Update On Chapter 4: Part Deux

I said two weeks ago that I should be done by the end of the week...

And then life and my brain got in the fucking way.

I’m so sorry that I couldn’t commit to the timeline I set out for myself on this chapter, it was very frustrating for me to wake up everyday and say “Today’s the day you’re gonna finish because you said you would” and then have that day end with me not writing a single word.

And then having the week end and the chapter still be incomplete.

And then the same thing happened the next week.

I literally cried last week out of frustration.

But today I woke up with that energy and said I was gonna do it, I was gonna finish today and post tomorrow.

And I fucking did it.

I finished the chapter! IT WILL COME OUT TOMORROW!

Right now it clocks in at 4,450 words but I don’t think I’ll be doing any serious editing this time so it should stay right around there. Sorry if there are any change in tenses, I don’t think it’s super bad if there are though. Being my own beta, I take anywhere from 1-4 hours to check over the chapter for errors or better ways to write certain sentences or sections and it’s honestly exhausting. This time, I’ll just be doing a quick check for possible spelling errors, then putting it out because y’all have waited long enough and I don’t really have it in me for rewrites. 

And I think, from here on out, I won’t be giving myself chapter updating time limits because it’s just stressing me out. No more “Expect the next chapter in two or three weeks!” stuff; I’ll still be giving you chapter updates in terms of how far along I’m coming with it but I will write when it feels right and post within 24 hours of finishing, whenever that may be.

I DO think it’s a good chapter though. It’s soft and still emotional; I worked really hard to get this one done so I hope y’all enjoy it!

Update on Chapter 4.

Me: *swore I’d do my best to not make y’all wait ANOTHER whole month on the next chapter*

Also me: Brain stalls out, a few busy days, had tendinitis flare ups, just couldn’t bring myself to do anything.

Me today: I may write today... *has another tendinitis flare up and still manages to crank out like 50%-60% of the chapter in 3 hours* Excellent, where am I on time since the last update... *checks the date*

MY FUCKING BAD Y’ALL!!! 

IT WILL MOST LIKELY I AM PRAYING AT THIS POINT AND I DON’T PRAY BE DONE BEFORE THE NEXT WEEK IS OVER!! I STOPPED ON A GOOD POINT TODAY AND WHATEVER IS LEFT, I CAN PROBABLY CRANK OUT IN ANOTHER SESSION!!

‘Day After Day’ Etymology Extra No. 3!

THE HASEGAWA TWINS!

This is a copy/paste from the End Note of Chapter 3 with a little extra since I no longer have a character constraint but I wanted to also give it its own post on tumblr since these names are extra special and deserve it. Everything will be under the cut in case you want to surprise yourselves by reading the fic first!

It took me two fucking months and over 30 fucking names to choose the two I felt were absolutely perfect. I *agonized* over these so long because I wanted them to have meaning and I wanted that meaning to be beautiful and I initially was going to name them both after Langa in some way as Reki’s way of remembering him while away— they both were gonna have the kanji 雪 for 'SNOW’ in there as a nod to his ‘S’ name— but it felt a bit lopsided. 

When I finally thought of a good way to name them both, I was satisfied with the reasoning but I was still stumped on the names. I got one pretty quickly after that—like maybe a week after I settled on the reasoning— and then a week after that, I got the other. BUT one (the younger's) didn't feel right. It took another week of waffling before I decided to swap out the kanji I was using to convey the meaning of the younger’s name and another day before I found the name I thought was perfect enough for me to be absolutely content. 

I hope you love them as much as I do.

So, without further ado, we have:

The elder twin, Kousetsu, and his younger brother, Isshou.

Here's my final reasoning as to why I named them the way I did: I wanted them both to be named after the moments Reki and Langa first fell in love with each other.

Kousetsu (降雪) means “Snowfall” and is for when Reki fell in love with Langa— when he saw snowflakes falling in Okinawa during his beef with Shadow. This one pretty much got canonized in an interview with Utsumi and I felt so damn validated, lmao. Kousetsu's nickname is Sekka (雪花) which means "Snowflake" (lit. "Snow Flower").

Isshou (一翔) means “One Soars” and is for when Langa first fell in love with Reki— whether that's when Reki first jumped over him by Cherry's calligraphy shop or when Reki first taught Langa he could fly anywhere once you learn to ollie. Whichever one you like best works because they both fit here.

Isshou also has a double meaning because it's phonetically similar to "Issho" which means "together". Langa and Reki wanted to skate and be together always. They were denied that, but the twins being born together is like a subtle nod as well. And we know they'll be together again. :D

NEGL, I’m lucky AND glad I got out Chapter 2 when I did because life thoroughly beat my ass for the entire rest of May and the first week of June.

I genuinely didn’t mean to take a whole month on a chapter I’d already had 25% finished before I even started posting the fic on AO3 but shit happens.

HEY HEY HEY, HERE’S AN UPDATE!

Ok so y’all, I totally hit a block legit right after I finished Chapter 1. I’m still embarrassed cuz it’s so early in the storyline but chapters that bridge the parts I know I can write quickly for are haaaaard.

Yet I gave myself a two week deadline to get my shit together.

That deadline came and went.

I told myself to write during the weekend.

It did not happen.

BUT I promised that I would write today, even if it was just one paragraph.

So I wrote my opening line for the chapter, went down for a nap, woke up, dealt with some internet issues, then hyped myself up and cranked out the entirety of Chapter 2 in one 3.5 hour sitting.

I do apologize because I’m later than I thought I’d be and it’s way shorter than Chapter 1. It’s sitting at a little over 2.8K and may hit 3K with some edits (EDIT: it did lmao, I just went back at it and it’s currently sitting at 3,004 words) but it’s not gonna be bigger than that. I wish I could’ve written more but I hit the points I wanted to for it so it is what it is.

BUT THIS MEANS Y’ALL WILL GET CHAPTER 2 *TOMORROW* SO THERE’S THAT!

‘Day After Day’ Etymology Extra No. 2!

Ok so I explained in EE No. 1 about how I came up with Koyume (琥夢 “Amber Dream”).

Here’s the reasoning behind the names of the other kids whose names appear in Ch. 1.

1. Asaki (旭輝 “Morning Sun Bright”) 

I originally named her Asahi using the same kanji but I forgot there was already an Asahi in “Free!” lmao. I didn’t want to confuse anyone and luckily, I got to use the exact same kanji which is was most important to me, I just had to switch how the last one was written in romaji to change the name. I chose these kanji because I just wanted something nice and pretty for her to fit her. She was a bright spot of sunshine and joy in her parents’s lives and she became the same for Oka after he took her in and also for Hiromi/Shadow while they were dating. I will most likely write their story later after I’m done this one!

2. Mimika (美海華 “Beauty Ocean Flower”)

I picked Mimika’s three kanji for these reasons: the first ‘Mi’ aka ‘beauty’ is because of course Shadow thinks his daughter is the most beautiful baby on earth. The second ‘Mi’ is the kanji for ‘ocean’ and is actually from Hiromi’s own name 広海 (with 広 aka ‘Hiro’ meaning “Wide/Broad” and 海 aka ‘Mi’ meaning “Ocean/Sea”) which basically means “wide ocean”. I thought it would be cute to pull one from her father’s name. The third kanji for ‘Ka’ is one that means ‘flower’ and I picked that because obviously, Shadow is a florist, but also because what kicked off the ShadOka ship in the first place was that still of Shadow giving Oka a pot of flowers as a gift at the end of Episode 12.

3. Tetsuya (鉄矢 “Iron Arrow”)

I picked Tetsuya as a name mainly because it sounded really good lmao. I’ve always loved the name but I picked these two kanji in particular because I thought of all his parents (his whole pack really) and their iron wills when swimming like arrows through the water and this made me think it was perfect for him. He’s adorable, he looks just like Makoto but with Sousuke’s eyes but he’s totally gonna end up with a personality that’s kind of a cross between Sousuke and Haru, which is gonna be interesting for the Yamazaki pack lmao.

Almost done writing Chapter 1 of “Day After Day”! I already had the end done, I just needed to connect it to what I already had written and I’ve pretty much done that with the 1.6K I wrote last night!

I’m maybe 500-1K away from chapter completion and it’s Tuesday where I am so I expect to be posting it no later than Wednesday afternoon!

Hope y’all enjoy! Chapter 2 will probably take a bit longer to push out because I had most of Chapter 1 done already before I posted the prologue but I’m committed so it’s coming!

Y’all I’m dying, it’s going on two months since I started this fic and I’m still stuck on these two particular names and they will be revealed in two or three chapters and I wanna scream into a pillow at myself.

It’s because they are the most important names in terms of what I’m trying to convey with regards to Reki and Langa’s relationship and I just want to get them RIGHT! *sobs*

I’m giving myself 48 hours to make a decision because I’m hoping to finish Chapter 1 and have it uploaded by Tuesday and I already have part of Chapter 2 done (my brain bounces around a lot so when I get inspiration for a snippet, I zone and come out of it with like 1K or more and it’s not in order lmao, I have 3.6K sitting in my outline doc for one of the end chapters that I’m nowhere near yet ugh).

I’ll do my best, I just want to be satisfied with them and I really hope y’all will like them!

‘Day After Day’ Etymology Extra No. 1!

Y’all do not want to know just how long I spent agonizing over baby names but I’m gonna tell y’all anyway because it is absolutely ridiculous the amount of thought I put into picking the perfect names for these OC S-Pack children.

Of course some of the other names fell right into my lap (in that it took me only like 3-4 hours worth of searching to get some of the other children named and Koyomi took the longest of those) yet the most important ones elude me. I get SO into it looking up the etymology of Japanese names, it’s fucking ridiculous. Yet I love the care that goes into choosing baby names period and I want them to be GOOD, so finding the perfect kanji combination was a challenge I took on happily. 

HOWEVER the twins gave me so much trouble (in that it took me over a day to compile a list of 20 fucking names the exact day I started the outline for this fic, weeks to narrow it down to a whopping 17, and at the time I started actually WRITING the fic in February, I had yet to decide, I legit cried about it). I have spent DAYS on the Hasegawa twins alone and I STILL haven’t locked those down yet and it’s APRIL 16th and now my list has gone to about 30 fucking names. They will be picked by Ch. 2 or 3 I hope because that’s when I SHOULD have their names be said in story but somebody help me please omg.

So here’s your little bonus name trivia for the prologue because the reason I picked what I picked is so important to me):

I originally named Kaoru and Kojiro’s baby girl ‘Koyomi’ after Reki. How?

At first glance, nothing looks similar. That’s why you gotta read the kanji.

The kanji for Reki’s name is ‘暦’ which means ‘calendar’.

暦 can also be read as Koyomi which fits the K theme of Kaoru and Kojiro’s names. It’s cheesy and it’s cute, and Kaoru was not really entertaining it at first but then… so yea.

I originally was looking at OTHER K names because my intention was always to give the Matcha Blossom baby a name that started with a K but then I stumbled upon that and was like “Oh… oh this shit is gooooood.” The bittersweet angst factor could NOT be denied...

...ONLY FOR SK8 TO OFFICIALLY GIVE THE NAME (DIFFERENT KANJI BUT STILL) TO REKI’S OLDEST YOUNGER SISTER AND RUIN ALL OF MY HOURS OF HARD WORK IN A SINGLE DECISIVE BLOW BECAUSE I AM CURSED!!

So I had to pick something else and change the ENTIRE meaning behind it to where she’s no longer named directly after Reki’s name. I was devastated.

BUT, after hours of being stressed about it and more hours of research, I figured out another way to do it.

Reki’s eyes are amber, and amber in Japanese is most commonly read as “kohaku”... but I didn’t want to just use Kohaku, I wanted a little more meaning behind it. So I pulled one of the kanji for amber and looked up some names that use it that start with ‘K’. I narrowed it down to four, said them all out loud attached to both ‘Nanjo’ and ‘Sakurayashiki’ to see how they sounded, polled via my friends, sounded it out AGAIN, then went “Ok this one DOES feel right” and here we go. Sakurayashiki Koyume it is. 

The kanji for Koyume (琥夢) is read as “Amber Dream”.

The day of the two year anniversary of Reki’s disappearance finds Langa on the beach of a seaside town called Iwatobi, wondering what happened to the love of his life.

The day after, Langa finds Reki on that same beach.

But he’s not alone. He’s walking along the shore with one child strapped to his chest and another holding his hand.

And they both have Langa’s eyes.
