It’s a normal enough day at the Hazbin Hotel. You’re sitting on the couch, relaxing with the sound of the rain as it taps a soothing melody on the stained glass of the door. The parlor is dimmer than usual, the typically bright lighting turned to a gentle glow as the world rests for a moment. A mug warms your hands, and you’re wrapped in a knit blanket that seems to put a deep, calming weight on your very soul.
It’s nice to relax for once. You love the others, really, but too often it feels like the whole building is shaking with the raucousness of their daily hijinks. The slower afternoon with everyone tucked away in their rooms is a welcome change of pace. A feline figure scampers over to you, and you smile as Keekee trills happily, rubbing her fluffy cheek on your hand. Your tail thumps lightly as you scratch her head, sighing contentedly.
Then, you hear a series of loud crashes, and Keekee scurries away. You turn your head to the source of the sound to see Lucifer laying prone on the carpet, having fallen down the stairs. He lets out a muffled groan of pain and you chuckle, watching him lift himself to his feet, brushing himself off with a frown and a light dusting of gold to the cheeks. He lifts his hat from where it fell over his eyes, settling it neatly atop his head. Then, he spots you, jumping in surprise, not having noticed you, it seems.
“WOAH my golly!” he yelps, “Yeesh, don’t sneak up on a guy like that! You coulda given me a heart attack, uhhh,” he squints, pursing his lips, clearly having forgotten your name. “...you.”
You roll your eyes playfully, reminding him your name. He snaps his claws, acting like he remembered all on his own.
“Right! It was right on the uh.. tip of my tongue… sooo…” He looks away awkwardly. “Howzit hangin’?”
You snort, giving a soft, “Good. You?”
He strolls over to your side of the couch, sitting on the opposite end with a hum. “Good, good… just ah.. been up in my room all day.. figured I should.. show some face..” He glances around. “Where is everybody?”
You shrug, taking a sip of your drink. “I dunno, but it’s nice…”
Lucifer hums, nodding. Slowly, he relaxes next to you, letting his back meet the velvet cushion. It’s funny, ever since you arrived in hell, you’ve heard legends of the Morningstar family, mostly of the king. His reputation is that of a powerful, mysterious force with a distaste for sinners and unfathomable power coursing through a holy form. It’s hard to believe the very creature that created hell is sitting next to you, petting Keekee and cooing about what a pretty kitty she is in a baby voice. Your tail swishes leisurely as she leaps into his lap. His red pupils dilate as she stretches, purring, and a soft smile takes over his features.
He’s much different than you’d ever expect of the fabled king of hell, though it was a bit of a relief. At first, the idea of living in the same building as such a figure was incredibly intimidating, but you’re quickly finding that he’s not scary or mean… Prideful, maybe, but he’s far from the steadfast, regal ruler you were expecting. You watch his face, eyes tracing his soft features as he cards his hands through Keekee’s fur, doting on her as she settles in his lap. Your breathing slows, watching the way the soft golden lamps backlight his face, painting the edges of his face with a golden halo fit for an angel.
At first, you think the insistent thumping sound is the rain, until you feel a pull. Looking down, you realize it’s your tail.. and Lucifer’s. Apparently, while you were in la la land, your tail had decided to get tangled in his without your permission. Very cool. You try to give a tug, hoping it’ll separate without a fuss, but based on the yelp Lucifer lets out, it’s not going down without a fight. Lucifer turns back to you, that same golden tint dusting his cheeks as he sees the mess you two are now in.
“Oh.. wow that’s uh..” he examines closer, frowning. “That’s.. ough boy… this is a uh.. doozy, huh?” He laughs awkwardly.
You try to figure out what kind of double square loop whatever knot your tails are in, still trying to pull them apart. You don’t expect it’ll magically work the fifth time but you can’t think of anything better right now.
“Ow-OW can you- agh stop that?” He grabs your hand. “Look, I’ll just.. snap us out!”
He snaps, and with a glittering spiral, your tails weave and twist.. into a bow. You deadpan up at Lucifer. He smiles awkwardly, face flushed.
“...It’s pretty now!”
You sigh. “We might have to get help… Do you think Nifty could help?”
“The little one? I dunno if I’d want her grabbing my tail.”
You shudder. He’s right, of course, but who else could help? Angel Dust could tie a knot in a cherry stem with his tongue.. when you mention that to Lucifer though he just.. stares at you for a second. Husk might be able to help, but you both doubt he’d do it willingly. You barely get one syllable of Alastor’s name out before Lucifer shuts that down.
“Anyone but the bellhop.” He scowls.
“Host.” A crackle sounds behind the couch, and you both jolt as Alastor grins down at the two of you, seemingly having appeared from nothing.
“My, my, what a fine mess you two are in. Whatever were you doing to end up like this?” A laugh track leaves his chest as if it was his own voice.
Lucifer sputters, his face deep gold as he looks up at the radio demon.
“We weren’t– we just– it’s not–”
“Oh, come now, I’m only kidding. Now then.. I believe you two might be in need of… assistance?” Alastor's static-filled voice curls through the air, his smile growing. “I could always do you this.. favor, of course you’d have to repay me somehow..”
Lucifer rolls his eyes. “We’re not making a deal with you, Bambi.”
Alastor’s ears flatten at the name, smile unwavering as always. “Well, then, I’m sure Charlie wouldn’t mind helping you. I’ll go fetch her right away and tell her her pathetic father is tangled on the couch with a guest.”
Lucifer’s eyes turn a bright red, the beginnings of his horns sprouting from his forehead. His voice booms and echoes as he snarls. “Don’t you dare.”
Alastor’s eyes narrow as he holds out a hand, glowing with the arsenic green flame in his palm. His voice grows more distorted as he coaxes, “So do we have a deal then?”
Lucifer looks at the hand, then at you, eyes softening a touch when they land on your face. “No. I can handle it perfectly fine by myself.”
Alastor seems peeved, but puts his hand away. “Fine, fine..” He twirls his cane, melting into the shadows.
Lucifer sticks his tongue out at the now empty space next to the couch before turning to you. He smiles.
“It’s fine, I can fix this!” He waves a hand dismissively.
He pulls you closer, taking your tails into his hands, steady from millenia of creating with them. He sticks his forked tongue out while he works, which is unfairly cute. You watch as he gently pulls and pushes, loop after loop, one by one until eventually, your tails unfurl, freed.
You sigh in relief. “Thank you..*
He makes a sort of scoffing sound, blushing. “Aw it’s-it’s nothing.”
You smile, looking down at the gentle hands that freed you. The same hands that pet Keekee, handed Eve the apple, held Charlie as a baby, brought evil to humanity, and raised the hotel back from dust and debris. You smile, taking them in yours, earning a surprised squeak.
“What are–”
“How are they soft?” you mutter. “your hands are so soft..”
He blushes, gaping at you for a moment before managing a quiet, “I uhh.. I moisturize?”
You chuckle, your tail wrapping around his, beating with your heart, beating with the rain. You run your thumb over his knuckle, smiling. You bring a hand to your lips, kissing it, pulling a choked sound from lucifer, who's practically glowing he's blushing so hard. You can't help the laugh that bubbles from your chest at his dumbfounded expression.
