Haven’t really been here in a hot minute. Sorry to everyone who has been waiting I just had a second hand surgery and hopefully this solves my problem. I had some bones removed so I’m still healing but it gives me time to reacquaint with my story.
Hey guys, just another update. I am still working on the next chapter, but I've had to take a pause because life got in the way and now I’m a month in to having pain in my dominant wrist. Once I can use my writing hand again I’ll be binge writing.
I finally figured out how to finish the last bit of my story and all I got to say is I’m excited for you guys to read the last two chapters (I do not have a chapter count just yet so I don’t know when that is). I’m just super stoked to get there.
He didn’t know what it was, whether it was finally having a bed or finally being able to relax knowing he could trust someone. He had ridden with the Byers to the castle, getting there early enough to have time to play with the children before class. El had been the one to win the game choice with another game of blindfold tag, Steve being the first to be blindfolded.
They spun him around several times before running away, nearly toppling down as chuckles spread out around him. It was relaxing to be out of their watchful eyes, and it was fun as he tried to navigate the small square of land without falling. The resounding chuckles turned to distance shuffles and gave way to their escape into the forest. When the call came, Steve removed the blindfold to be met with the quiet of the garden clearing.
“Ready or not, here I come!” He hollered. Breaking through the tree line, he saw his first person. Dustin’s curly locks sprung out of the thick bush, giving Steve the chance to sneak up on the unsuspecting child. With a smirk, he scooped the boy up, earning a squawk and a bout of kicks. “Gotcha Dusty!”
He snickered as the boy squirmed, whining and kicking at the older man. “Put me down!"
Steve did as asked, but not without ruffling Dustin’s fluffy locks, being paid with swats from the said boy. Once free, he grabbed his book from the ground and dusted it off with a stubborn huff. He turned to walk back to the garden entrance, confusing Steve. “Where are you going?”
“You caught me, so I shall wait for the others.”
“Nope! You get caught, and you join the seekers. Them the rules, kiddo. The younger boy sputtered, giving Steve a moment to walk further into the garden, Dustin giving chase.
Shrieks and groans filled the garden forest as the two found each kid one by one, recruiting them along the way to hunt for their friends and siblings. Nearly half an hour later, the group remaining was Mike, El, and Will, which the other children snarkily shared they stuck together.
It was Dustin that eventually found them, hidden under a stone staircase landing. Behind an overgrown bush was a hole in the stone building. A snarky “Ah-ha!” echoed from the young boy, attracting the attention of the others. The three kids were curled up in the small cavern, El being the first out, followed by her brother. Both wrapped their arms around him with congratulations.
Mike was the last out of the cavern, snapping at Dustin when he saw the victorious smirk on the young boy’s face. “You cheat! Only the seeker is to search! You are not allowed to join in!”
“Yes, I can! Curantis said I could!” Dustin harked back, both boys getting in each other’s faces. Steve stepped forward, pushing the boys back a few paces while trying to talk over their yelling.
“No, because you have magic and probably used to find us!”
“I did not! I found you fair and square!”
“Then how did you find our hiding spot? We found it only moments into his counting.” Dustin scoffed and glared, folding his arms with his book tucked against his chest protectively.
“I found that spot months ago. A benefit of spending time outside. You would benefit from that in your free time.”
“Well, not all of us have a reason to stay out talking to air!”
“Hey!” Steve snapped, yet was overshadowed by a growl coming from above them.
“Michael Angelo Wheeler! You quiet that mouth this instant!” Eyes shot up to the landing. A young woman around Steve’s age was glaring intensely at the group. He had seen her in passing with the kids, the king, or even the other young adults on the castle grounds.
“Shit,” Mike grumbled while she made her way down the staircase, eyes fixed on the young man. She butted her way between both boys, grabbing the lankier boy’s ear, and eliciting a whine from him.
“Not only did I have to come find you lot for classes, I come upon you cutting into how Dustin spends his free time. Have you no shame?! Apologize this instant and head to Hopper for training! Lords know he is going to make you work straight into dinner for being late!
Mike huffed, smacking his ear free from the girl’s clutches, nearly getting torn into again when Steve decided to cut in.
“Hey, it’s not their fault. I wasn’t watching the time while we played. I’ll just explain that to Hopper.” A chill ran down his spine as her glare fell on him.
“Not entirely. Where he has forgotten his manners, you have shirked your responsibility. I have come to collect Erica and Dustin. Must I do your job as well, Curantis, or can you be trusted to take the others to their classes?”
“Nope, I can take them.”
“Nancy, stop being such a priss! You act like mother!” Mike growled, his ear once again becoming her victim.
“I will stop when you stop acting like an uncultured swine. Now get, or shall I take it up with Commander Hopper?” The young boy grumbled, but the argument died on his lips. He kicked stones on the way out of the garden, Steve shuffling the other kids after their friend. He made quick work, dropping El and Will with Joyce, and Lucas with the king’s guard woman, leaving only Max and Mike. Once they got to the training field, the idea of leaving the two ten-year-olds was less pleasing. There were grown men and women in armor, swinging swords or shooting arrows. They seemed unfazed, walking to the burly man barking orders, standing at attention awaiting him to address them.
That left Steve’s morning until evening free and nothing to do, so he decided to explore the castle grounds. He wandered to the back garden, visiting Claudia’s grave. There was a fresh bouquet that hadn’t been there when he had left the night prior, perhaps from Dustin or one of the other castle occupants.
Regardless, it was nice that people remembered her even in death. He never lived near his extended family and doesn’t even know his grandparents by memory, or even if they’re alive. Maybe his parents didn’t care enough or love him past his necessity, but possibly his grandparents could. He doesn’t know if he could handle more rejection, but he could live alone. He’s done fine so far.
Kneeling, he cleaned the fallen leaves that cluttered the grave and repositioned the flowers on the cleared stone base. Maybe between shifts, he could help out around the castle, keep busy in the kitchen, help in the garden, or clean until the kids are out of class. It was peaceful out here - or was.
“Are you praying?” came from behind him, causing him to jump and flail to the ground. Standing above him stood Robin, arms crossed over her chest, a half smirk on her face. “Quite a dance.”
“Why are you skulking around? Don’t you have something to do?” He scoffed, pushing himself off the ground and dusting himself off.
“I could say the same thing. No children to lead around today?”
“Classes. I figured I’d use the time to learn the layout of the castle.”
“Alone? You would get lost quite fast.” With a roll of his eyes, Steve crossed his arms, mirroring the young woman.
“Well, if I’m going to live here, then I need to know the layout one way or another. Can’t spend all day in the gardens.”
Robin looked him up and down, silence falling between the two as she studied him. The smirk turned to a full grin before she whipped around, marching towards the castle. “I shall give you a tour, then. Come along!” Steve stuttered, following her while trying to think of a comeback.
Like in the market, Robin took the lead with rambling through each hall, over-sharing history. They came to a stop in a wing that seemed less lived in than the rest of the castle.
“And this is King Wayne’s personal hall, but Kas allows us to explore it whenever we like.”
“Isn’t that kind of invasive?” Steve scoffed, a little intrigued by the darkened hall.
“Anything considered private is behind a locked door. This hall has been my favorite over the years. It has been used as the main home of the royal family. It was always prepared in the event of an invasion. This hall has the most hidden passages throughout the castle. Come with me.” Robin pulled him along to a lounge filled with bookcases lined with books and plenty of sofas, like a nerd’s wet dream.
She dropped his arm in favor of flittering through the books, pulling several of them down until one slung back into place. Steve raised his brow at the book, only to jump back when the bookcase swung inward, revealing a darkened room.
Robin walked with a pep in her step, lighting the torches lining the wall with a flick of her wrist. Steve stepped into the room, taking in the hidden cavern. He should stop being surprised after being magically whisked away to another time, so hidden passages shouldn’t be that shocking. Still, it seemed elaborate for this time-period.
“This was a room built to house the royal family in the event of an attack, much like most of the passages.” She seemed like a real museum guide with her excitement while the young man investigated the books.
“The museum didn’t mention any of this,” He mumbled to himself as he fiddled with the book.
“Wha- Wait! Do not touch-!” before she could finish her warning, the bookcase swung shut, knocking Steve back. It latched with a loud thud, sealing them in.
“Shit.”
“Nice job, Dingus.” She groaned, rubbing her temple.
“He still has not made an appearance since he failed to drop off the children. Where could he hide that I have not already searched? Honestly, he was a poor choice for a nanny.” Nancy had waltzed into his office an hour ago and began a rant about Steve while he had been in the middle of going over parchments and signing off on requests. She had been relentlessly going off with her hands perched on her hips about how the nanny had failed to show up two hours ago when classes had ended. It was making his head throb and the words swim, stomach growling since he had missed lunch and was on a downhill slide of missing dinner.
“Are you paying any attention to my concerns?” She huffed, looking at the young king.
“Yes, Nancy. I have heard your concerns, however, have you thought of his side of things possibly? He is a stranger to this land and suffered a bout of illness that he has only just recovered from. Time may have just slipped his or perhaps he is asleep, he is only human. If you have not seen him at lunch then I am sure he will be at dinner.” Eddie said, keeping his head down.
“You trust too easily! What if he kidnaps the children while they are in his care!?” She yelled, slamming her hands on the desk. “Those children trust too quickly - Dustin is already infatuated with him!”
This time he did look up at Nancy, locking his gaze on hers. Behind the anger, he could see what fueled the outburst, fear. He knows that the twin's abduction had impacted everyone in different ways, knowing that the children all were treated like cracked glass.
“I am cautious, Nancy. I cannot let it dictate my response to people even though they have earned my trust. I believe he only wishes for help and after Max’s attack, has proven that he wants to protect them. Do not take me as a fool, there are always eyes on him. My people come first.” Eddie barked, standing without breaking their gaze.
“Even if you fancy him?” Her unwavering glare hardened.
“For my people, I will be the one to swing the sword.” A tense silence fell between the king and the teacher. It broke with a huff from the young woman, who backed up and crossed her arms over her chest protectively.
“When did you become so well-versed in your role? It seemed like a month ago you were making phallic jokes regarding mealtime sausage with a group of ten-year-olds.” Nancy scoffed, earning a chuckle from Eddie.
“Perhaps I just spent myself up to others and learned the best route with handling my people. Regardless, sausage jokes are still humorous, it is an acquired taste.” He snorted at his joke, getting a snort with an accompanying roll of her eyes. “Come, let us go to the dining hall. Supper will settle your cautious demeanor when you see Curantis digging into his platter.”
He extended an arm, leading Nancy out of the office, and down the hall. The walk down to the dining hall was filled with light chatter filled with teasing chatter. They only hushed up to a professional level as they came upon the guards in front of the dining hall doors. When they pulled open the doors it was easy to see that nearly everyone had made it there before them.
Nancy was quick to point out the missing occupant with a knowing glance, however, was interrupted by the guard captain, Chrissy. There was a concern that hardly painted her face that had Eddie on edge.
“What is the matter?” He asked, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“It is possibly nothing, but I have not seen Robin for hours. She is not one to avoid me for so long even with distrust between us, so I asked servants and she was spotted with Curantis. I fear something may have happened since no one can recall seeing either of them the rest of the afternoon.” Nancy seemed to pick up the shift in Eddie’s demeanor, turning to face the king with her concerned gaze.
“Do you share my concerns now?” A sigh left his lips, no argument to wager.
“Hopper! Gareth! We have missing occupants. I need all hands free and searching!” Silence fell over the room as the two men stood with seriousness. “Robin and Curantis have not been seen for hours, I need scout groups searching the castle grounds at once.” The dining hall erupted into commotion as the three commanding soldiers divided people into five different groups, setting out around the castle to search for the lost occupants.
Steve rubbed his shoulder as his last attempt at trying to break down the bookcase turned out like all the others. He bowed his head in defeat as he slid down the adjacent wall beside Robin, who had been tucked up together the last ten minutes watching him use his body as a battering ram. They had easily been trapped for three hours, spending the better half trying to find the passageway out to the other parts of the castle, and when that didn’t work, they tried to break down the door.
Robin had tried magic to get it open, finding the bookcase had been enchanted, which Steve agreed seemed like a logical idea. Their stomachs growled, knowing lunch had passed and dinner most likely had as well by this point. The torches were dwindling, with it was the heat, and Steve wished more than anything he had a coat to give the younger girl beside him.
This was all his fault.
His stupid curiosity got them barricaded behind a bookcase in a less populated area of the castle, without a way out. Not only that, but they hadn’t told anyone where they were going, so they weren’t sure when anyone would notice them missing. Days like these he finds some truth to his parent’s constant berating him for his lack of brains that would get him killed. He just wished he wasn’t taking Robin with him.
“You should stop thinking so hard. You will set flames to that hair of yours.” Speaking of said woman.
Steve turned to face her, expecting a hateful gaze and her ready to tear into him, so color him surprised when he saw the teasing smirk on her lips.
“What are you smiling about? Last I knew, we were screwed because I couldn’t keep my hands to myself.” He scoffed, tucking his face into his arms, the cold bracelet a small relief from his sweating body.
“No. We are trapped until we find the exit passage, yet there is no reason to punish yourself. I was the guide and failed to explain how the escape doors work. That being said, we should expect a search party once we do not show up at supper. Chrissy is already leading one if I know her well enough.” She nudged him with her shoulder, smirking at him as one torch blew out.
“Do you? Know her enough.” Steve asked, looking over at Robin with drooping eyes.
“I do. We have a special relationship, a guard captain and a notary, yet what we have is… enough.” She blushed, smiling off into the flames of the farthest torch.
“Like a hookup or a girlfriend?” A sputter of words left the younger lady as her face got a deeper red.
“Pardon!”
“You know, like dating or… or courting? Are you guys courting?” Steve would have to thank Grey for all the history lessons he’d given while they had gone through their routine.
“W-well yes. We spend what time we can together, with the king's knowledge and approval.”
“Does he not approve of same-sex relationships?” A familiar heavy feeling settled into his stomach. The golem hadn’t given that impression, but he was just a stone in the king’s image.
“Oh no, he is rather protective of Chrissy and Gareth. As far as I know, the king prefers the company of men. What of you?” That took Steve by surprise, their gazes locking.
“I-I… what?” He swallowed.
“Who do you fancy to share a bed with? I give no judgment, but I am curious about the life of Curantis that I neglected to learn.”
“I um… I like both… guys and girls.” He mumbled his turn to blush bright red. This was the first time he got to come out to someone of his own volition, his parents having taken that away from him.
“You seem unsure of that. If that is the case, do not feel pressured.”
“No! Th-that’s not it. I’ve just never been able to tell anyone before. My parents walked in on me and, who I thought was my boyfriend. He ran out and they kicked me out to the streets with nothing. Really thought he was into me more than what I had to give.”
“We seem to share parents with the same ideals. Believe me or not, but I was the daughter of a duke. Lady Robin of Buckhallow betrothed to Prince Kas. That is how I came to Hawkingland.” She had Steve’s attention, sitting back as the second torch diminished.
“As I stated, I prefer women and he, men, so neither of us was a promising match. King Wayne was much more understanding than my parents, and when they found out I was intimate with Kas' cousin-.” She paused, fiddling with her fingers. The older man reached out, taking her hand into his and giving it a comforting squeeze. Robin smiled, returning the squeeze before continuing her tale.
“When they found out I was no longer pure, they demanded I be punished by flogging. They did not get any farther than throwing me to the ground in front of the court, swinging his cane, before the guard captain drew her sword to protect me. That was when I was taken with her and swore my life to Chrissy.”
“That sounds… really shitty.” Robin snorted, leaning against Steve’s shoulder.
“King Wayne proudly welcomed me into the kingdom and exiled my parents. I was promptly disowned, becoming Robin Buckley, the sorceress notary.”
“Damn. That makes my parents' reaction look like nothing.”
“Trauma is not a competition. What your parents did was heartbreaking, but we do not require such people in our lives.”
“Those are some smart words, Birdie. Where was this attitude in the market?”
“Not everyone is trustworthy at first, but it was not fair of me to punish you for others' crimes. I thought Kas was letting his infatuation with you guide his judgment. I guess your heart is as good as your looks.” Steve scoffed with a roll of his eyes.
“Oh please. The only infatuation he has is with this bracelet. Until we figure out how to remove it, you all are stuck with me.”
“Do not sell yourself short, the king does use the eyes he was born with. I have borne witness to how he stares when you are in the room, no mind to what idle chatter Chrissy has shared with me.”
Steve couldn’t be happier at the room dimmed down to a single torch when he could feel the heat rising to his face. “It doesn’t matter. His uncle is already looking for the new owner of this bracelet.”
“Perhaps it is where it belongs, Curantis.” She gave his hand one last squeeze before dropping it and standing up. “Well, let us find this passage.”
Standing, Steve followed her as she groped the wall. “Didn’t you already look everywhere? Maybe the architects just forgot.”
“Arch-? No, the master masons that built the castle were a family of several generations. It is here. We have failed to find it.” Robin rambled, hand setting aflame, becoming the soul light as the last torch burnt out. Now with the flame closer, it was easier to inspect the stone.
He was happy not to be drowned in darkness, the cold and dark room bringing back memories that he was unsure if he could deal with. Still, they needed to escape before the feeling of being buried alive overtook him.
Steve joined her, pressed up against the wall, trying to find something unstable that they had initially missed. Robin searched for any difference she could section by section while Steve tested the stability. It was a couple minutes of shuffling before he came upon the wall that had some give, letting out a victorious cry.
Robin whipped her head at him, watching as the wall bounced back to Steve’s hands. She hurriedly brushed her flaming hand closely to the stone, a short bout of excitement before the wall burst into flames.
In only a few seconds several things happened. Robin gasped as the flames flicked out, Steve cried out in pain as he pulled his hands back to his chest, and the wall's structure started crumbling. Robin was fast thinking, pulling the older man out of the path of the collapsing wall, falling like dominos.
The threat of fire was smothered by the stone as they came to a fast halt, launching both of them into pitch darkness. Backed up beside the bookcase, the younger girl latched onto Steve, listening to the crumbling rubble. Aside from his heavy whimpers, the two stayed shaking against each other.
“I am so sorry, Curantis,” Robin whispered, gripping onto his arm.
“I-it’s fine. You didn’t know.”
“I should have. Masonry involves a multitude of materials.”
“Agree to disagree. I ain’t blaming you like you didn’t blame me.” Knowing he wouldn’t see it, she still nodded. “When is Chrissy going to look for us? I don’t think we should be left without adult supervision.” He earned a chuckle, joining her until quiet took over once more.
“Curantis?” Her voice quivered.
“Hm?”
“We will get out of here and Joyce to heal your hands.”
“I know.” He mumbled, eyes drooping. “Hey Robin?”
“Yes?”
“My name’s Steve.” There’s a pause while Robin registers what he said before letting out a snort.
“I prefer dingus.” He scoffed, nudging her with his shoulder, careful of his hands.
“Whatever you say, Birdie.”
Silence fell over them once more, leaving them with just the occasional sound of falling rubble and the growls of their stomachs. It felt like hours while they waited for someone to come find them, mumbling to one another just to make sure they were still awake. Since they couldn’t risk casting flames in case of something combusting, they had to face the teasing of death with every shift of a stone.
Since the quiet was their company, it was immediately known when someone else came into the room on the other side, muffled words making it past the passage door.
“Help! We are trapped behind the bookcase!” Robin yelled, the echo of her voice upsetting the stone around them. A moment passed before a knock came to the shelf, making the duo jump. “Yes! Here! Please, the cavern is collapsing. Pull the red book on the second shelf!”
Both sat with bated breath until the bookcase swung open, only to get a fraction of the way open before it got pinned by the boulders. It was small, but Robin was able to get out without a struggle, turning to help Steve out since his hands were no use.
Once she pulled him free, a group of guards helped them to their feet, Gareth standing back with his arms crossed. “You both have caused quite the concern. I will leave you to explain to Kas and Chrissy how you managed to collapse an escape cavern.”
“Yes, yes. Before you get your trousers in a twist, Curantis could use Joyce’s help.” Robin rolled her eyes, carefully cupping Steve’s hand in hers to get a better look at the burns. They had set in, blistered in several spots on both hands. All around they looked aggressive and needed attention.
Sighing, Gareth waved them on, leading them on while the other guards remained to clean up the mess. He led them to Joyce’s office, leaving them in the moonlit room to fetch the healer. Robin guided him to a cot before fluttering around the room, collecting materials, and returning to his side just as Gareth came back into the room.
Not only did he have Joyce tailing him, but Eddie and Chrissy. The older woman hurried to Steve’s side, looking over the wound on his hands before looking over Robin. Said girl opened her mouth to explain, but didn’t get a word out before Chrissy was tackling her in a hug.
“What happened?! Are you injured?!” If her arms hadn’t been full she would have held her back, but took the chance to rest her head on his shoulder.
“Only bumps and bruises. Truly, Curantis is in worse shape… no thanks to I.” She mumbled looking sorrowfully at Steve.
“My fault, Birdie. Agree to disagree, remember?” He smirked at the girl. “If it makes you feel better you can cut my food.” He teased, getting a scoff from the younger girl. She went to retort when the young king cleared his throat, grabbing the group's attention.
“Perhaps he is right. Supper was delayed in favor of our search. Chrissy, why not take Robin to the dining hall and have a servant send a meal for Curantis.” She seemed hesitant, only resolving when Steve nodded at her. She left the supplies on the bed before letting Chrissy whisk her away with good night wishes to everyone.
“I shall check her over before the evening's end, but your hands seem to be the priority. Hold your hand's palm up as steady as possible.” He did as told, Joyce wasting no time in holding her glowing hands over his. “Do tell. How did this occur? Robin seemed awfully apologetic. Should we be concerned?” She asked, not taking her eyes off her task.
“No. Nothing like that. We got trapped in a hidden wall and something on it was combustible. When we were searching for a way out, we were using fire to light the room. The wall went up in flames while my hands were on it. Just a little misadventure.” He gave a weak chuckle, watching as the blisters and raw wounds lessened to angry red burns. The glow died down then, revealing the still injured hands.
“The worst is healed. We need to give your skin a break from the magic. I shall apply a salve and bind your hands for the night. Once it has time to nourish your hands I will continue healing tomorrow.”
Joyce explained, picking up the materials when Eddie’s hand stopped hers, taking the materials from the older woman. Looking up she was met with a gentle smile. “Go enjoy supper, Joyce. I will finish with Curantis.” She smirked knowingly at him before passing the supplies to him.
“May I take a seat?” He asked Steve, the younger man taking a moment to nod. Taking a seat on the cot beside him, Eddie went to work, massaging the salve into the younger man's hands. “Dreadful burns, but alas I too have met with the consequences of misadventure. Far too tempting in my opinion.”
“Yeah. Figured I’d learn the layout so I didn’t get lost.”
“If one night of exploration gives you the lay of the land, then I shall applaud you. I spent a fortnight getting lost when I first came to the castle.”
“You weren’t born in the castle?” Eddie paused, hands hovering over Steve’s.
“I… no. I lived with my mother until my uncle needed an heir. It worked out for me, I get to rule over a kingdom.” Eddie chuckled, beginning to wrap the man’s hands up as a servant came into the room with a tray of food. “Supper is here.” He said as he finished the binding. “I best go enjoy my own meal unless you are serious about needing help eating.”
“Wha- I didn't-.” Steve sputtered, going bright red. A smirk raised to the king’s lips.
“I tease. Joyce’s family will be staying here tonight. Please use the cot tonight and in the morning she will look over your hands.” The younger man huffed, glaring through his bangs. Eddie reached up, brushing away the strands, giving him a clear view of the hazel globes.
Behind them, someone cleared their throat, which surprised them. They jumped, looking towards the doorways and spotting Gareth. He looked less than pleased, an expecting eyebrow raised at Eddie.
“Huh.” He sighed, looking back at Steve. “My guard is here to whisk me away, so I must cut our meeting short. Please enjoy having tomorrow off and away from the children.”
“Wait! I don’t need tomorrow off.”
“Nonsense. Eat and rest. We shall talk more tomorrow. ” Eddie rose, pulling back from Steve. “Goodnight puella.” He whispered before walking to his guard and leaving the young man alone, confused by the interaction.
Gareth waited till they were halfway down the hall before speaking up. “You must distance your attraction. What would Wayne say?”
“There is nothing to be concerned about.”
“You say that until your heart becomes wager. I know you, Eddie. Please control it.” The young guard begged, grabbing the king’s arm to stop him in place. Eddie stared down at Gareth, seeing the worry behind the caution in his eyes. He tried to reassure him, placing a hand on the young man’s shoulder.
“I promise Gare, my heart does not outweigh my duty. I owe everything to Wayne. Come, let us eat and in the morning I will send a letter out to my uncle.” That seemed to relax the guard, releasing his arm. Eddie squeezed his shoulder before turning and finishing down the hall.
I’m hoping to speed type chapter 7 and post it complete tonight, but as promised here is chapter 8, act 1 outline. If this is something you’d all like for me to do between chapters let me know.
Didn’t meet my deadline I gave myself, but o know I will get chapter 7 complete this week. Next chapter I’m excited for what I have planned. So I was thinking for chapter 8 that I can reveal one act for you guys. This is how my outline looks. So vote below for a preview. If you guys like this idea then I may do it to future chapters.
The resounding chuckles turned to distancing shuffles and gave way to their escape into the forest.
“Put me down!”
Steve did as asked, but not without ruffling Dustin’s fluffy locks, being paid with swats from the said boy. Once free, he grabbed his book from the ground and dusting it off with a stubborn huff. He turned to walk back to the garden entrance, confusing Steve. “Where are you going?”
“You caught me, so I shall wait for the others.”
“Nope! You get caught, you join the seekers.
“Shit.” Mike grumbled while she made her way down the staircase, eyes fixed on the young man. She butted her way between both boys, grabbing the lankier boy’s ear, eliciting a whine from him.
He made quick work, dropping El and Will with Joyce, and Lucas with the king’s guards woman, leaving only Max and Mike. Once they got to the training field, the idea of leaving the two ten-year-olds was less pleasing. There were grown men and women in armor, swinging swords or shooting arrows. They seemed unfazed, walking to the burly man barking orders, standing at attention awaiting him to address.
He never lived near his extended family, and doesn’t even know his grandparents by memory, or even if they’re alive. Maybe his parents didn’t care enough or love him past his necessity, but possibly his grandparents could. He doesn’t know if he could handle more rejection, but he could live alone. He’s done fine so far.
Kneeling down, he cleaned the fallen leaves that cluttered the grave and repositioned the flowers on the cleared stone base. Maybe between shifts, he could help out around the castle, keep busy in the kitchen, help in the garden, or cleaning until the kids are out of class.
Like in the market, Robin took the lead with rambling through each all, over sharing history.
Still, it seemed elaborate for this time period.

As promised, finally had time for this. Hopefully, I'll get it finished in the next 2 weeks.
Hey everyone! I’ll be coming back to set in stone shortly. I am going to change it up and start uploading every chapter in parts here, but if you follow on AO3 they will be updated as the full chapter.
If you want to catch up or revisit after this short break here is the link:

Organization for Transformative Works
Steve didn’t know how he got here. One moment he was sleeping under a tree with Dustin, settling into his new role, next he’s in the middle of a guarded shopping market in the village. Last time he had been here, Brenner tried to remove his arm from his body over the equivalent of an engagement ring. Now he was being watched at every corner.
After Joyce had woken him up in the garden, he’d carried Dustin and left him with the guards on his way to collect his belongings from his temporary room. He took a carriage ride with Joyce and her children to their home, filled with silence aside from the thumping of the road. The home itself wasn’t big by any means, but spacious enough for this family size. For the night, Steve had to share a room with Joyce’s eldest son, seemingly the silent type. He’d taken the settee, giving the other boy his bed without a word, which led to the awkward morning.
When he’d woken up, it was the man from the garden, snuggling him tightly while he snored in his ear. He was frozen in place, unsure of what to do as with each passing breath, wondering if he should push the man off and risk waking him for an even more awkward encounter. It was going to be awkward regardless of how it was approached, however, it couldn’t have been more horrifying and embarrassing than any other option. Steve jumped at the sound of someone clearing their throat, waking the man behind him. The young man watched as the gardener raised his head, looked over his shoulder at their visitor, looking down at him, and repeated the process once more before sitting up with a stretch.
“You pardon the spontaneous cuddles, my sir. I believed you were Johnny, and if I must say, not a bad cuddler.” He stood, giving Steve a front view of Jonathan and how the gardener wrapped his arms around the young man.
“Ah, thanks dude? Duly noted.” He mumbled, sitting up and avoiding eye contact with either boy.
“Dude?”
“Um, yeah. Like bro, or man… sir.”
“Like a term of endearment. I like it, dude.” He smirked, wrapping himself around Jonathan, the younger boy’s face flushing across his cheeks. The long-haired gardener chuckled, using his shoulder to rest his chin while rocking them. They were the perfect picture of a smitten couple and it made something ache inside Steve, like a rock was taking up most of the space in his chest.
“Yeah… kind of.” A silence fell on them as awkwardness between them from before returned. “So… why are you sneaking around the Byer’s home? You’re the king’s gardener, right?”
“Oh yes! The name is Argyle, but I spend most nights with Johnny. I arrived well into the night, so forgive the cuddles.”
“It’s cool, man, just not used to this arrangement. Joyce said something about setting up my room before returning to the castle.”
“Yes! Today is a day of rest for the workers. We are spending the morning shopping for clothing.”
“That is our plan if you boys can drag yourselves out of bed.” Steve jumps, Joyce having snuck into the room while they had spoken. “Hop is dropping the children off at the castle for their classes and will be back to set up your room. If we wish to return before their classes conclude, then I suspect we should move our feet rather than drag them.”
That’s how Steve found himself thrown into the middle of the market, joined by not only the Byers, but Argyle and a girl named Robin. He’d seen her around the castle, yet hadn’t spoken, though neither seemed to want to reach out. She had already been in the carriage when they had climbed in and seemed to be nominated by Joyce to be his shopping partner and lecturer. She had been rambling, jumping between topics, while she was dragging him from stall to stall. It was a prime example of ADHD if Steve had ever seen one, which was too hard for him to follow, so he spaced out.
He came back to when she snapped her fingers in his face, directing an annoyed glare at him. “I have already repeated myself twice and will not do it again.”
“Well, sorry, I can’t keep track of you.” Steve growled.
“If you would stay alert then you could possibly learn something, Curantis. I assume you cannot reiterate what I just explained to you.”
“And you’d be correct. You lost me on your tangent about what clothes would keep me from sticking out like Bigfoot in the city.” He rolled his eyes, scoffing as he crossed his arms across his chest protectively. This caused the young woman to groan, throwing her head back in frustration.
“You say such outlandish things that make no sense.” Robin turned and marched on, trying to leave Steve with the last word. He followed without hesitation, only for her to whip around without warning. “I was trying to explain the different magic classes to you since you will be in charge of several children that fall into those classes, yet if you continue being an ass, then I will let you learn on your own. Mind you, they are in that age where emotions run high, that being said I hope you enjoy losing your lushes locks.” She scoffed, flicking a strand of Steve’s hair to emphasize the point, before turning on her heels and leading him to another stall.
“Fine, then go on and explain.” He groaned as he followed.
“Gods, you are dense in the head. If you had paid attention the first time, then we would not be in this predicament.”
“Whatever!” Steve growled, the others finally catching up with the two. Joyce had an unpleasant look on her face and gave the classic hands on her hips.
“Robin, what is going on with you?”
“I do not understand why I am tasked with teaching the intruder!” She growled, looking at the woman with a glare. Joyce sighed, looking back at her son, whose attention was on Argyle haggling with a merchant, a small smile on his face.
“Jonathan, would you please take over for Robin and explain things for Curantis?” The young man jumped, nodding with a blush to his cheeks. He switched with Robin, leaving with Steve to give the two women a moment alone. “Come. Let us speak while we stroll.”
The younger woman didn’t say anything, just followed her through the market. She knew a lecture was on Joyce’s tongue and was bracing for it. It didn’t come swiftly, instead they were in a more secluded place when the older woman decided to speak up. “I hold you in high regards. Where Nancy has a logical approach, you have a compassionate one, so you must understand why you are being so cold towards Curantis. I had chosen you for this role, to fold him into our world and get him prepared for the role he was given. I am disappointed in you for this out of nowhere coldness come from?”
True to her word, there was only disappointment in her voice, which seemed successful in pulling a pout from Robin. When Joyce turn to face her, she saw the young girl staring down at her feet while she kicked stones.
“Perhaps we should all think like Nancy from time to time. I am not sorry for being wary of a thief just because he brought another criminal in for justice. The last time we trusted a stranger, he harmed your family. After what happened to the twins and Chrissy, forgive me if I do not wish to see them harmed again.” She scoffed, refusing to look up at the women.
“I understand where you are coming from, truly. I vouched for Martin and he harmed my babies, which is something that I will have to live with for the rest of my days. I need you to understand where I am coming from. He is not Martin, he is just a lost young man. Perhaps you should talk to him before making assumptions.” Robin scoffed, taking the lead to the jewelry stand, Joyce shaking her head as she watched the young woman. Debating whether to try to reason with a girl, but came to a stop when a chill ran down her spine, causing a shiver. She wrapped her cloak while an unsettling feeling befell her. Joyce wanted to hurry this trip along.
The silence that fell over the three boys filled with an awkward silence that seemed to be the normal between Steve and Jonathan while Argyle happily bounced around the stalls. They stood off to the side, avoiding eye contact anyway possible. Steve knew he should say something, or at least apologize for the accidental cuddling with his boyfriend, but couldn’t figure out how to broach the subject. He tossed some ideas around in his head, only to be dragged out by said man clearing his throat.
Steve jumped, whipping his head to face Jonathan. The young man was staring, neither seemingly able to push through the tension to address the other. At least Steve couldn’t. Jonathan seemed to drag enough strength to look at the other. “My mother has told you about some magic, however, to what extent?”
“Not much. I just know that there are different type and that those kids I’m in charge of fall into those classes.”
“I see. Then I shall start with listing the different types of magic schools, followed by those that fall.”
“Ah… sure?” Steve situated himself against a wall, Jonathan closing quarter, but not leaning like the other boy.
“To begin, you have the more common classes, sorcery and druid mages. We have more sorcerers in our ranks than any other. You will be in charge of Dustin and Erica. You will meet fewer diviners and enchanters, which sadly have been dwindling over the years. El and Will are the only diviners I have ever come across in my whole life, and Lucas, Erica’s older brother, is an enchanter. That leaves the final class, a vitamancer, the one and only in the region, being my mother.”
“Why is she the only one? Wouldn’t you or your siblings be healers?”
“The twins fall in their class and my magic is too weak to fall into a class.”
“But we love Johnny all the same.” Argyle appeared, wrapping his arm around Jonathan. A mirror of this morning. The other boy was bright red as the druid tucked a flower into his hair. They joined hands on his hip, the two smiling with eyes only on each other like they were the only two people round.
That was abruptly cut off by a shrill scream that reverberated from a nearby alleyway. Without hesitation, Steve led the charge to find the sight that made his blood boil. Dangling by her arm from an overly tight grip of a man three times her size was one of his kids, Max, if he recalled. He was shaking her violently as he screamed at her face belligerently, while she screamed back, trying to kick him, unable to by the way she was being shaken.
Steve didn’t hesitate, grabbing the nearest the wall, a metal bar to his luck. He stepped into the guy’s line of sight, glaring at the man as he took up a swinging stance. “Hey dumbass! Put her down or I’m going to realign your face into something prettier!” He growled.
“Keep to yourself scrawny. This brat’s brother owed me and I am getting my due one way or another!” He spat in Max’s direction, repulsing the red-head.
“Keep your hands to yourself! I don’t care if her brother owes you even a coin. She’s my responsibility. Let her go now or I will knock what little teeth you have out!”
The men stared each other down, Steve puffing his chest out to try to intimidate the man. “Fine. If you are in charge of her, then you can pay up.” He threw Max to the ground, a sickening crack echoing as the man kept at Steve. He didn’t get a chance when blood spattered across his face and torso. A rough scream echoed in his ears as he was shoved back, finding himself back out on the street.
The world went numb around him, and couldn’t process anything around him, just the blood dripping from his hands. He hadn’t seen this much since the museum, the thieves’ blood covering golem Kas’. His chest was hurting, his breathing quick and shallow, a reminder that death loomed over him recently and he couldn’t fight the panic that poured over him.
The only thing that held him at the moment was hands wrapped around his. It was enough to look up and see Robin, her eyes wide with panic, her mouth moving, yet the words were drowned out by a ringing in his ears. “I-I ca-can’t breathe.” There were hands on him, one gripping his throat. He was thrashing as the corner of his vision was clouding and before he knew it, his sight was gone and his body collapsed.
When he came to, it was to the familiar stone ceiling of the castle, a wet rag on his forehead. Through a sore throat, he let out a groan escape, which was enough to signal those in the room. “Well, well. Back to the land of the living, I see.” Joyce smiled as she peered down at him.
“What happened?” A grumble escaped as he sat up.
“The guards took the assailant down, now locked up in the village. I believe the blood had set you off in a panic. You were squeezing your own neck while gasping for air and passed out. How are you feeling?”
“My throat hurts. Other than that, I’m fine. How’s the kid?”
“Max’s ankle was broken. However, I was able to heal it. Here dear, let me heal your neck.” Steve leaned his head back, a warm light casting against his neck. It was brief, but the pain resided with the glow. “There we are. Now, shall we go join the others for dinner? Journey ahead of us.” She offered out a hand, which the younger took without hesitation. He was still slightly drowsy, so he allowed Joyce to pull him through the castle to a large dining hall already filled with the castle’s occupants.
Dustin was the first to see him and nearly knocked him over when he sprinted from his chair and wrapped his arms around the babysitter. “You are awake!”
Steve couldn’t help the chuckle that left him wrapping an arm around his shoulder. “Now Dustin, Curantis must be hungry. Let us take a seat.” The young boy excitedly pulled the babysitter towards the table.
“Come, you can sit by me and then we can go read more about Knight Alderman.”
“I don’t think I’ll be staying long enough for reading time.” Steve found himself between Dustin and Max, the young girl, looking better than she had earlier. She was picking at the bread on her plate while looking bored at Dustin’s huffing. “But tomorrow, before class, we can read a whole chapter.” Dustin pouted, but turned his attention back to his food.
With his excitement tempered, Steve turned to his dinner just as his plate was filled with unknown meats, cheese, and bread that made his mouth water. One of the blessings of being sent whenever this was, which he was going to miss sorely when he went back to living out of his car. He has no doubt he’s been fired for being MIA, knowing he’s just another number. Part of him hoped Grey would care enough to file a missing person’s report, but then again, the old man was just kind and didn’t owe him anything.
Still, Steve wasn’t going to ignore a hot meal, so he dug in like everyone else. There was hardly chatter, the clatter of silverware on ceramic dishes echoes were filling the room. It was nice being surrounded by people for once in the few years he’d been on his own, though his parents traveled far more than spent time with him in his teen years. It was a warm feeling, and he was gonna hate losing it.
Sadly, it was over way too soon for his liking, and he left with the Byers’, the others making their exit soon after, leaving Kas to corral Dustin and Max to their room. The young girl tucked herself while Eddie tucked in the boy, who seemed a little distant.
“How do you both like your new curantis?”
“I think he is a weakling who faints at the sight of blood. Either way, he was stupidly brave or just stupid to go against that brut.” Max scoffed, staring off to the wall and away from the others.
“I think he is thriving! We have spent quite enough time together. Perhaps you should try it instead of studying him afar!” It is like having a brother whose job is to only spend time with us.”
“I do not need another brother. I have one already!” She snapped, only making Dustin react with another snap.
“Do not be such a prude, Max! I am just telling my truth!” Kas held his hands up at the two, trying to coral them before it got turned into a full-fledged fight. Both were sitting up in bed, glaring at one another, ready to say things that worried the king.
“Your truth is replacing your dead loved ones with anyone that gives you an ounce of attention. I, however, will not be replacing Billy with someone that does not even have a name! It is your fault you do not mourn your mother!” That’s where he drew the line, cutting both children off.
“Enough! Both of you are walking a fine line and someone’s going to get hurt. No one is attempting to replace Billy, but you cannot go tearing someone else down for the way they deal with a loss. Both of you need to apologize to the other because neither is wrong here, but what you both said was.” Neither said anything, laying down with their backs facing one another. Another sigh left the king, but he decided to leave the rest for tomorrow when they all had a night’s sleep.
Leaning over, he blew out the single candle that lit the room, not missing the quivering breathing from both sides of the room, wanting nothing more than to comfort the children. He knew, though, that tomorrow was the best time to broach the subject, only hoping for a better day tomorrow.
Though the day ended less progressive than had been planned when they set out, Joyce had managed to obtain a healthy amount of clothing and blankets that the two were currently putting into the room Hopper had gotten the room put together with the bare minimum. Steve loved having a room back and even if it had just been a pillow and a sheet, taking in the comfort of laying on the bed while Joyce was fitting the clothes into the wardrobe.
“You were rather protective of Max today, jumping in to try to save her.” The older woman spoke up.
“Well, she is my responsibility and I don’t give a damn about what happened between that guy and her brother, but you don’t attack a kid. I would have knocked him out if I hadn’t panicked over the blood. I guess the museum is haunting me, even though I’m on good terms with Kas.”
“Trauma has a way of doing that. I myself am familiar with such. You seemed to be a natural protector when it comes to reactions though, I admire that.” He could hear the smile on her lips, though he couldn’t see her.
“Well, this isn’t my first time babysitting. Between jobs, I would watch the children of my wealthy neighbors that wanted to live out the best years of their lives instead of taking care of their children at home. I made great money that way until my parents kicked me out and outed me to all the neighbors. They all treated me like a heathen for liking both genders. I guess it was fate that I ended up here taking care of the kids.” A chuckle left Steve, ignoring the dip beside him on the bed.
“While you are here, you have no worry of judgment. Some of us become parental over our wards. I had a young man I taught that was like a son to me. He was the only other vitamancer I had met and was quite gifted.” He wanted to ask more, to learn more about this kindhearted woman, yet the look on her face seemed to tell an unhappy ending to this story. Joyce seemed to sense his curiosity and offered a nod to Steve’s suspicions. “You do well with the children. Dustin seems to favor you.”
A smile slid on his lips at the mention of the young boy. “He’s a good kid, just wanting to belong. I get what it’s like to be alone.”
“Hopefully, you will not feel that way with us. I am here as a listener, if you wish to reach out.” With a pat to his shoulder, she stood and made her way towards the door.
“Thank you, Joyce.”
“It is no problem, Curantis.” She said, sliding out the door. His mouth worked before his brain could comprehend whether he’d regret his decision.
“Steve.” She stopped before closing the door, dipping her head back into the room with a wide smile.
“Please get some rest then, Steve. I will wake you in the morning.” With that, she shut the door, leaving Steve to rest.
Snippet that I promised. I’m hoping to get a large chunk done tomorrow so thank you for your patience.
Steve had to share a room for the first night with Joyce’s eldest son, who seemed the silent type. He’d take the settee, giving Steve the bed without a word, making it even more awkward. When he’d been awoken, it was to the gardener, snuggled up against him, snoring in his ear. Steve laid frozen in the sheets, arms wrapped around his waist and a chin on his shoulder. He hadn’t known how long he had laid there, body tense in the other man’s hold, when someone clears their throat behind him.
In no rush, the man raised his head, looking back at whoever was behind them, then back at Steve before repeating. The gardener sat up, stretching, but not hurrying to climb out of the beds. With the force that held him down now gone, the young man was able to see the third occupant of the room, which was Jonathan. “You pardon the spontaneous cuddles my good sir. I believed you were Johnny. If I must say, not a bad cuddler.” He stood, wrapping his arms around the young mage, who looked indifferent.
“Ah thanks dude?” Duly noted.” Steve mumbled, sitting up in the now chilling bed.
“Dude?”
“Um, yeah. Like bro, man…sir?”
“Huh? Like a term of endearment. I like that, dude.”
Good news, I’m off for a week starting today. I’ll post a snippet today for you guys tomorrow as a snippet Saturday. We’re gonna get some traction on these next few chapters. I will hopefully have it out on Monday. After that it may be until next month before the next chapter as I’m going to focus on some small chapter ones for those next works lined up. Keep an eye out for tomorrows snippet.
