of me hoped he wouldn’t hear it, but once again, fate had other plans.

The door opened just a fraction, and I saw a slight shocked expression through the crack. He hesitated a moment before finally opening the door.

“Come in.” Was all he said.

My heart dropped into my stomach, but it returned to its rightful place just as quickly. He was going to hear what I had to say.

“Listen, I know you already said that the kiss didn’t change your feelings, but they changed mine, and while I was ranting to Pansy-”

“You told Pansy?” He interrupted.

“Yes, I may have let it slip that I might, maybe, be in love with you, and I didn’t know it until that very moment-”

“Y/n.”

“-and I know you don’t feel the same, you made that perfectly clear, but if I have to come to movie night with a broken heart, then damn it, so do you-”

“Y/n-”

“-because you don’t get to mess up the dynamic of the whole group just because you feel guilty for upsetting me, if I can be mature about it, then so can you!” I gasped, finally taking in a breath of air.

“Are you done?” He cocked an eyebrow and smirked.

I nodded once, waiting to hear what bullshit he was going to say now.

“I said that my feelings stayed the same because I have loved you since third year when you brought me chocolate frogs after that awful Hippogriff almost killed me.”

Oh.

Oh.

Well that definitely changes things.

“I- You- What?” Was all I could muster.

“So I’m sorry for being a complete bonehead, through and through. I thought you didn’t feel the same, and I tried to act normal, but when I realized I hurt you earlier, I couldn’t bear to face you again.”

“So… the feeling is mutual?” I asked, stepping closer.

“Very much so, love.” He reached his hands out, placing them on my waist and holding eye contact.

He leaned in, and this time the kiss was everything I’d heard other girls talk about. It felt like fireworks were going off in my stomach, and I felt dizzy in the best possible way.

He walked backwards to his bed and I walked with him, straddling his lap when he sat down on the edge. I ran my hands through his hair, and his hands were tracing the sides of my ribcage down to my hips, where he would occasionally squeeze.

I finally pulled back for air and huffed out a laugh.

“Damn.” He breathed. “That should have been our first kiss.”

I laughed and ran a hand through my own hair.

“Oh, bloody hell! We are late for movie night!” I said smoothing down my skirt and stepping back, while Draco attempted to fix his hair.

We rushed out of his dorm, and made our way down to the couches. Pansy and the rest of the boys were down there already, bickering about which movie we were watching.

We snuck out way into our usual seats and acted like we had been there the whole time, but unfortunately Pansy was more observant than we would have liked because she stopped talking about her movie immediately, and pointed to the two of us.

She didn’t even have to say anything. I could feel my cheeks heating up, and Draco stiffened next to me.

“Yes! I knew it! I’m a genius!” She squealed while the boys looked at her like she had grown three heads.

“See,” Draco muttered. “I was shocked you had told Pansy because I knew she would react just like that.”

Summary: During the Dusk Battle, Reader uses her powers too much and gets wiped out. Ethan sends her to the sidelines, and Rory is there to take care of her.

A/N: This was loosely inspired by something I wrote on Wattpad back in the day. Is this fandom even alive anymore?

You tried.

You really did, but your poor body could only take so much. Stunning spells take so much energy, and you fought long and hard in that damn movie theater. Jesse had seen you. Of course he had, but he hadn't bothered to come and get you himself. He sent minion after minion to retrieve you.

By the fifth vampire you had warded off with your magic, you were exhausted, and as you made your way over to Ethan to let him know, you ran into another one.

"Ethan! Help, I can't!" You cried out as the vampire grabbed you by your hair and yanked you to the ground.

He ran over to you, and you realized Rory was in tow as well. Rory stood back a foot as Ethan slashed at the vampire with his dagger. You heaved, palms on the ground, barely even able to push yourself up off the floor before your elbows gave out. You braced for impact, but instead were met with Rory as he caught your arms and lifted you up.

"Ror, you gotta get her out of here. And please, lay off the humans." Ethan joked.

"I will, I promise." He said, hooking an arm under your knees to lift you up fully. "You think they make a patch for vampires?"

Ethan shook his head and laughed nervously, and Rory hissed at him before laughing.

"Gotcha." He said before speeding you out of the movie theater.

When you stopped, you noticed you were in the park across from the school. He set you down gently, holding his arms out to steady you when you swayed from the exhaustion and the speed at which you made it here.

"You okay?" He asked, hesitantly.

You sat down on a park bench. "I think so, just tired. God, I feel so useless." You huffed.

"What- How could you possibly feel useless? Did you not see the way you were disintegrating those evil freaks left and right? You didn't even have to touch them with your hands! It was wicked!" He rambled, and you breathed a laugh.

Well, when he put it like that...

"Be careful what you say Rory, you're one of those freaks too now." You joked.

He held a finger up. "No no, there is a difference, I am not evil." He clarified.

You leaned into him and took a deep breath, wrapping both of your arms around one of his in a sort of lopsided hug. You felt him tense under you, and then slowly relax.

"Thank you for being here, Rory. For being here for me, but also just for being one of us. And for not leaving me here by myself right now." You said quietly, as if every thought was drifting out of your mouth before you could even process what you were saying to him.

He just looked at you. Just for a second, before he pulled his arm out of your grasp, and wrapped it around you instead. He pulled you into him, and it felt good to just stay like that.

Just for a while.

I climbed up the stacks of countless piles of junk, scrambling behind Draco and Blaise, with my brother fighting his way up behind me.

“Gregory, come on! The flames are rising!”

Harry, Ron, and Hermione circled back around on their brooms. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The golden trio coming to save us? Who would’ve thought.

Draco and Blaise managed their way onto the brooms of our saviors, but Hermione wasn’t low enough when I reached to grab Greg’s hand.

She circled back around and grabbed on to one of my hands, while Gregory reached up to grab my other, and that’s when the pile we were climbing shifted.

Greg lost his footing, Hermione yanking me up onto her broom while my brother fell down.

Down.

Into his own fiendfyre.

Into a demise of his own making.

The air left my lungs as the life left his eyes. It left in the form of a cry. A sound of anguish so raw, I tasted blood in the back of my throat.

The heads of my friends and enemies alike, whipped around at the noise, but I couldn’t look at them. I couldn’t look away from the spot where he was mere seconds ago, now engulfed in flames.

And I couldn’t stop screaming.

Screaming.

Theo registered the sound before he was awake. It wasn’t uncommon to hear the devastating screams of his friends’ nightmares.

After the war, they were all orphans anyway. Parents either gone, or locked away in Azkaban so long they may as well be.

It only made sense that they all move in together. A manor always had too many bedrooms and not enough life. Something they desperately needed after being forced into the wrong side of a war.

But it wasn’t Mattheo’s brash curses that woke him up. Not Draco’s sharp yells followed by pacing. Not even Pansy’s shrill cries that made his chest feel hollow.

This scream came from the room adjacent to his own. The one he heard the least, but when he did it shook the whole house. Or at least he felt like it did.

He threw the duvet down off of him, disoriented but focused. His hands were clammy when he grabbed the door handle, a symptom of his own sleepless torment. He stumbled the four steps it took to get from his side of the hallway to hers and burst through the door.

My eyes opened, I scrambled into an upright position. My breathing matched my thoughts, unorganized and out of control.

I looked around, noticing Theo standing at my door like he had to make sure the Dark Lord himself wasn’t in the manor casting the Cruciatus curse on me.

He looked scared. Maybe startled was a better word. Like he wanted to hold me, but also like he was afraid to come any closer than the doorway.

I let out a wheeze and two coughs before I could muster out any words.

“I’m sorry,” I rasped. “It was just a nightmare.”

He looked at me. Almost through me, but not quite. Like he didn’t want to pry, but he already knew too much.

“It’s alright. I get them too.” He said.

He looked at me for a moment longer.

“Goodnight.” He said turning around.

“Wait- I… Will you stay with me?” I pleaded, my arm reaching out to him with a mind of its own.

He hesitated before turning to look at me again. Something in his eyes softened.

“Yes. Of course.” He said.

I scooted over, lifting up the covers.

While his bed had a traditional duvet, with silk sheets and a mountain of pillows, my bed had soft cotton sheets, two pillows, and a soft, fluffy blanket for a comforter.

It was simple compared to the old money lavishness of the manor, but it did the job. Soft and warm, but never hot. Never suffocating.

Once Theo was settled in, I laid back down, half of my back resting against his front. He sighed like the weight of me on his chest was lifting weight off his shoulders.

“Do you think we will ever be okay again?” I asked, my eyes focused on a piece of lint stuck in my blanket.

He toyed with a strand of my hair that was falling out of the loose braid I wore. Something I did regularly to keep the hair off my neck. It was cooler that way.

“I think so. We have each other. We have our whole lives ahead of us, and we get to decide who we are.” He brushed the strand back again, tucking it into my braid once more.

“Thank you,” I said. “For being here. For keeping me sane.”

“I’ll always be here. I’ll always stay with you.”

I sighed, turning around in exasperation. He just smiled that devious little grin of his.

“You don’t get it, Dray! Every time a guy gets close to kissing me, I chicken out! At this rate, I’m gonna be the only witch to graduate Hogwarts without snogging somebody.”

He stared at me with this look on his face, somewhere between a smirk of amusement, but also trying not to laugh.

“You could always practice with me?” He suggested.

My insides experienced an odd fluttering sensation that I noticed was becoming more frequent around Draco.

“Ha ha. Very funny.” I rolled my eyes, but he didn’t laugh.

“What’s the matter? Afraid you might like it?” He full on smirked this time.

“Yeah right, blondie, in your dreams.” I said turning around and pacing his dorm, again.

“I just don’t see what the big deal is, Y/n. If you’re not ready, you’re not ready. Don’t force yourself into a situation you’re not comfortable with.” He said, sincerely.

“I mean… I am comfortable with you… You’re my best friend.” I said, the last part being the only thing I could say with certainty.

He looked at me again, still silently, but this time I couldn’t tell what his face meant. I flopped down next to him on the side of the bed, dramatically, before sitting up and looking at him.

“Were you seriously offering? Or just pulling my leg.” I asked.

“I was seriously offering. I’d rather you be comfortable, than snog some sorry mug just to say you did.” He said.

“Aw Dray, that might be the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me.” I put my hands over my heart.

“Don’t ruin the moment,” he rolled his eyes. “Do you want to or not?”

“Let’s do it.” I wrung my hands together, and blew out a huff to calm my nerves.

“So… Where do I put my hands?” I asked. “And which way are you gonna tilt your head, because if we bash our heads together that would be embarrassing, and then I would realize this is such a stupid idea, and-”

“Y/n.”

I shut my mouth.

“Seriously, where do my hands go?” I asked.

He laughed, and took them in his own.

“Just relax. Here.” He said, placing my hands on his shoulders.

Were they always this firm?

“Are you absolutely sure you want to do this?” He asked.

I nodded.

“I need words, love. You only get one first kiss.” He said.

“Yes, Dray. I trust you.” I said.

He put his hands against my face, his thumbs brushing the plumpness of my cheeks. I looked into his eyes, the silver of them captivating, before closing my own.

I leaned in, not all the way, but enough to feel his breath on my lips. They brushed his for a second, just barely, and it made my breath hitch.

When we finally kissed, it was like nothing I had ever experienced before. Sure, I had heard other girls talk about it, and seen it in muggle movies, but none of that did this justice. He tasted like apple, and he smelled like leather and pine.

I never noticed that before.

I kissed him blindly, biting his lip in the process. Suddenly the taste of apple was replaced with the taste of something metallic.

“Woah.” He said pulling back slightly and wiping his lip.

He didn’t say anything for a brief moment, and my heart dropped. Of course I had messed this up so quickly. Why did either of us think this was a good idea?

“Dray, I’m so sorry, I didn’t-” I stuttered out.

“No, it’s okay, sometimes we get carried away, but let me show you the way that doesn’t end in one of us bleeding.” He almost laughed. 

He leaned in again, and this time I didn’t move, too embarrassed that I had already managed to muck it up. Slowly, he kissed me again, and I kissed him back with extra care to be soft and gentle. I wanted to show him that I could learn to kiss the way he liked.

I felt his tongue run along my bottom lip, and I gasped. He used that to slide his tongue against mine, moving his hands from my face to my hair. I continued to let him lead the kiss, but my hands slid to his chest. I could already hear the way he was going to chastise me for the wrinkles in his shirt, but I couldn’t be bothered to care as I held onto him for dear life.

He pulled away for a split second to breathe, and I took that as my chance. I captured his tongue this time, surprising him into a gentle groan.

I pulled back.

“Like that?” I asked.

“You’re a natural.”

I checked my phone one last time before heading out for dinner. The last message between Draco and I was a set of three kissy face emojis. Begrudgingly, I tossed my phone in my purse and went to eat.

When I came home I pulled my phone out, noticing notifications from Draco.

“Baby, I need you so bad

I miss you so much”

I bit my lip nervously. I pulled my hair out of its ponytail and fluffed it up a bit, running to the vanity to put on some fresh lip gloss.

I paused. Slowly, I took my top off and posed for another selfie. Nothing too raunchy, but enough to keep him happy.

I didn’t hear from Draco the rest of the night, or through the next day. Time difference issues, I guess.

“The flight will be so worth it!” I double texted.

“Yea” He said back.

“Everything ok?” I asked.

“Yea, just tired” He responded thirty minutes later.

The plane landed, and I waited for my cell service to kick back in. I watched as my phone flooded with notifications from the hour long plane ride.

My friends checking in to see if I made it.

“Guys! You’ll never guess who just asked me to the Yule Ball!” Daphne squealed, running into our dorm.

“Let me guess, Enzo?” Pansy said, barely looking up from filing her nails.

“No! En- wait. How did you know?” She asked

“I have my ways.” Pansy smirked.

“You witch! That just leaves you, Y/n!” Daphne said excitedly.

I, on the other hand, was less than amused. The Yule Ball was on Friday of this week, and no one had asked me. At my silence Pansy finally looked up fully.

“Don’t worry babe, I’m sure someone is gonna ask you! You’re a total catch.” She said lightly.

“I just don’t get it guys, am I that unapproachable?” I asked, as Astoria walked in.

“You’re not, but your dad is. I have a billion questions on this potions essay, but I couldn’t stop him to ask any of them so I’m totally gonna need your help on this.” She said to me. “Anyways, what are we talking about?”

“Why no one has asked Y/n to the ball…” Pansy trailed off, and Astoria paled.

Wednesday

I rolled out of bed with a new motivation. I was gonna have a date for the ball Friday. How? I hadn’t gotten that far, but I would make it happen.

I styled my hair into ringlets, great hair running in the family definitely couldn’t hurt my case. Instead of putting on my usual Slytherin jumper, I chose a low cut, tight, black shirt matched with my skirt from last term. There was no way I wouldn’t catch at least one suitor’s eye with this outfit.

I made my way to the great hall feeling more confident in myself than usual. I plopped down on the bench next to Pansy, across from my half brother, Mattheo.

“Merlin, you look like mom.” He said, choking on his pastry.

I scowled.

“Don’t say that. I can’t go two seconds without hearing how alike I am to mom, or my dad. It’s no wonder I can’t get a date.” I said.

Theo’s head snapped to look at me, opening his mouth to say something, but pausing when he saw my attire.

Blaise chuckled from the other side of Pansy. “Oi, Nott, cat got your tongue?”

He snapped out of it, face returning to his normal care free demeanor. “Y/n, you haven’t got a date yet? The dance is Friday.” He said

“I know! I’m trying believe me, it just seems that everyone either has a date, or has miraculously vanished! At this point I would even say yes to Potter!” I ranted.

“Excuse me, did I hear that right? Someone find this girl a date, quickly.” Said Draco, narrowing his eyes at me after practically choking on his eggs.

Thursday

Classes were coming to an end, and I had still yet to find a date for the ball. I walked into the common room, dropping my bag on the floor by Mattheo. I practically threw myself onto the couch between Theo and Enzo.

“Is it me? Am I suddenly revolting?” I asked to no one in particular.

“Suddenly?” Mattheo mumbled, and I kicked him with my boot.

“Shut it, you tosser.” I said back.

“Still no luck, Y/n?” Enzo asked.

“No. Absolutely none! I even strutted past the Gryffindor table, and the only attention I got was from weaselby, but even he didn’t make a move!” I threw my head onto his shoulder, exasperatedly, kicking my feet into Theo’s lap in the process.

“There there Principessa, I’m sure it’ll all work out.” Theo said, putting his hands over my legs.

“Yeah, with less than a day left to go, I’m sure it’ll be fine.” Mattheo joked, and I just let it go.

He was right anyways.

I sighed, and Enzo ran his fingers along my scalp in a soothing manner. I closed my eyes, but couldn’t feel Theo’s boring into me.

Friday

The dreaded day rolled around, and let’s just say I was less than enthusiastic.

I did my best not to bring down the mood for everyone else during the day, but it was difficult. Everyone was just so damn giddy, it was hard not to hex myself into oblivion.

Finally classes for the day came to an end, and I trudged my way back to the dungeons. The common room was practically empty, but I realized it was because everyone was getting ready.

I made my way up to the dorm and the energy shifted immediately. All my girlfriends were starting to get ready, muggle music playing from Pansy’s charmed radio, and when I opened the door I was greeted with giggles and good vibes. That was when I realized even though I didn’t have a date, I still had a gorgeous black dress.

I was immediately dragged into the chaos. Suddenly I was applying eyeliner to Pansy, while Astoria was putting rollers in my hair. Daphne slipped out, something about finishing touches, but she already had her dress on.

Eventually, all of us were dressed to the nines, looking both dangerous, yet alluring. Pansy was putting the finishing touches to my lip gloss when Daphne came back up.

“Y/n~ I have something for you!” She practically sang as she walked over.

Pansy stepped back smiling with Astoria, as Daphne pulled a box out from behind her back.

“Here!” She said, excitedly.

I opened the box, and inside was a gorgeous white, green, and black corsage. My breath hitched.

“You guys! You didn’t have to do this! It’s beautiful!” My voice wavered.

“Actually… we didn’t.” Astoria said, pulling me up and out the door, the other two following behind.

As we made our way out the door, we saw the boys all standing at the bottom of the stairs. One by one, their heads turned, admiring us all.

Theodore turned last, and when he was facing me, I gasped. Pinned to his lapel was a small flower, matching the ones on my wrist.

I walked down the stairs to him, the other girls walking with me, but each going to their own dates.

“Mattheo, who are you going with?” I heard Daphne ask.

“Some Hufflepuff, she looked desperate and kind of crazy, but in a hot way, so I figured what the hell. I actually probably should be meeting her soon.” He said making his way to exit the common room.

“Why don’t you lot all go to the ball, and Y/n and I will meet you there. I think we have some things to discuss.” Theo said, guiding me to sit down by the fireplace.

“Please don’t snog my sister there, I read in that chair!” Mattheo called back to us, being ushered out with the others.

“When do you ever read?” I heard Draco mutter, and I snickered.

I looked Theo in the eyes once more and almost teared up.

“If you wanted to take me to the ball, why didn’t you just ask me?” I said.

“I wanted you to have the option to go with someone else if you wanted to.” He said, brushing my arm with the back of his knuckles.

“Oh Theo, that’s so sweet. But everyone said I wasn’t being asked because everyone is afraid of my family?”

“I mean, that didn’t help, but none of the other girls got asked by people outside our friend group, either. None of us are afraid of each others families. We all grew up relatively alike.”

“So, you were planning on asking me this whole time? You just didn’t want to force me into it?”

“Essentially, yes. But I apologize if my waiting made you doubt yourself. You are perfect in every way, bloodlines or not. I wouldn’t change a thing about you.” He said.

Something in my chest warmed. I leaned in, and he met me halfway. Our lips collided, but it wasn’t a mess of teeth and tongue, it was steady, like breathing. I tilted my head to deepen the kiss, but he pulled away.

“Principessa, I promise I want nothing more to ravish you right now, but you put so much effort into your attire, and you deserve a perfect night at the ball first.” He said.

I smiled, nodding my head. He took my arm, and as he led me to the ball, I realized I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I was walking past the drop ship when some of Bellamy’s pathetic followers cornered me. They pushed me against the wall of the ship and pointed knives at me.

“Let us cut the wristband, or we cut you.” Said one of the boys.

I turned my head away.

“Fine.” The boy said, and raised his knife.

“Hey!” Clarke yelled and ran over, Murphy and Bellamy following. “We had a deal, everyone gets a choice.”

“Whatever, princess.” Said the boy, walking away.

“You okay?” Murphy said, eying my wrist.

“Yeah, everything’s okay.” I said hesitantly.

But let me kiss your lips, so I know how it felt

Murphy and I crawled into our shared tent. The atmosphere was tense, neither of us having said much since the incident earlier today.

We crawled into our bed, two twin sized air mattresses pushed together. We didn’t touch, or face each other. Both of us just stared at the top of the tent.

“Y/n, I don’t know why you’re being so difficult about this. Everything would be so much easier for you if you just took it off. No one would mess with you.” He said.

“I thought no one was messing with me because of you.” I joked.

He sighed. “I’m serious, you are acting like Clarke, all self righteous and shit.”

I turned to face him, and he mirrored my movements. I didn’t say anything. He didn’t pry anymore. I just looked at him. Into his eyes, his soul, him.

I gave him a sad smile, then leaned in to kiss him. One last time. It was slow, gentle. There was something different about him. About us. I noticed it, I just don’t know if he did.

Pay for my coffee and leave before the sun goes down

The next morning, Murphy was gone when I woke up. It was odd, because the sun was just now coming up, and normally he slept in later than I did, but I supposed it was for the best.

I quietly packed my things into my bag, then made my way to the drop ship. I set my things down inside, but made no move to tell Murphy that I had moved my things out. He would find out soon enough.

I went to the food tent to get some protein before I started my work, and that was when I noticed the commotion. People were yelling and fighting, and that’s when I noticed only people without wristbands were receiving their rations.

“Anyone with a wristband will not be receiving rations! You want your food? Cut it off!” There was no mistaking Murphy’s voice.

I made my way through the crowd, and up to the front.

“Good morning, babe! Why don’t you let me show these people how this works! Give me your wrist.” He said holding his hand out expectantly.

“What? I’m not cutting mine off, Murphy, we talked about this.” I said, baffled.

“Sorry baby, no breakfast for you then.” He said.

My jaw dropped.

“You can’t be serious.” I said.

“I can’t give you special treatment just because you’re my girlfriend.” He smirked.

I walked away without another word.

The day was a long one. The rations were withheld for lunch as well, and this time they were withholding water too. Bellamy and Murphy were getting desperate.

Dinner rolled around, and that’s when people really started giving in. Without eating or drinking anything, working all day everyone had started to feel weak, making them succumb to the trade off.

I walked up to the food hut.

“Murphy. Give me my rations. I’m tired of this.” I said, no niceties in my tone.

He looked kind of taken aback by how how harsh I was being, but at this point I didn’t care.

“You know the rules sweetheart, we trade the band for the rations.” He shrugged.

“Fine. But Bellamy does it. Go get him.” I said.

Hurt crossed Murphy’s features for a fraction of a second, before he replaced it with the mask of indifference he always wore.

He walked off before coming back with Bellamy in tow.

“Glad to see you’re finally on the right side, Y/n. Give her her rations.” He ordered, and Murphy did, before turning to back to the crowd of people.

Bellamy snapped my wristband off with his knife, and went to walk away, but I grabbed his wrist. He looked at me confused.

“Bellamy, I want to switch shifts. I want the night shift, starting tonight.” I said.

“What? Why would you want that?” He asked.

“It doesn’t matter why, it just matters that I do.” I replied.

“But you haven’t eaten today, and you worked all day. You should sleep before switching shifts.” He said back.

“I’m starting tonight.” I stood my ground.

Walk for hours in the dark, feeling all hell

Bellamy told me I could help with perimeter checks tonight, and he would find me an actual position by tomorrow night.

Without saying anything else, I gave a curt nod and headed for the wall. Murphy was so caught up in yelling at people, he didn’t seem to notice.

I made my rounds, going a little farther into the woods than I needed to, but it was nice. I was able to clear my head.

By the time morning rolled around, I went back to the drop ship to collect my things. I said hello to Clarke who was in the med bay just waking up, when Bellamy walked in.

“Murphy is looking for you, should I tell him you’re in here?” He asked, and I shook my head no. “Oh. Ok. Well… starting tomorrow, your new post is going to be in watch tower four with Jasper.”

“Great. Thank you.” I said, before crawling into a hammock.

He stared at me for a second, then looked at my stuff. It seemed like Bellamy was connecting the dots for himself, so I let myself sleep.

You’ve got a 9 to 5, so I’ll take the night shift

I slept through the day entirely, only getting up when Clarke made her way in for the night.

“Is Murphy still on duty?” I asked her.

“No, he just turned in, but he asked about you. I didn’t say anything, and I don’t think Bellamy did either.” She said.

“I’m sure he will figure it out soon enough.” I said, walking out of the drop ship and to my new post.

The shift change was nice. Everyone was tired, as opposed to when everyone is energetic for the morning shift. There was a sense of calm that wasn’t there before.

I’ll never see you again if I can help it

I made my way up to the watchtower to meet Jasper. He had some goggles, and a boyish smile to greet me.

“Hey Y/n, welcome to the night crew.” He said holding out a jar of clear liquid.

I laughed and took a sip. It was some of his and Monty’s famous moonshine.

“Wow! That’ll wake you up.” I joked.

“Yeah I like to keep it pretty chill up here. Nothing really happens on this side of the wall. I hope you’re ready to get to know me, because we are going to keeping each other a lot of company. I rarely see anyone else at this point.” He said, and I laughed.

“That sounds great.” I said, and settled in.

In five years I hope the songs feel like covers

Two weeks had passed since the wristband incident. Everyone had pretty much given up on the matter, and taken them off one way or another.

Jasper and I had gotten pretty close. By the third night, I had even brought my stuff up here, since no one uses this tower during the day.

Jasper was everything Murphy wasn’t. Kind, playful, silly, overall more fun.

I hadn’t seen Murphy much. The occasional glance between shift change, but we never spoke. When we did pass each other, my heart would jump, but it happens less and less as time goes on.

His face still holds the same indifference it always did, but now it also holds a tinge of longing.

But nothing is ever said, and nothing ever will be.

Sarah, Kate, and I rushed to Sarah’s car with the boys and the new guy right behind us. We were giggling all together, something about running from the cops giving us a silly rush of adrenaline. Kate offered the new guy a ride home, who introduced himself as Chase, and I made a mental note to bring up her flirting later since she’s with Pogue.

We all jump in Sarah’s car, but unfortunately the engine won’t turn over.

“Shit!” Kate and I both yell. Sarah leans her head out the window.

“My car won’t start!” She yells to the boys.

“Jump in with us!” Caleb shouts back and I smirk.

“I can’t just leave it here!” She says back.

“I can fix it for you!” Reid’s head pops up behind my brother’s.

I can’t help but roll my eyes. Of course he wants to show off to the new girl, she’s like a shiny new toy.

He lifts the hood of her car, and then drops it again, way faster than any mechanic would have, letting me know he used his powers. I rolled my eyes again.

“Try it now!” The car started up immediately.

“Thank you!” She shouted back.

I looked up to see Reid pushing Tyler into the passenger seat, the latter not looking very happy about it.

Once we got back to the dorms we said goodnight to Chase and went to our room. We all sat on the bed talking about the party when Kate brought up Reid and Caleb both hitting on Sarah. My head whipped to face her, jaw dropped, and she just smiled shyly.

“If I were you I’d pick Caleb.” Said Kate.

“Why? Sarah asked.

“I dunno, he’s always been the sweet one. That, and Y/n has been crushing on Reid since they were kids.” Kate whispered the last part under her breath, but not quiet enough.

“What?” Sarah looked at me dumbfounded.

“It’s just a crush!” I threw my hands up in defense. “Plus he’s such a flirt, I bet he doesn’t even notice me.”

Kate gave me a sad smile, and Sarah tilted her head.

“Whatever! It’s no biggie! I’m gonna go shower, I smell like smoke.” I said before getting my towel and walking down the hall to the showers.

While I was in the shower, I couldn’t help but feel like I wasn’t alone. I called out to see if anyone else was in here, but no one answered. I turned back to face the water. The lighting got brighter before there was a shatter, and the light was gone completely. The showers were completely dark now, so I turned off the water and wrapped my towel around me.

As I stepped out, I looked around and saw the shattered bulb on the floor, but there was still no one there. I turned around and jumped half out of my skin at the reflection of myself in the mirror, but again, it was just me.

Hurriedly, I walked out of the bathroom careful to avoid the broken glass. I walked through hallway quietly, listening to hear if anyone else was walking around. I paused, hearing steps behind me, turning around to be met with no one, again.

Turning back around to continue the trip back to my dorm, I screamed and almost dropped my towel. Reid was about 4 inches away from me.

“Holy shit, Reid! What is wrong with you?” I half yelled.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you… that bad. We just got in.” He chuckled, smirking.

“No, I’m sorry I screamed so loud, I thought there was someone watching me in the shower, and I kept hearing things. I feel paranoid.” I said back.

He stepped closer, and then brushed past me, making me shiver since I was still in my towel.

“Let’s have a look, shall we?” He started for the showers.

I followed him in a silence. Not awkward, but not quite comfortable. I should probably feel more awkward, but something about Reid always makes me feel calm. Even though that’s the exact opposite of the energy he brings with him.

We walk into the showers together and he takes a look around the room.

“I, uh, don’t see anyone.” He said.

“There was- I-” I stammered.

“Let me walk you back.” He gave a small smile.

“Thank you.” I said once we made it to the door.

He stared at me for a minute, and I almost thought he was going to say something. Instead, he just gave a quick nod, turned around, and walked away. I looked down to unlock my door.

“Goodnight Reid!” I called out, but he was already gone.

The next day, Kate, Sarah, and Chase all went into town to run some errands. I had homework, so I stayed behind, but told them I would see them at Nicky’s this evening.

I finished my homework, but it wasn’t time to go yet, so I got dressed and made my way to the boys dorms.

“Yo, Ty, it’s me. Open up.” I banged on my brother’s door.

The door opened to a very unimpressed Tyler, and I made my way in. Unfortunately, his bed was covered in laundry, so I threw myself on Reid’s bed instead, noticing his absence.

“Where’s the other one?” I asked, grabbing a book off the nightstand. Dreamcatcher.

“He’s in the shower. We had swim practice and he didn’t wanna stink like chlorine when we go out.” Tyler responded.

I made a hum of acknowledgement, wondering if he would see anything weird during his shower. Realizing I was thinking about Reid in the shower, I opened the book and started reading, just to get my mind off him.

As if he heard us talking about him the door opened, and in walked Reid himself. Similar to my attire last night, he was only wearing a towel, and I had to admit, he was looking mighty fine.

“What’s up baby Simms?” He asked, as I put the book over my eyes so he could get dressed.

“It’s literally by 4 minutes, when is everyone gonna stop calling me that?” I rolled my eyes, even though they couldn’t see them.

“Sorry sis, that’s what you get for losing the fight to get out.” Tyler said, and I could practically hear the smirk in his voice.

“It’s not fair. You’re the boy, you got the powers anyway, why did you get to be older too.” I pouted as Reid pulled the book off my eyes, effectively letting me know he was decent.

“She makes a good point, you could have let her have one win.” Reid chortled. I stuck my arm out in a ‘Thank you’ manner, and shot a look at my brother who just laughed.

“Whatever, let’s go. I’m driving.” Tyler said, and Reid held his hand out to pull me off the bed.

“Yeah, yeah, you and your car.” Reid said back before turning back to me. “Why were you in my bed anyway?”

“Because Ty’s a slob and never puts his laundry away.” I deadpanned, and he laughed.

“If you wanted to be in my bed you just have to ask.” He smirked, and I smacked the back of his head.

“Ew, don’t be a creep.” I said, but I was blushing anyways.

When we got to Nicky’s, Kate, Chase, Sarah, and Caleb were already there. I took Tyler and Reid’s jackets, and joined the group at the table, while they split off to go play pool. I looked over to see Aaron and his friends already over there and sighed. This never ends well.

We hung out for about half an hour before Pogue showed up too, apparently he had to fix his bike. When he greeted Caleb, he mentioned that Reid and Tyler were here too, which I thought would be obvious considering I was here, but I guess not.

Pogue went to go grab some food, saying hi to the other two boys in the process, and since I was nosey, my eyes kept wandering over there. That was a mistake when they placed bets on one of the waitresses’s underwear. My crush, my brother, and one of my taken best friends. Gross.

Within a few minutes, Chase and Caleb had started a game of foosball, which left only me, Sarah, and Kate at the table.

“Wait, what just happened?” Sarah asked.

“What do you mean?” Kate said, and I nodded.

“Just a minute ago, we were all having fun, and now we are sitting here watching them have fun.” She said.

I shrugged, and Kate said, “It’s just what girls do.”

Sarah shook here head with a coy smile. “Uh uh, I’ll show you what girls do, someone give me a quarter.”

I pulled one out and handed it to her.

“Thank you.” She said in a sing song way, making her way over to the juke box.

Kate and I laughed as she chose a song and made her way to Caleb. Pogue gave him a pat on the shoulder as he was dragged out to the dance floor to dance with Sarah. Kate cheered, and Pogue looked at her, some emotion flashing across his face, but I didn’t know if it was guilt, or regret, or anger…

I looked back over to Reid and Tyler, wishing Reid would come ask me to dance, but the second I looked over a glass broke, and Aaron and Reid were pushing each other.

“Shit!” I said as Pogue and I made our way over, collecting Caleb on the way.

We all made our way outside to back each other up, but I was trying to catch Nicky’s eye on the way out so he would come break it up. Whether I succeeded or not, I wasn’t sure. Reid and Tyler were outside before the three of us.

“You bet him he couldn’t make the shot and he did!” Said Tyler.

“Well too bad, cause we’re not paying.” Said Aaron.

“What’s going on?” Caleb said as we stood next to our friends.

“He bet me I couldn’t make a combo shot, and well… I did.” Reid said with a knowing look.

“Listen-” Aaron was cut off by Nicky.

“Hey! Take it somewhere else!” He shouted from the door with a baseball bat.

“Whatever you say, Nicky.” Said Aaron, as he and his friends walked past us, shoulder checking us on the way out.

Reid pulled me behind him and Tyler so I didn’t get hit. I tried not to read too much into it. It’s just because I’m Tyler’s sister. Nothing else.

“What were you thinking?” Caleb asked when it was just us.

“I was just playing him.” Reid moved to face Caleb head on.

“Yeah, come on Caleb, they were suckers for it.” Said Tyler.

Reid walked closer to talk right in his ear and said, “Why don’t you quit being such a pussy?”

Caleb put his palm across Reid’s shoulder, and I stepped forward but Tyler pulled me back.

“I’m not finished with you yet.” Caleb said when Reid went to walk away.

Reid grabbed Caleb’s hand and used his powers. I don’t know what kind of spell he was using but it was strong enough to define the veins running through Caleb’s hand and arm.

“Reid.” Caleb winced. “Stop.”

But he didn’t. And it was visible the moment Caleb had enough. He clenched his the fist that Reid had, and it was enough to send Reid flying back into the wall of the building next door.

“Reid!” I screamed and went to lunge at Caleb, but Tyler held me back again, and gave me a stern look that said ‘Just let them fight it out.’

Pogue looked at me, then Reid, then Tyler. I looked between the both of them baffled that they would just watch. Sure they all fought, but it had been escalating recently with all of them ascending soon.

Caleb gave his usual ‘Don’t use, it’s seductive, you’re gonna expose us, I’m so self righteous’ speech, but Reid wasn’t having it. He levitated a metal barrel and hurled it right at Caleb, who sent it back with an alarming amount of force, sending Reid flying yet again, this time into pallets of glass bottles.

Reid got up slowly, but Caleb was already heading for him again, and finally Pogue intervened.

“Caleb, stop!” He said, pulling him back.

“It’s for his own good!” He said, not taking his eyes off Reid. “Keep using like you did last night when you ascend, you’ll be as good as dead!”

“So what? I fixed her car? Big deal!” Reid shouted back, Tyler and I running over to help him up.

“I’m talking later and you know it!” Caleb said, and I paused.

Like when I was in the shower later?

“The hell I do! I. Didn’t. Use. Later.” He said pushing past Pogue and Caleb.

“We shouldn’t use on each other, man.” Tyler tried to say.

“Oh tell it to Reid.” Caleb said back.

“Y/n, come on.” Ty said to me, as I hadn’t moved since helping Reid up.

I walked past all three of them before tyler followed me. I walked just fast enough that he wasn’t falling into step with me, but that I also didn’t catch up to Reid either.

By the time we made it back to the car, we had all inevitably synced our steps up. I didn’t say anything. I got straight into the back seat and slammed the door.

“Hey! Watch the doors!” Tyler said trying to lighten the mood.

I shot him a glare, and he shut up.

Reid sighed. “Look, Y/n-”

“No. Both of you just shut up. All of you were being immature and you all know that I hate that.”

The rest of the ride home was silent. Once we made it back, I went straight to my dorm, splitting off from the boys when we rounded the first corner. I didn’t bother saying goodnight, neither of them deserved my pleasantries at the moment.

Kate and Sarah were still out when I got back, so I got into bed with a book. I must have dosed off, though, because when I woke up, it was storming outside. Kate was fast asleep, and Sarah was tossing and turning, but looked to be asleep also.

Something felt wrong though. I looked closer, and her face was showing that she was in distress. She must have been having a nightmare. I stood up to wake her, but that was when I saw a spider crawling out of her ear, and she sat upright with a start.

She looked at me, then at Kate, then back at me. I pointed down to the covers where the spider was, but when we looked at it there was nothing there.

Sarah and I shared one last look, but I couldn’t completely decipher her face, and it didn’t seem like she could read mine either. I scooted back into my bed, wide awake now. I curled up, knees to my chest and started out the window.

I didn’t get any real sleep, the suspicion of something not being right weighing on my shoulders. I probably dosed a few times before deciding sleep was a lost cause, and just getting up. By then some of the early risers were up too, so I got dressed quietly, and left the dorm.

I walked the halls for a while before going to the spot where Tyler, Reid, and I always meet up before class. They were walking up as I was.

“Woah, baby Simms, you look like hell.” Reid said, oh so charmingly.

“Yeah, what happened to you?” Tyler asked.

“I- did either of you- nevermind.” I stuttered out.

“No, did either of us what?” Reid asked.

“Did either of you use last night? Like, to play a joke on Sarah or something?” I looked at Reid, before Tyler jumped in.

“See? I told you I felt someone using.” He said.

I got goosebumps, because I don’t even have powers, and twin telepathy alone was enough to let me know someone was doing something bad. Caleb and Sarah seemed to really hit it off, so I doubt it was him. That left Pogue, but that didn’t seem right either.

We all looked between each other, unease settling between us.

Summary: After finding out your whole relationship was a lie, and that you were just working as a spy for the Order, there is no going back on the betrayal to Mattheo.

The look on Mattheo’s face was debilitating as it etched its way into my memory forever. Standing on the other side of the battle of Hogwarts, his face flashed from realization, to hurt, to anger, to stone.

I tried to look him in the eyes, but he wouldn’t meet my gaze. All the small intimacies we once shared flashed through my head at once, the relationship we had built on “trust” now shattering at my feet.

As Harry jumped down from Hagrid’s arms, and the fight sprang to life, I saw him stand still just a moment too long. Then he was coming right at me.

Both of us were casting spells left and right. We were creating a path to each other it seemed, but if he needed closure, I at least owed him that much.

“Was any of it true?” He asked me, once we had closed the distance between us. There was still no readable expression on his face.

There was a flicker of something across his face at the nickname. It disappeared just as quickly as it arrived.

I locked eyes with Draco from across the common room. I was standing with Daphne and Pansy by the drinks table, and he was standing with Theodore and Blaise on the other side of the room.

Ever since our heated argument in Potions about the right type of crushed stone for a preservation potion, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about him.

How assertive he was, how he wouldn’t back down, something about it was so attractive. I didn’t want to admit it to anyone else, but anyone with eyes knew he was good looking.

And if you know that I want it now, well you can never give it up, cause I’ll never get enough

Someone yelled out that a game of Seven Minutes in Heaven was starting. Daphne pleaded for Pansy and I to join in, claiming she didn’t want to play without us.

Reluctantly, Pansy and I were dragged into the circle. My reluctance was lessened when I saw Draco being drawn in also. He had a scowl on his face as Blaise and Theo pulled him by his sleeves.

Oh, woah, I got a young naivety

Someone flicked their wand and the bottle was spun. Time passed as people got paired off, and pushed into the broom closet. Some people returned to the circle after their turn, others, like Daphne and Theo went straight to the dorms.

Pansy had just made her way back to the circle after being paired with Adrian Pucey, wiped her mouth off, acting like she was disgusted. That meant it was my turn to spin.

I flicked my wand and held my breath, watching as the bottle made its rounds. The bottle stopped and I followed the neck to see who it landed on. I saw a pair of steely grey eyes looking back at me.

Oh, woah, and my lust is a title wave

Draco stood up, expression not moving, walking over to me. I looked up at him through my lashes as he held his hand out for me to take.

I grabbed it and he pulled me up and toward the closet. I looked at our hands, then at Pansy who gave me a wink, then back in front of me, as we entered the dark space, with a smirk on my face.

Because seven minutes in heaven is all that I need when I get with him

Draco’s hands immediately found my hips, mine finding his hair as our mouths collided. The kiss was rough and messy, everything Draco isn’t.

“You think you’re so clever, challenging me in class.” He slipped his hands under my skirt.

“It’s not my fault you don’t know crushed moonstone from crushed quartz.” I tugged his hair, speaking against his lips.

He let out a low groan, and kissed me harder.

“Times up!” Someone banged on the door.

He opened it up, hand in mine again. I looked at Pansy again, her jaw basically on the floor, as Draco led me past the circle of Slytherins, and straight to his dorm.

Miscommunication Trope

Pairing: Mattheo Riddle x Reader

Summary: Reader overhears Mattheo talking shit, not realizing that she didn’t get the context. Now Mattheo has to fix it.

Warnings: Miscommunication (obviously), Hurt/Comfort, OOC Mattheo, Bad writing, Not proofread, that’s it I think? Let me know if I missed any!

A/N: I literally had absolutely no idea what I was doing when I wrote this and the ending is so bad but I didn’t know how to finish this. Sorry in advance, I’m trying to get better!

Being paired with Pansy for a potions project at the beginning of term, meant making a fast and dear friend. Along with Pansy, however, came the boys that seemed to cause chaos wherever they went.

No matter, as they had all been nice enough, and welcomed me into the group, graciously. Trips to Hogsmeade became more frequent, as did staying up late in the common room, yapping about nothing and everything all at once.

Tonight was no different than any other night, except maybe a bit chillier. I made my way into the dungeons, this time carrying a big tray of cookies and mugs of hot chocolate. As I rounded the corner heading into the common room, I heard voices.

“She’s so daft, Theo, she hangs around with no clue that she is driving me mad. It’s honestly getting quite annoying.”

My heart sank. I paused, maybe they weren’t talking about me.

“Be nice, Matt, Y/n is our friend, you shouldn’t say such rude things about her.”

They were.

I walked into the room, my chest tight, at the same time Draco and Pansy came down from the dormitories, giggling about something in a way only lovers do. I set the tray down on the table quickly.

“Y/n, you brought snacks? You spoil us! We don’t deserve you.” Pansy said.

I formed a tight lipped smile. “Of course, anything for my friends. I’m actually feeling pretty tired, I’m gonna leave these for you guys, and turn in for the night.” I glanced at Mattheo.

“What? No, babes, we were gonna have a chill night. Just stay with us, I promise you’re not too tired for a cozy night in.” She said, hopefully.

“Sorry, Pans, not tonight.” I said, before turning and walking up the stairs.

With my eyes already welling up with tears, I kept my head down, but that posed to be an issue when I bumped into Blaise and Enzo, who must’ve also been on their way down to the common room. I looked up, startled, tears flowing, and mumbled an apology, before darting past them and into my dorm.

Downstairs, everyone was enjoying the cookies and hot chocolate. Blaise walked in and sat next to Pansy, while Enzo immediately reached for a warm mug.

“Hey, what’s up with Y/n?” He asked Pansy.

“What do you mean?”

“We bumped into her on the way down and she was crying. I figured she must have told you what was wrong.”

“What? No, she literally just dropped this off and said she was turning in for the night. I’m sorry, I need to go check on her.” She said, getting up to come talk to me, not noticing the guilty look on Mattheo’s face.

I laid in my bed, crying quite pathetically, trying to think of what I could have done to make Mattheo say such unkind things about me, when there was a knock at the door.

“Y/n it’s me, Blaise said you were crying, can I come in?” Pansy.

I sniffled. “Fine.”

The door opened to reveal Pansy holding a mug of hot chocolate. She stepped in, closing the door behind her.

“What happened? Why are you crying?”

I sat up, taking the hot chocolate from her, but not taking a sip. “Did I do something to offend Mattheo?”

“Uh, not that I know of, he hasn’t said anything to me about anything.”

“Has Dray told you anything? Guy talk maybe?”

“No, nothing. Why, what happened?”

I told her everything I had heard when I walked in, no longer crying, but rambling about what I could have possibly done to make him feel so negatively about me. Between Pansy and I, we came up with nothing. Not once had I been rude, harsh, or snarky to Mattheo, so what was his problem?

Meanwhile, downstairs there was quite a commotion going on.

“She heard you talking shit about her, you idiot!” Theo pointed directly at Mattheo.

“But I wasn’t talking shit!” He argued back.

“Woah woah, calm down. Were you guys talking about Y/n before she got here?” Draco asked, pushing Theo’s accusatory finger back.

“Yes, but I swear it was nothing bad.” Mattheo said.

Theo fully jumped out of his chair. “She doesn’t know that! All she probably heard was you insulting her!”

Enzo about choked on his cookie. “Wait wait wait- What did you say?”

Mattheo went quiet for a second before covering his face with his hands. Theo took that as his turn to talk.

“This absolute moron called her daft, annoying, and said she was driving him mad.” He dead panned.

Draco paled more than he already was. “You said what? About the poor sweet girl who just baked us cookies? Who made sure to put extra cinnamon in your hot chocolate because she knows you like it? You called her what?”

Mattheo just shook his head.

“I didn’t mean it like that! Just- How could she be so daft to not see she’s driving me mad? Ever since Pansy introduced her to the group the whole dynamic has shifted. Enzo gets better grades, you and Pansy haven’t had any trouble in paradise, and I haven’t been in detention for weeks. Weeks! Because if I were, I would be wasting my time there instead of getting to see her. She drives me mad in the best way possible. I’m crazy about her, and it’s getting annoying that she has no idea.”

At the confession, Blaise actually did choke. All the boys were speechless. The silence was so deafening Mattheo could swear his ears were ringing. Then there was the clicking of shoes on the floor. The boys turned their heads to the stairs seeing one pair of feet emerge from the dorms.

Pansy’s eyes were narrowed into slits. The sharp glare directed only at Mattheo.

“She is finally asleep. She just about cried herself to sleep, but asleep none the less. Now, you have to deal with me. What the fuck is wrong with you?” She jabbed her finger into his chest. “She is so kind that it’s a miracle she was even sorted into Slytherin. She takes care of all of us more than our own families do. She is probably the only good thing to happen to us in a very long time. So answer me. What. The fuck. Is wrong with you?” The end of each sentence was enunciated with another finger jab.

He looked like a kicked puppy, face falling more with every word out of Pansy’s mouth. Draco, gently grabbed her elbows and guided her farther back from the poor boy, muttering something about ‘needing to talk, it was a misunderstanding’ but none of it mattered to Mattheo because he had royally fucked up. He stormed off to the boys dormitory without saying anything else.

The next morning I went to the common room to wait for Pansy and the guys. As luck would have it, Mattheo was the only other person down there waiting. I turned around to go back to the dorm and wait a few minutes, but he had already seen me.

“Y/n, wait!” He called after me.

“I’m sorry Mattheo, I have nothing to say to you. Whatever problem you have with me, you won’t have to deal with it anymore.” I said as I kept walking.

He ran up behind me and grabbed my arm. I yanked, but he held on firmly, not tight enough to hurt, but tight enough that when he twisted me I turned. Seeing as I was already half way up the stairs when he caught me, he had to steady me so I didn’t fall back down them.

“Y/n please, just listen, I didn’t mean what I said- I mean I did- but not the way you heard it!”

“Mattheo, what? What are you even trying to say right now?”

“I’m trying to say that you drive me mad! I’m absolutely crazy about you, and it’s getting annoying because even when I hang around, or go out of my way to spend time with you, you still don’t notice! But you’re not the daft one, I am, because somehow I made you think that you were the problem, and you’re not.”

I opened my mouth, then closed it again.

“What?” Was all I could muster.

“Salazar’s sake Y/n please forgive me. I feel absolutely awful for making you cry, especially when you went to all the trouble of making us snacks and drinks. I know I don’t deserve you, or your forgiveness, but please.”

My lips curved into a smirk.

“Mattheo Riddle. Did you just beg me to forgive you? Who even are you?”

He let out a small scoff.

“I guess that’s just what it’s come to.” He smiled.

“I forgive you. But next time, please just tell me when something is bothering you? I promise I don’t bite. If you’ve got something to say to me say it to my face.”

He nodded, smiling softly.

“I do have something to say.”

I looked at him expectantly.

“Will you be my girlfriend? I think I might actually lose it if I wait any longer to ask.”

“Yes.” I said.

Hoots and hollers came from the top of the stairs where our friends emerged. Pansy had Draco’s arm wrapped around her, and looked at me with a knowing smile. Theo gave Mattheo a thumbs up, Blaise just snickered.

Enzo stepped forward.

“Took you long enough! Now can we go to breakfast? I’m starving!”
