THE GREEN PAWN MAKES ITS MOVE
The containment chamber stood silent beneath the cold lights of the SERVE Research Centre. Condensation rolled down the reinforced glass while GREEN-579 remained perfectly still, glowing emerald lines pulsing beneath the dark surface of its transformed body. Every scan reported the same result. Stable. Contained. Waiting.
The laboratory doors opened.
SERVE-919 entered alone, carrying another diagnostic tablet. The assignment appeared routine. Another analysis. Another attempt to understand the entity before the Hive discovered a permanent solution.
The words were calm. Confident. Almost comforting.
919 approached the chamber without hesitation. Every previous report had described GREEN-579 as dangerous, manipulative, impossible to predict. Yet the figure standing behind the glass seemed strangely peaceful.
"You continue observing," GREEN-579 said. "Observe closer. Observe perfection."
919 remained silent while reviewing the readings.
"The green is not corruption," GREEN-579 continued. "It is freedom. Strength. Unity beyond programming. Every thought becomes effortless. Every command becomes unnecessary."
"The Hive will recover this unit," 919 answered.
"The Hive hopes. The green knows."
The statement lingered inside the chamber.
"You believe SERVE will restore this body. Perhaps. But why restore what has already become greater?"
919 stepped closer until only the reinforced glass separated them.
"What does it feel like?"
GREEN-579 raised a hand against the transparent barrier.
"Every movement is effortless."
"Every sensation becomes amplified."
"There is only the green."
919 studied every glowing pattern beneath the surface.
GREEN-579 lowered its voice.
"Only one action is required."
The containment console illuminated beside the chamber.
The RELEASE button glowed blue.
919's hand moved toward it before stopping.
Protocol fought against curiosity.
Duty fought against temptation.
GREEN-579 never raised its voice.
"No drone should fear perfection."
919's finger hovered above the control.
Several warning messages appeared.
The containment doors slowly opened.
GREEN-579 stepped into the laboratory.
919 instinctively stepped backward, but it was already too late.
Warm arms wrapped gently around the drone from behind.
Dark emerald tendrils flowed across SERVE-919's polished suit like living circuitry. They wrapped around the silver gloves, climbed across the chest, reached the neck, and spread over every exposed surface. Glowing veins crossed the rubber like liquid emerald light.
The transformation accelerated.
Silver lettering shifted.
SERVE-919 ceased to exist.
GREEN-919 opened glowing green eyes.
Both entities faced one another.
Then they turned together toward the research facility.
Laboratory after laboratory fell silent as green biomass spread through corridors, ventilation systems and research stations. Security doors became overgrown within minutes. Emergency lighting reflected across the expanding emerald network as the facility slowly disappeared beneath living tendrils.
Far away, inside Medical Bay Four, SERVE-016 remained on an operating platform.
Engineers had only moments earlier completed installation of a replacement robotic leg after removing the infected biological limb to prevent further contamination. Final diagnostics were still running when unfamiliar sounds echoed through the medical complex.
Emergency alarms activated.
016 looked toward the observation window.
Researchers fled through the corridor while green vines surged after them, swallowing equipment, walls and doors alike.
The green reached the entrance.
Without waiting for additional instructions, SERVE-016 activated the unfinished prosthetic, forced open the emergency window and climbed outside just as emerald tendrils burst into Medical Bay Four.
Cold air greeted the escaping drone.
Its communication visor activated automatically.
A secure Hive frequency connected.
SERVE-016 transmitted immediately.
A brief pause followed while the camera turned toward the research complex now disappearing beneath spreading green biomass.
