I was talking abt this with someone abt how Mia likes to read and I know it's probably a detail people have already talked about but I wanted to show the books Mia reads about :)

I didn't read these books but I found summaries of them online.

I. Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes by Chris Crutcher - a book about two outcasts, one of which is a girl (Sarah Byrnes) who has hand & facial scarring from her father's abuse and the other who is her formerly fat friend (Eric Calhoune). The book details the uncovering of Sarah's father's abuse of her and how that affects her and her community.

II. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson - a book about a teen girl named Melinda Sordino who gets raped at a summer party. This experience leads to her becoming socially ostracized by her peers + friends and her becoming mute. She copes with art. The narrative ends with her regaining her (figuratively and physically) voice and using it to tell her story.

So from this, I assume Mia likes to read books of protagonists/narratives that dealt with similar things she's went through and I can't find the panel for the life of me but I remember there was a page where she was speaking in front of her whole school about her H.I.V diagnosis and her story, which I feel like that partially her coming to terms with her diagnosis and finding information + reading about other people's experiences with similar things goes into hand into her developing the courage to do that.

hot take(?) but i don’t totally hate the idea that sometimes kory doesn’t fully understand sarcasm or social clues in general. the real problem is that it’s too overdone to the point that people genuinely believe that’s one of her defining traits and we all know that that’s not true. i think that that’s the biggest problem with her modern writing,like she should definitely know what coffee is. but her misunderstanding a joke every once in a while it’s ok to me,it just needs to be balanced out with more moments that showed her intelligence and abilities and at the moment it’s not. that’s the real problem.
