Coming up: working on screencaps for the newest Family Guy. Stay tuned...
'FAMILY GUY' CREATOR SETH MacFARLANE GOES TO THE 'DARK SIDE' WITH NEW 'STAR WARS/EMPIRE STRIKES BACK' SPOOF
iF MAGAZINE: Can you talk to us about working on THE CLEVELAND SHOW?
SETH MacFARLANE: It’s going better than we could have ever possibly hoped. It was a real experiment and creatively, at least, it’s really paying off for us. I don’t know whether it’s going to be… It’s always a question whether a show will be a hit or not, but for us, we’ve done what we set out to do.
iF: So what’s it like not being the lead anymore?
MacFARLANE: It’s very relaxing. I love that I know people that like executive producers Mike Henry and Richard Appel who are talented enough that I don’t have to do everything. What’s great about is they’re completely autonomous. My professional policy with the other shows is if I’m putting someone in charge of it, they get the last word. So I will give strong opinions, I will make strong recommendations, but at the end of the day, it’s their ship and they get the final call.
iF: Have they made any, in your opinion, questionable decisions?
MacFARLANE: It’s happened from time to time. Once you get in there and start randomly making judgment from the outside when you’re not there everyday, it’s a slippery slope. I believe that if you give people the power to run their own ships, they will take it more seriously. Aside from the fact that Rich Appel is ten times more experienced than I am, that doesn’t hurt.
iF: What’s the word with the second FAMILY GUY STAR WARS spoof [SOMETHING SOMETHING SOMETHING DARK SIDE]?
MacFARLANE: It will be out for the holidays [December 22].
iF: Is this roughly the same formula as the BLUE HARVEST?
MacFARLANE: It’s longer than the other one. It’s a pretty extensive piece of animation. It almost killed me doing it. It was a lot of work. But I think the fans are going to be happy.
iF: Is it pretty true to EMPIRE STRIKES BACK like BLUE HARVEST was to STAR WARS?
MacFARLANE: We were as faithful as humanly possible.
iF: Who plays some of the new characters that you introduce?
MacFARLANE: The Giant Chicken is Boba Fett. Carl, the convenience store guy, who’s voiced by Jon Benjamin who did Coach MCGuirk on HOME MOVIES, he’s Yoda. Lando [Calrissian] is Mort Goldman, the Jewish guy. We just made him black for the episode.
iF: What about Meg? In BLUE HARVEST, she played the creature in the trash compactor. Is she another cameo character?
MacFARLANE: In EMPIRE, she’s the worm that comes out of the asteroid. And in the third one she’s the sarlaac.
iF: The third one? What’s that one going to be called?
MacFARLANE: That one’s called, WE HAVE A BAD FEELING ABOUT THIS.
